There are white squares around the edges of hair that sometimes stretch off into the distance. Subsurface scattering makes the squares bigger. Bloom makes the squares so big they cover the entire head and shoulders. No settings make them go away, but some combos turn them black instead of white.
I have steam set up to bypass the larian launcher and directly launch the dx11 exe. The launcher did work for me, but it was buggy and button text would randomly disappear which I know will be completely intolerable for a lot of people. Putting '--skip-launcher' in your launch options is probably a better way to bypass the launcher than how I do it, but I haven't bothered changing it.
My graphics issues with the hair are probably due to early adopter woes. Steam isn't even correctly identifying the 7900XTX in my system info. These issues were nonexistent with my 2080 super although the game crashed a lot with that card during character creation if I clicked through hair options too quickly.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 gamemoderun %command%
FPS is a lot lower than expected, but playable. Some stuttering and the occasional permament FPS loss until restart when cinematics are played.
Fixed point crash in chapter 3 approaching rail station until I switched to GE proton
Because I have a new cpu I needed the "OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000" launch option to get past the main menu (thank you person below) and then it played fine until crashes in chapter 3. GE Proton fixed that. All in all, didn't work out of the box for me but it gave me a lot less trouble than other games.
gamemoderun PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command% --launcher-skip -skipStartScreen
Random crowd NPCs render at the wrong LOD so their meshes are all blocky. Never happened while playing the GOG version on windows with the same hardware and in-game settings.
I don't use controller, but I leave it plugged in and apparently the game sends vibration commands to the controller even when you're using mouse and keyboard. That would be fine, but whenever the controller vibrates, the game's fps drops to near nothing and the audio is massively distorted for the entire duration of the vibration.
After opening the map a few times, the fps drops to around 3-4 fps while on the map screen and if I keep opening the map, the entire game's fps tanks and it's completely unplayable. Restarting the game fixes this.
Looking around on the internet, this seems to be a problem that arose with the latest patches and is affecting some windows users as well.
Honestly I'm not sure whether the issues above are due to linux/proton or the game itself. Game runs great otherwise.
gamemoderun mangohud %command%
I had the strand hair crash on earlier protons, but no issues with GE-proton 9-20. The current experimental proton also fixed the strand hair crash, but the game hangs on exit so not perfect.
If you're using a ds4 controller, make sure to disable the touchpad in your computer settings to save yourself an annoyance. That's the button to get to the map/character/etc. screens and there's no way to remap that atm.
Demo - Works out of the box
Occasionally, Steam itself crashes when I exit the game which is a minor annoyance.

Slight stuttering without gamemode
It worked perfectly fine without the gamemoderun command, but there was a tiiiny bit of stuttering on the character animations.
Slowdowns can be annoying, but the game saves frequently enough to just exit out and start up again
Saves randomly deleted themselves when playing DLC and I needed to replay the entire game over again. May actually be a problem with the game itself because Windows players also reported this issue
Game randomly slowed to unplayable framerate, needed restart to fix. When played on experimental proton, the game would crash instead of slow down
Very rare on 6.3-8, fairly frequent on newer protons.
Made it through Chapter 1 on experimental proton without issues, but then it was crashing far too often to play. Needs 6.3-8

Shadows were completely borked until I switched to an older Proton. They were extremely grainy on character and NPCs while environmental shadows were overly dark and had bright halo flashes when moving the camera.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" gamemoderun %command%
Updated report~ The issues I had with shadows have been fixed with the latest patch and it runs perfectly. The WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" in my launch commands is for REFramework. You won't need that if you don't use that mod.
Runs great out of the box
Performance is perfect for me at 4k even after using the advanced graphics mod that increases the draw distance of everything. Zero issues
Unsure if this is an early access issue or not, but character will keep running after letting go of the key and will sometimes keep running for up to 6-7 seconds despite no keyboard input. This doesn't happen when using the controller to move.
Runs great out of the box. Have not seen anyone else complain about my issue with character movement so there could be something weird on my end.
gamemoderun %command%
Keyboard controls would "stick" and character would continue running after letting go of keys. Fixed with setting the launch command "gamemoderun %command%"
All in all, the only issue I'm having with the game is due to an early access bug that affects all platforms (glitched ruins level). Otherwise, it's running great.
gamemoderun %command%
It's a signature Valve game so I wasn't expecting any issues and there weren't any. It doesn't even really need 'gamemoderun %command%' I just always set that option by default
gamemoderun %command%
Some cutscene stuttering
Minor stuttering in cutscenes when the camera switches to another view, but for me it's barely noticeable and seemed more heavy in Leon/Helena's story. I did have one crash after 10 hours of playtime, but I suspect that's unrelated to linux/proton as it was shortly after coming back to the game after having it paused with the monitor off to go make dinner.
gamemoderun PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%
Some white flashes and strange shadow artifacts. Most noticeable when waiting in stealth. Flashes might be from snow.
Using any proton causes a hard and repeatable crash at very specific game times
Segmentation faults that prevented game from launching ootb
The Feral launcher for the native version had to be restarted every time I clicked an option because it would freeze. Thankfully it remembered what I clicked, but I had to force stop and restart it 5 times before I could check the box to prevent it from opening and launch the actual game. At which point it immediately crashed due to a segmentation fault.
Switching to proton got it working at a much lower framerate for about an hour before I hit the red light that shines over the first camp area in Siberia. It would consistently crash whenever I got near it.
How I finally got it to work
I chose the beta "linux_vulkan_fix" in the game options
And then, in compatibility I had to manually choose "Steam Linux Runtime"
Boom, segmentation faults stopped and I could play the native version. Thankfully the save files do actually transfer from the proton version if you rename them so I didn't have to replay the mountains. Here's to hoping that was the end of my 5-day nightmare

