typical unreal engine "real time ingame" shader compilation stuttering from time to time, otherwise no problems.
--skip-launcher --vulkan
The launch parameters are for convenience only, the game works fine without those - but the launcher adds no value to the game so it's best to skip it and manually set Vulkan instead of DX11 via launch parameters. The game itself runs perfectly fine, no issues at all.
It worked fine, a single crash in a full playthrough is nothing to complain about.
Sometimes, after a while of playing, the game starts to stutter. By just pressing 'esc', which pauses the game and opens the main menu, and pressing 'esc' again, which closes the menu and brings you back to the game, it's instantly fine again. Happened only in the last third of the game.
A single crash in the middle of the fight against a big sister. Otherwise, no more crashes in 12 hours of play time.
Overall, a satisfying experience.
runs perfect from start to finish
had no trouble with the game at all, everything worked fine.
Very fine game running absolutely flawless
Currently 25 hours into the game, in chapter 4 (out of 6), and I can't say a single bad thing about the game on linux. Runs fine, everything works, one can just enjoy the game right out of the box.
Flawless both on the Deck and also on PC (using Flatpak Steam)
Played the game 75% of the current play time on my PC and the rest on the Deck and everything worked perfectly fine on both systems.
native version works perfect
No Proton required, the official linux native version runs absolutely flawless.

DISABLE Steam Input for this game to make the controller work. (8BitDo Ultimate 2C wireless controller)
Install, make two changes (launch parameter and disable Steam Input): enjoy the game.
While it did start with pretty much any previous Proton version, you were never able to get past the first cutscene, as it would just not play or simply crash the game. Using Hotfix (by Valve, not Proton GE) it now works without crashing and with playing all the cutscenes without any problems. [2024-01-30] I had to keep Steam Input enabled to be able to use my controller (Xbox controller), but as it's enabled by default I just wanted to mention it without giving it too much weight.
absolutely perfect
Runs flawless, and it's one of the greatest games ever. Don't skip this.
Works perfect right out of the box
No problems to report. Installs and plays just fine, controller works, audio is fine, no crashes. Perfect.
Native Linux version works pretty good
Tried an hour of online-matches after CS:GO became CS2, running the native linux version. No problems here - performance is good, no graphical issues, audio is working without any stuttering or crackling, multiplayer is stable and feels fluid and fine. So in short: no problems.
15 hours in the game, no problems at all
After multiple sessions (the first being a 7-hour-session, then a few around 2-3 hours each) I can already report that the games runs and feels like a native title. No issues, performance is really good, controls are tight, audio is amazing. Playing in 2560x1440 on ultra preset (minus the "film-effects" motion blur and chromatic aberration) with an average of 90 fps, peaking at 150.
runs perfect
Absolutely no problems, runs perfectly fine. Online-Connectivity / Multiplayer also works flawless.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
"back" was swapped with R3, "start" was swapped with L3.
It's very much playable
The cutscenes from the story mode don't play at all, it's just a black screen without audio and it seems as if the game won't react, BUT: if you just wait you can play the story mode fights, it's just the cutscenes which are unskippable but don't show. So if the cutscene would be like 45 seconds long you just have to wait this 45 seconds in front of a black screen and then the game will continue.
Pretty low player activity nowadays online, but I played a few ranked matches without any issues.
Local multiplayer with two controllers works without issues.
As most people don't play fighting games for the story (which as described you cannot watch but still play the actual fights) and everything else works flawless it's still in the green and very playable under Linux.
runs perfect
Amazing game, runs perfect without any issues. Currently in episode 5 and everything just works, performance is great, online connectivity works flawless. Great experience.
besides the slightly crackling audio (primarily in the menu, a lot less in the game itself) it runs just fine.
some crackling in the menus, very tiny amounts of crackling while playing.
it just works
Everyone knows that you can always fire up one the many source ports and play the game outside of steam using the .WAD from this game, and there are many very good (linux native) source ports out there, no matter if you want to stay original or a more modern experience with higher quality graphics and mouse look and stuff like this. I for myself am a big fan of Nugget Doom, because you still play the games the way they were designed in the 90s (control- / gameplay-wise) but have a lot of small nice features added.
