Runs smooth right out of the box. Graphics settings were "Fullscreen", "1280x800", "Shadow Quality: Ultra", "Anti Aliasing: 4x", "Effects Quality: High", "VSync: Disabled". Maybe setting all of them to the max might have worked too, but I was happy with these settings, so I did not even try.
Sometimes, when the mouse-swarm-masses are getting too big, framerate can drop.
On rare occasions the power-shot sound (sounds like the crackling of fire) would not stop to loop, resulting in a constant background noise. Exiting to desktop and starting the game again fixed that problem.
I have over 200 hours of gameplay in AC:Odyssey and it was fun playing with the Steam deck. Surprisingly even the Ubisoft launcher did not cause any troubles with this game.
Ubisoft launcher needs fixing, as usual.
Sometimes the game would not shutdown properly, so had to force-quit it with STEAM+B.
Controllers worked as expected, in-game framerate limit set to 60 FPS, visual quality set to "High".
5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll
Every half-hour or so audio stops working, along with an error-message "AudioSampleProvider buffer overflow." in the console. Often sound starts working again within a minute or so, but often only restarting the game fixes this issue.
FPS got better after switching to "FULLSCREEN" mode.
Sometimes auto-save did not save at checkpoints. After redoing the section, progress was saved.
Runs fine with Proton 5.0-10
Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll
Without MF-fix there were no cutscenes, after applying it worked flawless and all videos worked.
Runs perfectly fine on high graphical settings, V-Sync off, and 4x Anti-Aliasing, and (optionally) locking the framerate to 40 fps. As others have mentioned, the game freezes at certain points in the game for one or two seconds, but then continues without any problems. - maybe the engine loads something in the background.
After choosing "Quit" from the game's menu, the Steam-client still showed the game as running. Stopping it there, really quit the game.
Runs purrfectly out of the box. Resolution was set to "1280x800", window mode was "Fullscreen", quality to "High", and V-Sync was disabled. No problems during the entire play through.
Proton-6.19-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.19-GE-2
Runs like a charm with Proton-6.19-GE-2.
I tried a lot of different Proton-Versions from the 7 and 8 branch, including "experimental".
FPS rate dropped <30, sometimes <10.
While the Void-Engine was running fine on my laptop for other "Arkane Lyon Studios" titles like "Prey", or "Dishonored 2", "Deathloop" was unplayable, no matter what settings I chose in the graphics settings. Even with everything on "Low" and "Performance" the game would rarely go over 40FPS, and after a while drops down to ~10FPS.
Launch Options: "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%"
- had to disable "razer chroma"-settings to fix major performance issue
- alt+tab switching crashes the game
great performance with vulkan enabled
crashes every four to five hours
Only ran with nvidia-455 drivers - I had nvidia-450 installed before and the game did not launch.
Bethesda's Denuvo Anti-Tamper mechanisms kept me from trying different Proton-versions, so I am stuck with 5.13-3, which runs fine, but I would also like to try other Proton versions (like 5.21-GE-1) as there are reports of slightly better performance. When switching versions I got a "Currently your game purchase cannot be re-validated successfully" message.
I haven't used alt+tab or multiplayer mode.
Text is hard to read.
Had to adjust joystick sensitivity to get better movement.

Used steam's default Proton version, and the game ran without any problems.
Runs flawless on Proton-6.21-GE-2 with "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1". I'm >60 hours into the game and no technical problem of any sort so far.

Proton-6.21-GE-2 - Glorious Eggroll
The game ran perfectly fine, until another recent Ubiconnect update prevented the game from starting. Switching to "Proton Experimental" and using the "[bleeding edge]" beta, the launcher now works fine again. so, to sum it up: game runs perfectly fine, launcher needs tinkering
After installing the Ubiconnect launcher via the Steam-desktop, everything ran perfectly fine. Even a few Ubiconnect upgrades were made without any troubles. I was positively surprised given the recent troubles I had with Ubiconnect over the past few years.
After increasing swap-space from the meager 1GB default to 16GB (8GB might also work I guess) the game ran like a charm - no freezing, no rebooting, no resetting of the steam-deck.
Then I also did a little tweaking as described in "https://steamdeckhq.com/game-reviews/god-of-war-2018/#comment-1540".
From that point on, I finished the game without any problems.
Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF
Runs fine with Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF.
After exiting the game from the in-game menu, it does not stop the game entirely (maybe some launcher not being stopped?). So I have to press "B" once more to stop and exit it, then I'm back to my library.
Runs fine with Proton PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1.
Had strange phenomena when I turned on the flashlight, which showed strange shadows, and did not light most of the near objects I directed the light at.
Launch Options: "gamemoderun %command% -onethread"
Frame-limit set to 30FPS.
