No problems to report. Working well out of the box.
dxvk.conf with 'd3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True'
Without the dxvk.conf framerates are very low. No problems with the file.
Videos are missing audio
Only issue is the audio not playing during videos, which I think is limited to the intro and ending. Otherwise the game is flawless.
Valve's Proton worked similarly, though may not have played the videos at all. I didn't use it long and don't remember for sure.
Sometimes the game CAN work correctly, but it's very unreliable. Restarting the game til it works isn't a great experience.
d3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True
Plays perfectly until I get to the capital city (~5min gameplay), at that point I've had issues like severe screen flickering, solid black screen, or solid white screen.
without "d3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True" in dxvk.conf, game would render outside the game window at around 10-15fps.
Immediate crash to desktop on game launch
The launcher opens, as well as the settings panel. But starting the game itself will immediately crash.
Tried Steam Play's Proton 5.13-4, 5.0-10, and 4.11-13. Also tried Glorious Eggroll's Proton 5.21-GE-1.
All exhibited the same behavior.
XBox gamepad does not work in 5.13 or Experiemental. Works correctly in 5.0.
Following my previous report, I reinstalled my OS from scratch, and switched from MATE on Xorg to GNOME on Wayland. I'm unsure exactly what the fix was, but after that the game worked near-flawlessly out of box.
Works good out of box
The "Story So Far" from the main menu does not play, just drops you back to the menu. I consider this minor. I have encountered no other issues in the 2.5 hours I've played.
The usual dxvk.conf with "d3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True" for Atelier games is needed.
Cannot exit the game without a button mapped to 'Esc'
Entering the in-game control setup requires buttons mapped to 'PgUp' and 'PgDn'
idk if its a bug or some DRM thing, but the game refused to launch without an internet connection. No error message, just infinite loading.
As long as I had an internet connection there was no problem.
The game crashes in out-of-the-box Proton (on launch in 5.13 or after a few lines of dialogue in 5.0), following the instructions provided by /dev/null make the game playable. I noticed no particular issues after that.
Runs very well out of box, only a couple minor issues.
Game does not properly launch in Fullscreen or Borderless Fullscreen. Have to go to graphics settings and fix it each session.
Alt-tabbing out of the game then returning caused some controller glitches. Keyboard prompts shown except when pressing a button, and the right analog stick stopped functioning.
Completed game.
Minor performance issues, but otherwise perfect
Occasional stuttering, and rare 5-10 second freezes. Then it just pick back up like nothing happened.
Possible controller issues, but otherwise all 4 games work great.
Steam Controller worked without issues, but using my Logitech F310 the game would frequently just start reading right on D-Pad for no reason.
I have had the built-in controls stop responding after a suspend/resume cycle. Also if playing with an external controller and the controller disconnects and reconnects, the game will no longer respond to input from either built-in controls or the external controller.
I'm assuming the Deck installs the native version by default, but I'm not sure how to check.
xact_64
Using Proton 6.3-8 with the xact_64 override the game is running flawlessly.
"Launch protontricks with "protontricks --gui", select Death End re;Quest, select standard wineprefix, choose Windows-DLL and scroll down and mark "xact_x64", then click "Ok". Next select "Start winecfg", go to "Libraries" tab and add new override for library "xactengine3_7". Add and apply and close the windows."
Proton 7.0-2 worked without any tweaking, but was unplayable running at single-digit fps.
Crash on launch
Out of box, get some unreadable error about DX11. With PROTON_USE_WINED3D there is no error message, just instant crash. Tried mf-install hoping the crash was cutscene related, but it made no difference.
Same results on Proton versions: Experimental, 5.13-5, 5.0-10, 4.11-13, GE 6.0-1, GE 5.4-3.
Proton-6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.5-GE-2
No sound output other than videos such as the opening.
Very first event scene where the dude's running from a dragon will not advance past the first text and must be skipped. Seems to be fine after that in my very limited test.
Proton-6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.5-GE-2
No audio other than the opening cutscene
Other than the near-total lack of audio:
- First text after starting the game will not advance. Had to skip the scene to continue.
- Occasional freezes during combat. Pretty sure this is related to enemies summoning more enemies, enemies using suicide attacks, or both. No fix other than to close and restart the game.
- After beating the game and saving clear data you should be returned to the opening, then the title screen. For some reason the opening loops endlessly instead. Had to close the game.
Ran perfectly with GE-Proton. Had a bit of stuttering during cutscenes with Valve's Proton, but otherwise was also good.
No video playback.
With default Steam Proton 7 and GE versions based on it I had a lot of graphical glitches, up to and including frozen video output or just a black screen.