Yet, when it comes to this official version on Steam, using the Unity-Engine as a wrapper around the classic game, I have to say: it's not half bad. If you don't want to do anything manually and just play the classic DooM-Games, just use the Steam-version. You'll enjoy it!
Doom 1 and 2 are working, Doom 3 BFG Edition has missing graphics (nearly black screen) with only a few shader effects visible.
+set r_fullscreen 1 +set com_skipintrovideos 1
Doesn't work with default Proton 8. At least boots up using GE. The classic DooM and DooM 2 are working without issues, but DooM 3 BFG Edition is not playable, as once the game starts (menu is fine) you are pretty much "walking in the dark", because the level (polygons and textures) won't load / be visible, only a few lighting shader effects are visible.
It runs perfectly fine. Performance is top notch. Just amazing!
Absolutely no bugs, issues, slowdowns, instabilities or anything else. Using regular Proton 8.0-3, playing on the highest graphical settings ("ultra nightmare" preset) in raytracing mode with 120-165 fps. Sound works flawless (had some crackling in DooM 2016, but not in Eternal). I can not stress enough how well this runs. :)
the same as the classic version of DooM (1993) - no problems, just works

Native version runs perfectly fine.
Finished the game itself two times in a row (replaying the game, playing it every now and then since 1993 because it's so good; now playing the Steam-Version for the first time) without any problems. Also, the embedded "Maniac Mansion" works fine, so can enjoy the full package with this (linux-native) version.
Completed a full playthrough without any issues
The game runs really good; it's very well optimized and runs without any issues; everything works right out of the box.
it's an 'early development build', so things change, break, update, get fixed rapidly
generally works okay, currently uses proton experimental by default. performance is not quiet there yet for what it visually renders. would expect constang 165 fps, yet it ranges between 50 and 75, sometimes even dipping into the 30s...
It just works
Not much to report - just install and play. I did a full playthrough and encountered no issues. Really enjoyable experience.
works perfect
I have roughly 350 hours in this game on Windows using the Battle.net-version (played between 2023-06 and 2023-08, didn't touch the game ever since until now) ; just got it on Steam and have to say that there is absolutely zero difference compared to 'windows-native'. Performance is the same, no online connectivity issues, audio is fine - the game runs perfect.
The game runs fine, also no problems with the embedded EA launcher
Controlle being detected but not responding in-game: this is no issue for me as I intended on using keyboard and mouse from the beginning.
I installed the game and played it for 50+ hours over multiple days / sessions and I have no issues to report. The embedded EA launcher made no problems, the game started every time, there were zero stability issues and the performance is as good as you expect for a ten year old game on modern hardware. So as long as you don't need / want to use a controller (which would require tinkering) but are comfortable with using mouse & keyboard, you can just do so without changing anything. Install, play, enjoy.
native version runs perfect
... and I mean it. It runs so well, better than on windows. Saving is faster and after nearly 100 hours without a single - not even the tiniest - issue, I can absolutely recommend playing the native version on linux.
-skipintro
Played it on PS4. Played it on Uplay (PC) when I was still a Windows user. Now playing it again on Steam. And it's as great as ever.
Launch parameter '-skipintro' is just for convenience to skip all those startup clips which feel like an eternity if you have to see them every time you launch the game.
As with every game which launches Uplay via Steam in the background: you have to manually exit Uplay after playing the game to make Steam recognize the game isn't running any more. As a KDE user with a functioning system tray (sorry GNOME users... ;) ) this is easy as the tray icon of Uplay is visible after running the game.
taskset -c 0,2 %command%
WITHOUT the launch parameter, the game has minute-long loading times and "freezes" all the time while browsing menus, because it seems to have threading-related problems on systems with more than two cores. WITH the launch parameter set (limiting the game to two cores) I played for 20+ hours without any major problems, maybe three or four menu-freezes which would unfreeze themselves after 5 seconds or so...
