Works perfectly out of the box
Played the whole game (DX12, Raytracing, Singleplayer)

Some moments where audio was out of sync
Played only single player
Fails to launch

30 fps cap in-game setting.
I can not understand, why valve gave it an unsupported rating. Uncapped performance is 40-60 fps. Premonitions are working, too. I am playing in single payer mode.
We used Steam's Remote Play Together without any issues (this way only one of us had to buy the game)

Capped to 30fps
Works great with no tinkering. Cutscenes and premonitions are all working out of the box.

Игру прошел на минимальных настройках в 30 кадров (лучше железо не тянет), ни каких багов не было.
Works out of the box now without any workarounds needed.
With current Proton and v1.19 of the game, everything works without any workarounds needed. All of the older fixes for Visual C++ Runtime, Audio, Videos and Intel CPU's are no longer relevant.
Finished game without issues
Everything worked out of the box without tinkering, even premonitions.
In my case, every time I tried to start the game, this message was appearing:
"The following component(s) are required to run this program:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime"
To fix this, I installed the Visual C++ 2015-2019 libraries through the Protontricks tool downloaded from the Discover App.
- Open Protontricks
- Select Man of Medan
- Select "Select the default wineprefix"
- Select "Install a Windows DLL or component"
- From the list, select the "vcrun2019" package and click OK.
Even if it will trow some warning, keep going and it should install the libraries.
*I followed this video to change general Steam Deck performance, so your experience could differ from mine: https://youtu.be/od9_a1QQQns
Game = Graphic Quality Preset : Medium, Resolution : 1152 x 720, Cap FPS to 30 : Yes
Steam Deck = Limit TDP : 11, Upscale filter : FSR
Game was on 30 FPS most of the time, but in rare occasions could deeps to 25. QTEs scenes had no problems.
After I saw some new reports here on protondb I tried this game again.
In my case, I had to deal with the C++ runtime error that luckily I was able to fix thanks to the Protontricks app but apart from that, I just had to set Proton Experimental.
I finished an entire playthrough without any issues.
For a stable experience, I suggest enabling the 30 FPS limiter and set the Medium or Low preset in the game options.