Switched to 5.4-GE-3 and everything works great other than a couple videos not playing which is no big deal. Other Proton verions before 7 probably work, 5.4-GE is just my default "old Proton" to use when the new one gives me issues.
For GE Resurrection, since that doesn't have it's own working page. Not great, but playable.
Fixes excessively long load screens (5 min+ without this option) and soft locks on certain menus (character customization, equipment)
Minor to moderate framerate drops in mission areas. Database menus get slower the longer you stay in them, starting with minor hiccups progressing to multiple seconds to switch from one entry to the next.
I'll do another report for GE2 if/when I get around to playing it.
Proton-6.13-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.13-GE-1
Wildly inconsistent FPS in missions. GE2 is usually around 20-30fps, but can dip down to 15 or spike up to 60 on occasion. GER is worse, often running between 5-15fps rarely spiking up to 30fps.
Certain menus have stuttering problems. Database is particularly bad.
"Enjoyable for a typical gamer" might be a stretch. I enjoyed them, but I have a pretty high tolerance for framerate issues.
Proton-6.10-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.10-GE-1
I sometimes get some small framerate dips in combat, but mostly runs smoothly
set -- %command%; "${@//\/launcher.exe//grandia.exe}"
It's been a while, but I think the game just crashed with current Proton, so I used 5.4-GE.
The launch option taken from other reports will skip the game's launcher.
I've never been able to get mf-install to work, and apparently it's necessary for video playback. But honestly I never noticed anything missing.
Game runs well, just be careful with exiting.
The game itself runs fine and I never had any stability problems when playing.
However, when trying to quit, the game would freeze, refuse to close, and lock up my desktop to the point of needing to reboot. To work around this, alt-tab and kill the game via Steam rather than trying to exit normally.
While the intro video worked fine, the ending video did not play.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Works perfectly out of box. The launch option is only needed to support mods.
One of a very small number of games I've run into that don't work with Mangohud or vkBasalt. Not a critical problem by any means.
First launch configuration did not work with gamepad input. Had to use touchscreen.
Most text is blurry and difficult to read, sometimes completely illegible.
After suspend/resume cycle the game did not respond to some or all controller inputs. First time was only the right stick, second time was all input.
The biggest problems are with suspend/resume. An okay experience as long as you exit the game fully before suspending or powering off the device. Though the blurry text may also turn out to be a dealbreaker, I'm just not far into the game yet.
Game does not respond to input from the default gamepad configuration.
After taking time to switch to keyboard layout and set up bindings I was technically able to start the game. But at that point it said it detected a gamepad and switched input methods to the non-functional gamepad. I had no means to get to the options menu and set it back to keyboard, rendering the game unplayable.
Plays mostly fine solo
Fairly significant stuttering when entering a map. Would clear up and play normally after a few seconds.
Didn't try multiplayer
Played for about half an hour with no issues so far.
Apparently ProtonDB isn't detecting that I actually own the game, but I do.
Audio is missing during video playack
With Proton 7.0-2 videos do not play.
With GE-Proton7-20 videos play but lack audio.
Both versions run the game fine aside from that.
Launcher runs, but the game itself either fails to launch or closes immediately after launching.
- Tried every Proton version going back to 4.2.
- All versions both with and without installing dotnet40 via protontricks.
- Tried a dxvk.conf in the install directory with 'd3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True' since that is often needed for Atelier games (from the same dev).
- Tried a couple versions with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1, just trying random things at this point.
Nothing works, best I managed was seeing the Koei Tecmo logo for a half-second before the game closed.
Proton-5.4-GE-3 GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.4-GE-3
See below
- DotNet
- Game will not launch without dotnet 4.0 - use "protontricks 527280 dotnet40"
- Might need to use protontricks --force to get dotnet to install
- Proton Version
- I used Proton-5.4-GE-3. Other Proton versions 5.x and below may work as well.
- Proton version 6.x and later do not work. Dotnet will fail to install even if forced.
- dxvk.conf
- Runs at very low framerates without a dxvk.conf file in the game directory containing "d3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = True"
Crashes on intro cutscene
After starting a new game, the application minimized and a new window popped up with the placeholder video from wine/proton. Then the game crashed.
Will try Proton-GE later.
Proton-5.4-GE-3 GloriousEggroll
Out of the box, game will crash whenever a video is played on any Proton version. Using mf-install will prevent crashes, though the videos still do not play.
Need to use an older version of Proton for mf-install to work. 5.13 and up would not work for me.
The action sections seem to run smoothly, but missing out on large chunks of the story doesn't work for this sort of game. Can't recommend.