(this report is mainly for God Eater Resurrection, which you cannot review standalone here as it's a part of GE2RB, which has the same engine-problems and can also be fixed with the same launch parameter)
SteamDeck=1 %command%
If you're playing on Linux (but not the SteamDeck) you still have to use the launch command to make it start. Take care: after the first launch with this command the game defaults its settings to the performance level of the Steam Deck, so settings are pretty low even if your gaming pc has enough power for higher settings. So just go to the options and configure the graphics according to your hardware. You only have to do this once; I used the highest settings and had zero issues.
33 hours, zero problems
Everything works perfectly fine right out of the box - install and enjoy.
This game works perfectly fine
Install and play; nothing bad to report, everything just works.
works fine
only 'issue' I found (I wouldn't call this an issue, but it's fair to mention it anyway) is that the images during the loading screens were not shown. Audio played. Everything else "just works".
Runs perfectly fine after fixing the controller bug
You have to manually disable the deadzone of the right analog joystick, otherwise certain movements are not possible. You could also download the community controller mapping 'Xbox Controller with disabled deadzone on right stick', which does exactly that.
Generally fine after fixing the right stick issue; I noticed slightly better performance with Steam Overlay disabled for the game, but you probably can just leave it on, it won't cause any issues.
flawless, stable, no issues
Everything works, no graphical errors, no audio glitches, controller-input is fine, performance is good.
It's listed as "platinum" here for a reason
Runs perfect without any tinkering, using Steam's included Proton 8.0-3, constant 165fps (capped because of display refresh rate), gamepad support, no audio issues.
Despite uplay being used on top of Steam, it runs well.
Only two notes:
- disable Steam Input for the game if you want to use a gamepad
- Uplay keeps running after quitting the game, so you have to close it manually for Steam to recognize that the game has quit.
Native version runs flawless
Install and play, no proton required.
Great game on Linux
Runs without issues, I played the full Game (already in New Game+ cycle) without any issues. It's running super smooth and a very good experience using default Proton from Steam.
Runs well
I had to disable Steam Input for this game to make my 8BitDo-Controller work, but once this was done, there were no more issues at all.
Other than having to disable Steam Input to make my controller work with the game, there are no issues at all. Can recommend.
smooth, stable, very fun
The only issue I had was that some time in game (only!) the "map background square" in the top right moved to the left, but the map markers (red dots for enemies, yellow markers for objectives...) stayed where they are supposed to be, so basically the map became useless. On the other hand, the areas are very small and linear, so the map really is not required at all...
besided the small map-related bug there is nothing bad to say - you can just install and enjoy the game on Linux :)
besides fullscreen not working it's a smooth experience
Finished the full game without any issues (besides the game not being able to run in full screen, which all the other games from the collection do fine), but that's actually not such a big problem, as the playstation graphics wouldn't really look too good if scaled up even more (the window was 1080p, my actual display resolution is 1440p).
as long as you look up the solution to the audio problems it should be fine for most people
To fix the audio issues (no audio in pre-rendered cutscenes, some ingame audio broken / distorted / absent) I had to copy the file "XAudio2_9.dll" (with this exact upper- and lowercase letters in the file name) in the 64 bit version and file version 10.0.17763.1 into the game install folder where the "METAL GEAR SOLID2.exe" is. After that, NO launch parameter is needed, starting the game as usual instantly has all sound working.
I just left this report here before starting my full playthrough, so others might find a simple solution to the audio issues. Will report after playing through if anything else comes up...
after fixing the audio, I played the whole game from start to finish without any issues.

works fine.
Just install and enjoy; somehow, it's a perfect title for the Deck. Runs really good (highest settings) and feels amazing holding the gameplay between your hands. You can play for a longer session without any issues or just sneak in a short side-op if you have limited time. Over the full playtime I had zero technical issues, so I say it's a great experience.
9 hours in, zero problems so far
No tinkering, just installed it using Steam's default provided Proton 8 and everything so far after playing for around 9 hours looks good. No performance- or stability-issues.
70 hours in. Zero issues.
As it's encouraged to add multiple reports for the same game, and my first report being around 9 hours into the game - and now I have ~70 hours of playtime, having finished the base game and already deep into the Sunbreak DLC, I have to confirm my first review: I have yet to experience any kind of issue. Not a single issue, neither in solo- nor in online multiplayer. No crashes, no performance issues, no audio problems, no controller disconnects... I'm impressed how well it works!