Framerate drops, stuttering before using GE-Proton and graphics settings
Game crashed after cutscenes or when loading an old saved game.
RAM and swap consumption was massive.
Here's what helped me to get a stable gaming experience.
I noticed a huge increase in RAM usage after cutscenes, when loading the new level. Once RAM was all filled up, swap was used up to its maximum which then caused the steamdeck to freeze or reboot.
Since the default swap-size is 1GB for the steam-deck I created a secondary swap file and added it. With 16GB swap the game was able to load all new content after the cutscenes that previously caused crashes.
I also found these video settings in the game to get a good performance: "Screen Mode: Fullscreen", "V-Sync: Off", "Master Quality: Medium", "Upscale Mode: AMD FSR 2.1", "Upscaler Quality: Ultra Performance". Furthermore I always used DX11 instead of DX12.
This unfortunately reduces the beautiful sceneries in the game to not so beautiful images, but at least with all these tinkerings I was able to avoid crashes, FPS drops, and I could finish the game.
Runs Out-of-the-Box with Proton 5.0-10.
Fullscreen with the already often mentioned Alt+Enter key-combination works fine.
ad-boards have low-res graphics
Had no problems with steam achievements, or other problems that were recently reported. maybe it was fixed with Proton-5.13-1.
Proton-6.12-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Runs fine with Proton-6.12-GE-1, even the videos work.
Works fine with Proton-7.0-2.
Mouse movement was fixed with the "[Control Panel\Mouse]"-entry in user.reg, as mentioned in Tweker's report.
I had to set all graphic settings to low, to get a decent stable framerate.
Set graphic settings to low, and you're good to go.
Runs perfectly fine out of the box.
Only problem was that quitting the game did not close the application. I had to manually kill it via the Steam-client.
Proton-6.12-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.12-GE-1 / Glorious Eggroll
Game crashed everytime a FMV finished playing.
Game would not start with default Proton version.
Runs perfectly out of the box
Game does not provide saving/restoring progress to/from save file.
Without launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1" fullscreen mode would not work for me.
Without launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1" fullscreen mode would not work for me.
Runs fine right out of the box, but - as others also have mentioned there sometimes is a massive drop in framerate. For me it happened everytime I had died, then the framerate would drop down under 10FPS, which made the game unplayable. Going back to the main menu and reloading fixed this issue.
Launch Option: "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 gamemoderun %command%"
Using PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 helped with the initial map loading stuttering, but had huge impact on foliage/tree/branches rendering.
Stutters on initial map load.
Had no problems running the game with all the default settings and Steam's recommended Proton version.
Proton-6.5-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton Glorious Egg Version
Only worked with Proton-6.5-GE-1 for me. On any other Proton version, the game would not even start.
Linux native version did crash often and had a weak performance. Switching to Proton fixed that actually - ran perfectly fine.
gamemoderun %command%
Mouse-Pointer troubles while in windowed mode. No problems in fullscreen mode though.
Works fine with GE-Proton7-16.
Proton-6.19-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Runs perfect with Proton-6.19-GE-2.
The game started only with Proton 4.11-13. Versions that did not work for me: 5.0-10, 5.9-GE-6-ST, 5.11-GE-3-MF, 5.13-6, 5.21-GE-1, 6.3-5.
No premonition-videos were played.
Works fine with Proton 7.0-4 and "+r_swapinterval 2" launch option. Sometimes still shows textures with a slight delay.
%command% +r_swapinterval 2 +image_useCache 1 +fs_cachepath "C:\Cache"
Also cannot finish game as the movie in the lecture room does not show images or play sounds, just displays text - i guess this does not trigger the final opening of the door to get out of the room and continue the game.
bash -c 'exec "${@/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe/TheQuarry.exe}"' -- %command% -force-vulkan
Had texture problems (like in the character's face) until i switched launch option from "-dx12" to "-force-vulkan". This fixed the texture problems.
Proton-5.9-GE-6-ST GloriousEggroll
Launch Options: "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 gamemoderun %command%"
very low FPS rate, ranging from 1 to a max. of 30
Runs fine with GE-Proton7-16.
Ran perfectly fine right out of the box. No tinkering or fiddling with D3DX11 needed, or being forced to use Proton_GE.
The game itself runs smoothly out of the box. As usual, Ubisoft launcher does not work without a fix.
Unfortunately UPlay needs to be fixed as usual. Install a current "Ubisoft Connect" in desktop mode, then replace the files in the "Ubisoft Game Launcher" folder of the game with the one from the "Ubisoft Connect" installation.
Did not notice it is actaully a native Linux game, and I accidentally switched to "Compatibility"-mode right away. Runs perfectly fine right out of the box.
Thanks to the most recent Proton(-GE) release, the UbisoftConnect problem is (currently) gone. Game and launcher now work fine again out of the box.
