Native version had issues with font colors. Proton works.
The game likes to jump to another screen when minimizing and I'll have to drag it back.
Videos are missing audio
The game crashes with Proton 7.0-2. Didn't test gameplay itself (probably works considering other reports). I'll give it complete playthrough when audio is working in videos.
Works quite well
Music DLC had some problems. Most of the time they worked (albeit music was more quiet than original), but on some boots they played erroneously. Rebooting the game fixed dlc music.
Videos don't play. There are few, but I was surprised the game didn't play credits.
Some slowdowns, but otherwise playable
In battles against multiple enemies some moves slow the game considerably
On battles against multiple enemies fps drops frequently below 10, especially when using area spells. Also cpu usage is one of the highest of any games I have.
The game is whitelisted by Valve and on default uses (if I remember correctly) Proton 3.16. Performance however is the same with 5.06.
According https://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/avernum/avernum3/support.html performance problems may be present even in Windows and this has something to do with the game using Opengl as renderer. As workaround using optional directx version of the game is recommended. However I experienced that using directX version improves performance, but only improves and doesn't fix problems. The game is still cpu-hog, but fps dips (altough still bad) aren't single digit anymore. As performance is, I don't see myself playing either versions.
The game seems to work fine besides last boss
Last boss crashes
6.8-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Mapping is messed
Last boss also crashes
The crash might have something to do with audio devices. As I understood, the original handheld version of the game used microphone in the last boss and this has been ported to PC version very badly and miss-handles audio devices.
Game works, but weird bug in menu
When playing as Jason weapon menu renders layers in wrong order and background layer draws in front of layer depicting menu.
6.14-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The game has tendency to get stuck to loading screens. Loading animation plays, but loading doesn't seem to progress. Happened 3 times during 2 hours of gameplay. I'd guess the chance is close to 1/5.
With 6.14-GE-2 opening animations play and game is playable
Improvement, but saving still crashes
Game crashes when trying to save
6.3-7 still crashes when trying to save. With older Proton versions the game crashed when opening additional menus... Now you don't need to be constantly aware of pressing wrong controller button to avoid crashing.
Played mostly Crash 2
The game crashes on startup if not launched to primary screen.
Crash 1 crashed once (I think it was due to stack overflow) during my 1 hour of it. Not sure if it is a more common issue or was I just unlucky.
Major time of my gameplay was in Crash 2. Besides problems connecting to servers and loading leaderboards, Crash 2 didn't have problems.
No problems for me
Others report problems with the game minimizing. I use tiling window-manager (Awesome), so I can't vouch safety from those kind of problems.
Tested the latest proton
I've been playing the game for a while with Wine and Proton. Newest version works as good as always.
6.14-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
On first launch the game suffered some slowdowns and then just froze. Overall the performance improved as the game progressed.
Aforementioned crash on initial startup
You can play a couple of hours without issues. The end-game is unplayable.
The game plays at first properly, but after mid-game performance issues arise. After 4 hours or so, fps first dropped around 10 for a while (a minute or so). After that it recovered, but the game started repeating those 10 fps moments more often. Around 6 hours the game was running more in 10 fps than not. Restarting the game doesn't help and if the game was saved during slow moment, the load continues that slow moment.
If the game starts running slowly, change graphic settings and continue playing
Loading a save might cause bad performance, even if the game ran properly when saved.
After playing couple of hours or loading old game, performance drops and game starts running very slow. Performance can however be restored instantly simply by "changing" graphic settings from high to medium or medium to high(!) (even if graphic changes don't happen until the game is restared).
If Esync isn't disabled, the game becomes practically unresponsive. For example it takes 5 to 10 seconds in menu anything to happen after button press.
With Esync disabled the game is runnable. However loading anything new seems to drop frame rates severely. In home base game runs very steady 60fps, but as environment it is very small. In field running little longer distance drops frames to around 40. When multiple enemies are present and teammates start shooting, you can use your fingers to count frames.