Runs perfectly fine on the Deck, you can also pick the highest graphical quality preset (it defaults to low settings at first) and it runs really well.
It's working fine right now
On launch day the game was a mess for me; it constantly crashed, I refunded it. Waitet over two Weeks for the first updates and hotfixes to come in. Tried it again a few days ago and already played around 11 hours completely crash-free and without any issues, including working multiplayer. So for me, it's working without anything bad to report, I can finally enjoy this game. :)
Works really well, no tinkering needed. Just install and play.
Playing on max settings in 1440p with the high res texture pack and Iceborne installed. Everything just works, graphics, audio, controller, multiplayer, stability. No issues to report.
Runs flawless
The game runs fine, also no problems with not playing videos as some other people reported here. Playing with Steam (flatpak) and default Proton 9.0-4 without any tinkering. Performance is good, playing @1440p on the highest quality preset @100% rendering resolution without any upscaling or frame generation between 90-120 fps if "unlocked" (meaning max. 120, the game won't allow more).
The game runs perfect
Played the complete game, ending A to E, without a single issue. Everything works all the time, no performance issues, no crashes, everything smooth.
absolutely no problems using regular steam proton 8.0-3, played it nearly 40 hours, zero crashes or instabilities. flawless.
no matter the platform: just don't use MSAA in this game. It hits hard on the performance. SMAA is the way to go.
The first time launch graphical options are not optimized for the deck, wrong resolution and bad settings in general. Here are all my graphics settings, including the advanced ones. Technically, it's the highest quality settings with disabled AA, since I generally don't like AA in my games.
- V-Sync: 60 Hz
- Field of View: 80 Degrees
- Display Mode: Windowed
- Window Size: 1280x800
- Shadow Settings: High Shadows
- Anisotropic Filter: On
- Ambient Occlusion: On
- Anti-Aliasing: Off
- Bloom: Normal
- Post-Processing: Grain only
- Screen-Space Reflections: On
- Lens Flares: On
- Texture Resolution: High
- Powerup Light Fading: Off
- Distance Light Fading: Off
- Reduced Shaders: Off
- Reduced Shadow Lights: Off
- Light Range: Normal
- Particle Count: Normal
- Robot Explosions: Normal
- Effect Lighting: Normal
The game runs butter smooth, the controls are amazing and it's a blast to play on deck.
first impression: runs super smooth
Installed via Steam, changing nothing (so Proton 9.0-3 is used), and the game runs smooth, stable, maxed out 165 fps (monitor refresh rate) with vsync enabled on highest quality settings @ 1440p without any upscaling. Install, play and enjoy.
runs fine
It's not a very demanding game, it runs well and needs no tinkering. Install, run, enjoy.
native version runs perfect
just install the linux-native version and enjoy this little game. "it just works"
no problems at all
Finished the game without any issues - only thing is you have to manually quit Uplay after exiting the game as it keeps running (icon is visible in the system tray if your desktop environment has one). The game itself runs perfectly fine, nothing bad to report.
works fine but with some slight performance issues
independent from graphics settings, there are some fps slowdowns which seem to be completely unrelated to the stuff which is or which is not going on the screen. Not making in unplayable, but it's noticable when the game "switches" from 165 fps to maybe ~50-60 fps for a second before ramping up to 165 again.
runs perfect
3 hours in, zero problems. Just bought it, installed it, currently in mission 4 of the base game. Performance is great, audio is working flawless, controls are tight and precise.
The game is amazing and runs really well.
14 hours for a full playthrough getting all achievements, so pretty much I'm confident to say that I've seen and visited every part of the game and there were exactly zero issues. It runs so smooth and plays so well, it's just a good experience.
Amazing game runs well on linux
Cutscenes have a strange timing problem where the graphics (audio is fine all the time) stutter and the game runs too slow and then 'it catches up' by accelerating everything for half a second, so it alternates between running too slow and running too fast. Graphics only, audio is fine 100%. Later in the game, in the town of Escalera - and ONLY there - small amounts of microstutter are present in game; as soon as you leave everything runs at full speed without any issues.
