Changed left joystick to mouse, right joystick to move keys.
No issues with installation and running. Performs fantastically. Controller setup requires some finagling, but works very well once customised to your liking. Text may be hard to read for visually impaired players.
Works perfectly

I'm lazy/forgetful and always just force Proton Experimental out of habit. I had no issues running the game. Resolutions were a mess, but that's due to the age of the game.
There are some missing buttons that you might need
Seems to work as intended
Works quite well. Note that the game does not seem to be built for massive resolutions (4K) in mind.
Crashes after "screen size" window
On battles against multiple enemies fps drops frequently below 10, especially when using area spells. Also cpu usage is one of the highest of any games I have.
The game is whitelisted by Valve and on default uses (if I remember correctly) Proton 3.16. Performance however is the same with 5.06.
According https://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/avernum/avernum3/support.html performance problems may be present even in Windows and this has something to do with the game using Opengl as renderer. As workaround using optional directx version of the game is recommended. However I experienced that using directX version improves performance, but only improves and doesn't fix problems. The game is still cpu-hog, but fps dips (altough still bad) aren't single digit anymore. As performance is, I don't see myself playing either versions.
Some slowdowns, but otherwise playable
In battles against multiple enemies some moves slow the game considerably

Works great.