Everything works on 6.3-4
6.3-3 had issues with in-game videos and menu backgrounds. For me they just started suddenly working and the most likely reason is proton update.
If not using aco, the audio is very much delayed. Using aco remedies this to some extend.
Can't complete until videos work
End-game video shows Proton's test picture and crashes the game
6.14-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Credits had slowed and crackling audio.
Besides gamepad prompts changing to keyboard prompts, the game works nicely.
The game started on multiple occasions suddenly giving keyboard and mouse instructions/prompt instead of gamepad. Because of the QTE-sequences, the game needed to be then restarted to know what buttons to press.
There was a funny softlock in the first mission when the game didn't render clock-tower to which Raiden crashes. It happened only once though.
The game runs on every boot initially 60 fps and after playing a while it gets lower and lower and at the end I might be playing with less than 20 fps.
MMX4 finally playable, but videos miss audio
MMX4 videos miss audio
MMX1-3 were playable ages ago, but MMX4 crashed because it couldn't play video. Video now plays and MMX4 is probably fully playable. I hope the videos audio get working soon for complete experience.
Had to force Proton 8.0-1 from settings, because the game defaults to 7.0-6 that has problems with X4.
Shader precaching crashes on startup
With the game set full screen, the screen occasionally had grid of darker and lighter areas. With other screen settings, like borderless the grid didn't appear.
I had initially problems getting the game run in my other screen. I had to disable other screen and then in game cycle between full-screen and borderless. For some reason for the couple last starups I've been able to play with my other screen on.
For the last week the game hasn't started with Steam's shader-precaching on.
Online seems to be working nowadays
Videos still don't work.
The game runs only on lowest settings. On lowest settings the game runs 100fps, but it might drop to 15 fps which isn't fixed until other area is loaded or the game restarted.
Game crashes often. Especially Doc's augmentation menu.
Installed fsync-enabled Linux-zen kernel. With vanilla kernel and Esync the game hung twice during one hour session. With Linux-zen and Fsync I didn't experience crash during two hours.
Works with Proton 7.0-1
Not sure if they updated the game. On default the game doesn't show anymore using any Proton version. However it launches and plays fine when forcing Proton 7.0-1.
The game plays properly, but crashes often.
The game crashes every hour and half or so. During 10 hours of gameplay, crashed maybe 7 times. Error says: eventfd: Too many open files. Protocol error: process 00b8: sendmsg: Bad file descriptor
I mentioned in my earlier report how the game was prone to crashing. Using wine3d improves stability greatly. With wine3d I managed to crash the game only once in a timeframe where I'd have expected the game crash 4 or more times. Wine3d however seems to affect window management negatively and every time I enter main menu from the game the window moves to another screen! This didn't happen without wine3d. I use Awesome wm.
The game doesn't obey window manager commands properly. With Awesome wm, telling the game go fullscreen just flickers screen like it tries to do something. The game goes however properly fullscreen when using fullscreen layout. Other commands also flicker screen and I'll might have to issue them multiple times to get proper results. Weirdest thing however is how the game jumps to another screen when entering main menu.
Crashed once
Used protontricks to install dotnet462 and then faudio. Both are needed for game to launch. I ran both commands separately. In my case dotnet installation might not have exited properly, so I'm not 100% sure if using single protontricks would have worked.
protontricks 758330 -q dotnet462 and after that protontricks 758330 -q faudio
Crackling can be fixed by adjusting latency in game's launch options. Just try to find an appropriate value. I use 80.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=80 %command%
The game runs fine but the whole Dotnet is a mess!
Installing dotnet46 with protontricks failed and I had to remove Steam's /steamapps/compatdata/758330 folder and try launching the game to reinstall Proton. After that I tried again with dotnet462 which actually installed. Then however without installing faudio I got gstreamer related segfault error.
Also the game's launcher (the junk that needs Dotnet) doesn't exit and killing it leaves Steam think Shenmue is running. Also launcher has slight graphical issues (atleast with a tiling window manager).