It's a lot of fun and besides the mentioned (small) issues there is nothing bad to report.
Since I'm not using Windows anywhere (everything running Linux) I chose to play the native Linux-build instead of forcing the Windows-build and using Proton.
I can not recommend this one enough - I was already amazed by TR 2013 (with Proton) on Deck, but Rise of the Tomb Raider (Linux) topped that with ease. Besides Anti-Aliasing and Motion Blur (I always disable those, I don't like them for various reasons) I pretty much set everything to the highest settings, and the game worked like a charm and looked gorgeous. Sure, here and there you notice the framerate varying, but never to the point of it being a bad experience or hindering you gameplay. Controls, button presses, aiming... everything just was good all the time. In over 21 hours alone on Deck, completing the main game and also a lot of side content, I had literally zero issues. This game definitely shows what native linux gaming can achieve! :) Now, on to replaying Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the Deck... ;)
fun small game which runs out of the box without any problems
No problems on a full playthrough (~ 5 hours), just install and play without any tinkering.
runs fine
after first launch, only a part of the screen was shown. Pressing Alt + Enter once (to go fullscreen) made the menu usable, so changing resolution was no problem after this.
other than the mentioned first launch display bug there was nothing else to report.
official control layout maps the right analog stick as mouse, which does not work good for camera control and especially aiming. Configuring it as joystick is recommended.
Having finished all three "new" Tomb Raider games on Deck, I have to say they all work perfectly fine in general. As mentioned here, the default control layout has a big error - the right stick is treated as mouse instead of joystick. So you won't hit anything when aiming ;) Change it, or use one of the many community provided control layouts that already fixed this, and you're good to go. Besides that point, there is nothing to complain about. You can set really high graphical options, the Deck has enough power to make this game run really good.
Native version is perfectly fine
Played a few longer games on the Linux-native version without any issues. Performance is fine, no crashes, Steam Cloud Saves work as expected, mods from Steam install and work fine, so really no need for manually switching to the windows version and using proton...
Native linux version runs perfectly fine on the Deck, battery life ist amazing, it's stable, no bugs, everything is just great.
Runs fine, no problems to report.
Played from start to finish over a week or so, clocking in 16 hours of game time. Besides a single crash (after completing a level on the subsequent statistics screen, which seemed like a random crash because after reloading the game it worked right away) there were zero issues. I can and do recommend, if you like stealth games.
HOST_LC_ALL=$(echo $LANG) %command%
Technically, it works right out of the box without any issues. If you primarily want to play solo / vs. CPU, just install, play and enjoy.
But if you are not in the US (which seems to be the default location to which servers the game connects if it does not recognize you from another part of the world) and want to play online with people from YOUR actual region, using servers that aren't located on the other side of the globe (which cause nearly unplayable latencies), you have to tell the game where you are. As there is no in-game setting for such a thing (for ranked / quick online matches) you have to set it in the launch command. My variant is not hardcoded to any specific region (which would translate to germany for me) but gets the value of your system's "LANG" envirornmental variable at launch. So just copy & paste the launch command and it should work for you.
native linux version works flawless
no need for proton here, the native version works just fine.
This game runs amazingly well
Perfect! High performance, no issues, everything works, no instabilities.
"it just works"
Install and play; no tinkering required, just use default Proton by Steam. Everything works as intended, no instabilities.
in 7 hours of playing it crashed twice in the moment the game switched from gameplay to cutscene; game just closes, back to steam, you can instantly relaunch it. Progress since last checkpoint / autosave will be lost.
While it runs, it's a smooth experience. If / when it crashes, you lose one to five minutes of progress you made before the crash, but it 'only' happened twice to me in a full playthrough, so no big deal.
works without any issues nowadays
I played through the full main game (included DLC is up next) with absolutely no problems to report. Only thing I did was limiting the framerate to 90 with the in-game setting because this made a huge difference to 'uncapped' for me; my system used around 500W/h when running uncapped (165 fps max. due to V-sync enabled with a FreeSync monitor @1440p on the ultra preset), and the graphics card cooling system always went at full speed, yet at 90 fps it was only around 350 to 400 W/h and the cooling system ran a lot lower and quieter. In around 15 hours I had not a single issue - game runs great, graphics are amazing, audio is superb, full controller support for different types of controllers (with the corresponding button-icons in-game)... very well done.
no problems after switching to borderless windowed mode
In fullscreen (default when running the game for the first time) there were heavy black artifacts covering some parts of the screen. Switching to (borderless) windowed mode fixed those and made the whole game playable without any graphical issues.
