Runs perfectly fine on high graphical settings, V-Sync off, and 4x Anti-Aliasing, and (optionally) locking the framerate to 40 fps. As others have mentioned, the game freezes at certain points in the game for one or two seconds, but then continues without any problems. - maybe the engine loads something in the background.

game-performance
Game was free from Amazon Prime. Installed and claimed through Heroic Launcher with GOG. Played with CachyOS' own Wine Staging 9. Only slight stutters for entering new areas, from loading new shaders for the first time. The 'game-performance' command is for the scheduler CachyOS uses.

There are some framedrops here and here and maybe 5 times in the game it freezes for 1-2 seconds
If you use high settings, v-sync off, AA to 4x and lock the framerate to 30fps via quick menu you get an almost stable and nice experience despite the bad optimization of the game

Frame cap 40fps
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 gamemoderun %command%
FPS is a lot lower than expected, but playable. Some stuttering and the occasional permament FPS loss until restart when cinematics are played.
Fixed point crash in chapter 3 approaching rail station until I switched to GE proton
Because I have a new cpu I needed the "OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000" launch option to get past the main menu (thank you person below) and then it played fine until crashes in chapter 3. GE Proton fixed that. All in all, didn't work out of the box for me but it gave me a lot less trouble than other games.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Game is affected by a Unreal Engine 4 OpenSSL SHA bug. Game crashes on Intel 10th gen or later CPU's unless you use a launch option.
Some performance issues, but still playable
Occasional missing textures, and every time I loaded a game or a new level I had to re-apply my anti-aliasing settings.
Major frame-drop in engine-driven cutscenes (to around 24fps) and when entering new areas (game completely locks up for about 3 seconds). Still playable tho
I've played Close to the Sun on Windows and it had some frame-drops even there, though the problem is significantly exaggerated on Linux. DON'T disable E-sync; doing so made performance much worse.
I ran the game with my usual parameters enabling the ACO shader compiler and game mode.
Game uses low resolution textures

The game works great out of the box. In some places there are minor lags and FPS drops at ultra settings.
In some places there are minor lags and FPS drops at ultra settings. Perhaps these are optimization problems of the game itself, and not Proton.
Some stuttering when entering new areas. After a few hours framerate dropped permanently to unplayable levels, fixed by restart.

Played through the Epic Games Store, itself installed through the install script for it.
Game stays on top, impossible to alt-tab.
Rarely freezes in new areas, I assume while shaders compile or something. Only occurs once for whatever it's doing.
Runs as smooth as I'd expect a native game to. Performance seems fine.
Slight stuttering (1-2s) when entering new areas for the first time, probably due to shader compilation. Doesn't affect gameplay.