Crashes at launch with an error
Unplayable since latest game update. Used Proton 7.0-5 and Experimental.
Game as of v1.19 update no longer needs the video and audio fixes, but instead only needs a MS C++ Runtime install workaround
protontricks 939850 vcrun2019
All of the old issues have been fixed with the new game update. However now you need to install "MS Visual C++ Runtime" for the game to launch.
Example on how to do this using flatpak:
flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak override --user --filesystem=/mnt/MySSD/SteamLibrary com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks --no-bwrap 939850 -f -q vcrun2019
note: replace filesystem path with the path of your own steamlibrary, you may not need this step if using defaults. The vcrun install step sometimes fails for unknown reasons, adding those extra options made the install more reliable.
After the latest game update you need to install vcrun2010 and vcrun2019 in order to run the game
At the moment a manual intervention is required to run the game, as mentioned before you need to install vcrun2010 and vcrun2019. Surely this issue will be fixed in the next proton patch.
Before the last update to play video files correctly you had to run a script, now this fix is no longer necessary, everything works OOTB.
It works out of the box, but if you want to see all content, significant steps are needed to get this 100%. (But it CAN be done.)
I set graphics to "low." It looks fine to me, and you can get close to two hours play on a full battery.
IMPORTANT: See my other report for first steps.
I've fixed the premonition black screen issue. Best guess I have is that the devs patched this already, so I think the script is outdated. It fixes the video, but BREAKS the premonitions. To fix them, (AFTER you've run the script) you'll need to delete (or move) the .MP4s from the premonition folder and rename all the .bak files to .mp4. Folder path:
SteamLibrary>steamapps>common>The Dark Pictures Anthology - Man of Medan>SMG019>Content>Movies>Premonitions
Again, if you don't care about a couple of the cinematics and premonitions, then ignore all this and go for it. It will play fine. If you want to fix them. The fixes are here.
Error where some cinematic cutscenes do not show and instead show color bars. GitHub script to fix the issue works, but the instructions are unclear. Note it does not fix premonitions.
- Navigate to https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
- Click Download Zip on the top right.
- Find the download in your downloads folder and unzip it.
- Unzip the file.
- Open the file "MoM_fix_videos.sh" with a text editor.
- At the top, create a new line and type the following: #!/bin/bash
- Save the file and close it.
- Move the file to the Steam Deck and place it in the root folder for Man of Medan ("/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/The Dark Pictures Anthology - Man of Medan/")
- Right click anywhere inside the folder NOT on a file and choose “Open in Terminal.”
- In Konsole Type the following: chmod +x ./MoM_fix_videos.sh
- Press Return
- Now Type ./MoM_fix_videos.sh
- Press Return
I had to execute MoM_fix_video.sh to have videos playing fine https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
gamemoderun mangohud %command%
Game freezes at first video.
Videos are broken and can be fixed with: https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
Videos are broken, but can be fixed with: https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35 The only Proton version which plays the videos correctly after fixing them is GE-Proton7-36. All other versions i tried either show a black screen or the colofull test screen bars.
Seldom, but some slight "pop" sounds when you switch scenes.
I used PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command% from xoxelliemaexox's report (do note she's on desktop) and used this command through each iteration of Proton. I also used the shell script she linked to, but that didn't seem to change anything. (then again, doesn't look like it has any built in error checking, would just throw a "no work" error if it got caught) That meaning:
- Proton Experimental
- Proton 7.0-4
- Proton 6.3-8
Until I finally arrived at Proton 5.13-6 which is the (as per steam deck) report from user 己ヨ卞回 stated worked fine. (with and without the run script) I haven't seen any issues, but I've only made it to the opening boat scene. Meaning, no issues with QTE's or choice controls so far. My battery life has so far lasted roughly 2 hours and 40-ish minutes before yelling at me, with default settings.
A few versions I tried since I got a crash or the currator video not playing after finishing the into scene
Proton GE 7-30 | Crash/Missing codec 7-29 | Crash/ Missing codec 7-28 | Crash/ Missing codec 7-27 | Crash/ Missing codec
Proton: 3.7-8 | Odd yellow tint/Bad performance - Video plays 3.16-7 | Video plays 4.2-9 | Video plays 4.11-13 | Video plays 5.0-10 | Video plays 5.11-6 | Video plays 6.3-8 | Missing codec screen for a few seconds then video starts to play 🤔 7.0-4 | Crash/Missing codec Experimental as of 09/25 | Crash/Missing codec
5.11-6 seems to be the best version for this game I have yet to do a full playthrough but so far no crashes 🙂
Because of the major bug that happens after you finish the intro scene, you can't finish the game.
I set 40 FPS and graphics preset to medium.
Subtitles are very small. This is a issue that happens also when playing on big screens.
If the wifi is on, the game will become unplayable.
After finished the intro part, the game soft lock into an "screen/texture" error. You will hear some noises but the game will not proceed, making it unplayable.
Tried also Proton GE-7.30 and same bug shows up.
Can confirm, disabling Wifi fixes this AND little hopes performance issues! Can play at all ultra settings once you disable wifi with super smooth FPS. How strange!
I tried everything and nothing made these games run smoothly. Running at 1080p ultra has the same horrible performace as 480p low. Which lead me to believe it wasn't a graphics issue. Someone suggested disabling wifi and, like magic it now runs perfectly at ultra settings. YAY!
disable wifi. game would barely run before but this fixed it completely.
disable wifi
The graphics and story are compelling and playing quality is fantastic on linux with these fixes in place.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
Many people experience video issues that shipped with the game that isn't specific to linux. There is an amazing script with guidance on how to use it at the following link:
https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 fixes this
Overall a great game that just needs some tinkering to get it up and running fully.
Cut Scenes are missing. But crashes preent fun gameplay.
Works good, but videos needs mf.
videos doesn't work, probably 'cause Media Foundation.
I tried with Proton-GE and videos works but for some reason the game crash after load a save game, and even sometimes the buttons doesn't work as it should (you see the "X" button on the game but even pressing it the game doesn't respond).
Proton-GE doesn't work for me, I have to play in normal Proton without little cinematics (just the intro and paintings).