The game runs smooth.
Works right out of the box without any issues
Just install and play, nothing bad to report. It just works.
Works the same as it does on Windows
So besides some smaller techical issues in-game, which also appear when running on Windows, the collection works just fine.
Fullscreen doesn't work for me, but windowed mode runs just fine.
instant crash when trying to start fullscreen. windowed mode works flawless.
runs at full speed, campaign and multiplayer work both flawlessly
Sometimes (not every time) when launching the game I get notifications that SELinux blocked something from wine. Nevertheless, the game (including the EA launcher which gets installed with it) works just fine. The multiplayer mode is still amazing.
Re-played it on Deck - what a great showcase game for the device, even if the game is already 11 years old.
What a great game - to this day, still the best from the three of the rebooted series. I played the full game, from a fresh start to the end with a 90% completion rate, so I think I can confidently tell you: crank up the graphical settings to the max! The Deck can handle it really well, the game (still, in 2024) looks gorgeous, it's full of "let me take a screenshot of this" moments!
A quick rundown of the graphical settings: BASIC:
- Resolution: 1280 x 800 (of course)
- V-Sync: Double Buffer
- Fullscreen: On
- exclusive Fullscreen: Off
- Quality: ULTIMATE (set this first before later changing the "advanced" settings to the ones mentioned below)
- Motion Blur: Off
- Screen Effects: On
ADVANCED (starting from the "Ultimate" Quality Level, which gets renamed to CUSTOM once you change anything):
- Anti-Aliasing: OFF
Leave everything else under the advanced settings as they are defined by the previously selected "Ultimate" preset.
The game runs amazingly well, thanks to (only with the ultimate preset) "Tressfx", hair (especially Lara's) looks and animates so great, the textures are crisp, the lighting and shadows are awesome - if I wouldn't know that this game released in 2013, it might very well be a kind of new game by its looks and presentation.
With the settings mentioned above, the game still runs super smooth, and besides two or three seconds (over the full game!) which are entirely only in in-game-enginge-cutscenes, there are no noticable slowdowns. Controls and aiming always are smooth and direct without any latencies.
PS: if you have an OLED Deck and don't care about battery consumption or are plugged in: turn up the OLED brightness to about 90% or 100% while playing. It's so vibrant, it might as well be a native HDR title.
Enjoy! :)
runs flawless
everything works, rock solid, no issues.
WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=4:0,1,2,3 %command%
by disabling Steam Input for the game the controller was fully working; with enabled Steam Input it was detected but did not respond to any inputs / buttons.
You need to limit the game to four cores of your CPU (see launch command), otherwise it won't start. Other than that and the required disabling of Steam Input for the game it works fine.
runs flawless
Besides having to manually enter the UBI-account password each time when starting the game in the launcher, the game works fine and is stable.
no problems at all
switched between my gaming pc and the Steam Deck while playing, it ran well on both systems and I could play from start to finish without any issues.
SteamDeck=1 %command%
Check your graphics settings: after the initial launch with the SteamDeck=1 parameter the game will automatically set all graphics settings to very low values. You can manually set the correct settings and ignore all warnings about VRAM size. Your settings are saved and preserved, so it's a one time setup.
If you have Steam Overlay enabled and try to open it (shift + tab) it will not open and the game itself will freeze and become unresponsive. You can't close the (not opened) Steam Overlay, so you have to kill the game process. SOLUTION: disable Steam Overlay for the game.
After investing five minutes of setup-time to get it fully running and (re-)setting your graphics options, you can enjoy the game without any further issues, solo or co-op.
native version runs perfectly fine
absolutely no reason to use proton, native version works as good if not even better...