No audio during cutscenes
As of Proton 7.0-2 the game still crashes on cutscenes. But with GE Proton the cutscenes now play. Though the cutscenes lack audio, they are subtitled and the game is now playable.
Tried both Steam's Proton 6.3-3 and GloriousEggroll's Proton-6.5-GE-2
X Button (light attack) doesn't work by default. Enable "Generic Gamepad Configuration" in Steam settings fixed it.
- Crashes on the cutscene before the first boss if you don't skip it.
- Crashes using a ranged weapon in the tutorial
- Crashes when interacting with some red campfire looking thing on the beach.
- Crashes whenever I kill an enemy on the beach
- More? I haven't made it beyond this point.
Videos do not play
I gather most of the crashing problems are present on Windows as well, making this not a Proton issue, just a garbage PC port.
Proton-5.4-GE-3 GloriousEggroll
Prevents game crashing at cutscenes, though they still don't play.
Not crashing, but freezing with CPU thread pegged at 100%. I've seen a similar issue with Neptunia games on Windows, so this might be at least partly game issue rather than a Proton issue.
Mainline Steam Proton doesn't work at all. Later GloriousEggroll versions (6.0, 6.1) will run, but have significantly more stability issues.
Videos do not respect language settings and always play in English.
Game would sometimes freeze on launch.
I did try using GE-Proton to fix the video language as other reports suggested. However, I could not get the game to launch at all with GE-Proton7-30 or GE-Proton7-35.
Works fine
Nothing seems obviously broken. Game runs, looks like it should, controller works.
Game runs flawlessly. None of the audio issues that others have reported previously.
Crashes on the first cutscene with new Proton 6.3
Thankfully older 5.x Proton version do still work.
There are some textures and effects missing here and there. But this is very minor - if I hadn't seen streams of the game I would never have noticed a problem.
Some minor framerate issues, nothing gamebreaking.
Runs great so far. Just run it windowed or don't multi-task.
Alt-Tab from fullscreen froze the game and did not release the mouse pointer. Would have to Alt-Tab back to the game, the Alt-F4 to close it.
No such issues running in WIndowed mode.
Proton-6.19-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.19-GE-2
Everything works correctly, there's just this weird inconsistency in button prompts. Using the same gamepad the game has at different times displayed Playstation glyphs, XBox glyphs, or keyboard glyphs.
Proton-6.20-GE-1
Using Logitech F310 or Steam Controller, the game wasn't consistent with button prompts. Most of the time it gave me XBox glyphs as expected, but at times gave me Playstation or keyboard glyphs for some reason.
Game would appear to freeze at the end of animated videos. Was still able to progress using the skip function.
Wanted to check if the White Shadow II cutscene freeze had been fixed in newer Proton versions, found that the game no longer launches.
GOG version, made it to the menu
GOG version, Proton 6.3-4.
- Opening videos played audio only
- On the main menu the menu just spun around constantly. Now that I'm writing this I realize maybe it doesn't like controllers with analog sticks, but I didn't think to unplug it and see if keyboard-only input worked correctly.
- Tried Boxtron as several other people seem to have had success with it, but I can't get it to work for the life of me. The install_gog_game script fails to install. Modifying the script to use files from a preinstalled directory allowed the setup to complete. Launching the game from steam afterward just opens dosbox then closes immediately.
Videos will play, but lack audio.
Game does not launch properly in fullscreen mode. Change to Windowed and it works.
Will not launch in offline mode.
Unfortunate that the game won't launch in offline mode, but otherwise a pretty good experience.
Proton-6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.1-GE-2
Hangs consistently on at least one point in the game
The game runs well in many versions of Proton, but GloriousEggroll's 6.1 version is the only one I can get to play videos. However, this version always hangs after meeting Charlotte for the first time. There may be other problem areas that I haven't gotten to.
You have to be willing to either switch Proton versions temporarily to get past this section, or forsake watching the videos.
Voices during cutscenes are missing, though BGM plays.
GE-Proton is needed to get videos to play, but the gameplay works great in either Proton version.
Limit FPS to 30
Game runs smoothly, no bugs or crashes, full gamepad support, and no issues with suspend/resume.
Proton-6.14-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.14-GE-2
Had a lot of trouble getting my gamepad (Logitech F310) working correctly. Button mappings were all wrong, and the triggers didn't work. Eventually got it to work by switching the controller to DInput instead of XInput, and disabling steam's controller configurator.
Had similar issues in the past with an older version of Proton and XBox controller.
Gamepads can be a pain to get working correctly. Otherwise basically flawless, even the videos play out of the box.
Seems to run great out of the box
I am unsure whether there were any videos that were silently skipped, but the game runs well.