6.12-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
I used Proton 6.12-GE-1.
I used mf-install and fixed the cutscenes as recommended by AwesamLinux.
Please note you need the program xxd to run the script to fix the cutscenes. For this i needed to install the vim package.
Could not get my DS4 working with the game. I tried disabling Steam Input and using ds4drv --hidraw, but it did not work for me.
I followed the instructions of AwesamLinux, and once it was all done, it ran flawlessly. Unfortunately i think that is too much work to do for the average gamer. Also the Quick Time Events are brutal when played with the keyboard (Controller did not work for me).
some videos are not played
When no controller is connected the game ask you to do so

Reaches initial load screen, loads for a second, then crashes on every version of proton I tried.
6.8-GE-1, 6.20-GE-1, Experimental, 6.3-7, 4.11-3, with a fresh prefix each time

The game started only with Proton 4.11-13. Versions that did not work for me: 5.0-10, 5.9-GE-6-ST, 5.11-GE-3-MF, 5.13-6, 5.21-GE-1, 6.3-5.
No premonition-videos were played.
Controller disconnected error but I wasn't using a controller. I couldn't use keyboard.
Failed to detect keyboard. Video files were not playing. For the immersion, this was a deal breaker.
Critical bug.
Black screen after 1st chapter.

With Proton-5.21-GE-1, the game runs perfectly. Reports says that premonitions don't work, but it works perfectly with this version.
5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.21-GE-1
The game crashes for me after about 30 minutes of game play unless i limit the cores with "taskset -c 1-4 %command%" in launch options. I also tried the game with glorious eggroll 5.8 and it does not get past the intro. There is stuttering in the cut scenes. Multiplayer works well. Premonitions are also missing
Stuttering during cutscenes
Occasional crashes when not using taskset -c 1-4 %command%
The game is fixable to be near perfect and with good performance. But requires more work than it should.
Launch option "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%" seems to eliminate stuttering playing the longer extras videos.
Install Media Foundation (mf-install) for all cut-scenes to work.
Some of the videos shipped with the game are broken (on Windows too), you can fix them with this script (see the comments for instructions): https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
Some crackling during videos, to fix that use launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%"
When you switch back to the desktop, mouse movement/clicks are still registered in the game (main reason thumbing this down).
Completed a full play-through, this is a hard call between thumbs up or down.
I decided to give this a thumbs down this time because of all fixes needed to make everything work correctly. Requiring setting Pulse Audio Latency, Esync, installing media foundation and running a script to fix the broken video headers is just too much.
Some of these problems, like the broken videos do exist on Windows too. However there is one remaining minor issue I did not notice before and could not fix on Linux, and that is when Alt+tab switching to desktop the game still reacts to all mouse input.
The actual performance of the game after all these fixes is great on Proton, if you want to play the game on Linux need to avoid it, but be prepared to do all these fixes. Note that the game does not work out of the box on Windows either. (Namco sent a reply to me that they are looking into the video issues)
TLDR; With the current state of the game, set steam launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1%command%"
install Media Foundation (mf-install) and fix the broken videos headers manually or with the script.
The game doesn't work as it should, especially with cinematics and some options that you can't even see them.
As the prev user said, you can fix it with "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%"
The prev user made a script to make the videos loadable in Proton. Thanks to him, it works better (but still it has some crashes)
Videos are skipped unless you install Media Foundation (mf-install) files: colorcnv.dll mf.dll mferror.dll mfplat.dll mfplay.dll mfreadwrite.dll msmpeg2adec.dll msmpeg2vdec.dll sqmapi.dll
Even after doing this some videos in the game will not work, because they are corrupt (have broken headers). The developer/publisher currently has not fixed it (this causes problems on Windows too).
I have uploaded a script that fixes the broken videos, available at: https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
See the comments on that page for instructions.
Minor crackling in videos, can be fixed with "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%"
The game has a random but very rare hang when launching the game, just before reaching the main menu.
The non-working videos are in no way significant/helpful/necessary to the gameplay, all actual cut-scenes are real-time. So in that respect the experience is pretty good for everyone, therefore giving my thumbs up. But if you want to get all the videos working, then that takes more effort than typical gamers would like.

stop rate this game as platinum. premonitions and bonus videos and the after credit teaser don't work. It can't be platinum