6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
At the tutorial white square popped right corner of the screen, where dialogue box should have been.
The game is very prone to crashing. Crashed 4 times during 30 minutes of play.
Older versions of Proton don't have videos working, which are quite essential component for the gameplay.
In addition to 6.16-GE-1 I tested also 6.3-6 (don't play videos) and 6.14-GE-2 (crashes on startup). I'll probably wait for version or two newer GE-version and test if stability improves.
Crashes every four races or so and no configuration
Lines of squares form someplaces in mode select menu and stages themselves.
Game hang once and crashed once during 75 mins of play.
When launching the game, it gives option to launch configuration menu. Configuration menu however doesn't open, but gives error.
Most of the game runs fine, but you'll need really powerful hardware to get constant framerates everywhere.
6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The proton seems to have problems with larger levels, where more stuff is loaded. Usually fps keeps around 70 or 80, but with some levels it is around 40 or even 25.
Crashes on startup and exits
4.2-9 gives D3D device could not be created error. So I would guess this is the same thing, but without box spawning. Curiously when I last time tried and had Nvidia card, the game launched.
The game is finally playable, but some shaders(?) are still missing
When you start new game you'll see Strider doesn't have face. Also I suspect dark areas are bigger than what they are supposed to be.
Audio probably needs some package installed in system to work
I have two installations of Arch Linux on my computer and audio works on another of them. I suspect that is because the older installation has huge amount of packages and dependencies installed -- including all Wine's and Gstreamer's optional dependencies (plus others). Pulseaudio says the game uses Simple Directmedia Layer stream, but installing sdl package in itself didn't fix audio.
I complained about graphics in earlier report. Checked youtube videos and it seems graphics are just very bad and Strider's face just is a general mess.
Works great
One of the rare games where I never considered installing native version.
Couple of crashes
When completing a chapter and screen fades to white, the game has about 50% possibility of crashing.
Progresses parts through crashing
Seems that the crashes mentioned in earlier report are related to videos that the game plays after bosses. I can't really recommend a game that progresses through crashing, although there are only some crashes.
5.8-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
I didn't test know how other window managers react, but with Gnome Wayland videos have focusing issue. When the game plays video, screen seems to lose focus and turns black. However when the game is refocused by any means, for example turning Steam's overlay on and off by Shift-Tabbing, the video starts playing. After video ends, there is no issues.
6.8-GE-1 crashes when trying to use configuration on launch. Default version doesn't, but with default version videos have to be disabled, because they crash. You can try saving configuration with default version and then playing with GE.
Proton fixes controller mapping issues apparent in native Linux version, but issues present in native Windows version remain.
I suspect the controller is messed also with native Windows version. The game has different layout for exploring and combat. Pressing LT in either, messes the other one.
Load-times from hdd are quite bad for the game to be this small. Probably not Proton's fault, but related to the fact game installed 20 (!) Microsoft component, which bloated the installation.
It seems most of the performance issues was due to game being ran from ntfs-partition. Loading times have dropped in less than one tenth part compared to ntfs. Navigating menus work, but doing anything that involves units takes still closer to a second. Battles work and could be played in theory, but are very jerky and tedious because of the delay. Also movies don't play (missed that from my earlier report).
No problems if your setup is lucky with saves
Saving works very rarely on first try and I'll usually have to try 3 to 6 times. The game is reported having issues with saving on native version, but Proton might aggravate the issue (or else I have very bad luck).
Last time I tested, Outrun and Space Harrier in Sega-arcade didn't have sound. They do now.
6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The game has to be launched through configuration tool and correct resolution chosen. If the game is launched straight, menus flicker. In configuration tool it shows each resolution 4 times for some reason.
With 6.1 videos work, but there seems to be performance issues with videos. When the game plays intro-video, it is very slow and theme song ends halfway the video, because of video being slow.