Controller is only detected with a GE proton
Haven't gotten very far yet, but it's playing great even though my little 2080 is really being pushed to keep up 60fps at 4k. Minor annoyance investigating why the controller wasn't working, but GE proton fixed that.
Another annoyance is the EA launcher. It gets in the way at launch for a few seconds until you click away and it also needs to be forcefully closed after you're done playing. It's really just a nuisance, though, and nothing that actually affects gameplay.
If you want DS4 button prompts, there is a mod on the nexus that is drag and drop and works perfectly. The game is actually supposed to detect which controller you have, but it doesn't seem to be working for anyone on linux so it defaults to xbox prompts.
gamemoderun %command%
Drag and drop mods like Realistic Ammo Stacking and Somewhat Realistic Vehicles also work fine. Although, can't get the State of Decay 2 Mod Manager from the nexus to run so sad day if you're attached to a mod that needs it. I am definitely missing the in-game clock.

Shadows are stretched and flicker until you mess with settings each game session, details below
When alt-tabbing back into the game, you need to hit alt+enter to go back to fullscreen
Out of the box and with recent protons, this game would start but would stay minimized no matter what I did. Switching to 5.0-10 fixed this issue. I see some other people recommend 4.2-9, but that proton crashes my game on launch. You might have to experiment a little.
Regarding wonky shadows, it's a resolution issue, but easily fixed.
Just go to graphic settings in-game, change the resolution to 1920x1080, take a few steps until shadows go back to normal, switch back to whatever resolution you use and voila, fixed for your game session. This was also the case when I played on windows.
Zero issues
Works fine out of the box. Didn't need to choose a specific proton, just hit play. I'm only an hour in so I could run into issues later, but I've already went through several musical sequences without problems.
Using a wired DS4. Needed to check "Playstation Configuration Support" in Steam's General Controller Settings for it to work. Otherwise, launching the game made Steam itself stop recognizing the controller until closing the game and unplugging/replugging the USB cord.
After this, worked perfectly.
Runs perfectly. Minor issue with controller easily fixed
gamemoderun %command%
Mouse jumps to side of screen when trying to drag sliders. Have to wiggle it around a bit before it drags normally
The game is stable and I haven't had any or crashes or serious bugs. The fps is terrible, but that's not a linux-specific issue. It worked fine without ge-proton, but the input responsiveness is better with it.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="amd_ags_x64.dll=b" gamemoderun %command%
Game will prompt you to turn off Steam input which does enable the DS4's LED to change colors according to health, but vibration doesn't work at all.
FPS dips (40+) when looking at reflective surfaces like mirrors even with all reflection settings turned off.
Crash on exit to main menu
I also had the issue mentioned below of the game limiting my vram to 8gb. WINEDLLOVERRIDES="amd_ags_x64.dll=b" fixed that. If you have an AMD gpu, you should check your in-game graphic settings to see if it recognizes all your vram. If you went straight to New Game, you might not even realize anything is wrong.
The FPS dips are the biggest annoyance, but enabling FSR quality helped a lot for me. All in all, I've had worse experiences with new games. Nothing is majorly getting in the way of enjoying the game so far.
Sometimes crashes when exiting the campfire. Very rarely crashes at cutscenes
This game ran fine right out of the box without setting any options. I have used SteamTinkerLaunch to enable Special K so I can mod in DS3 button prompts and it's still not giving me significant issues outside of the occasional crash at fires.
