Several of the prerendered animated cutscenes in X4 were not loading properly. This seems hit or miss, and might just be a bug with the game itself.

no audio issues with x4 as reported by others. not running proton tricks or any scripts

Had no problems, working as perfectly on linux.

Use GE-Proton 7-55 with launch options to get audios in videos.
Newer Proton or GE Proton versions have some issues:
- Proton 9: No audio in videos
- GE-Proton 8: The game won't launch, I've tried 8-32, 8-28, 8-22, 8-8, none of them work even though 8-8 works in my Steam Deck. Seems related to what is saved in config.ini according to other's report.
- GE-Proton 9: Tried 11. Can launch the game, but the launch option no longer works, so no audio in videos.

not only do you need to make sure the config file is correct you also need to launch option -w 1280 to force it in 1280x720
-w 1280
-w 1280 is a must along with edting the config file and also disabling steam cloud

Resolution=1280x720 RefreshRate=60 it has to be this also once you save it , turn off steam cloud because the cloud will mess the file up causeing a black screen window to appear
you need to make sure the steam cloud is off and to make sure the config file reflects Resolution=1280x720 RefreshRate=60
steam cloud has to be off after changing the config file back to what it needs to be at or the game wont launch
Black screens because it doesnt know what the refresh rate is and it will say UNKNOWN , change that to 60 and also change the resolution to 1280x720 and make sure steam cloud saving is off for the game or it will black screen hang on the window
steam cloud messes up the games config file
you need to at least turn off steam cloud saving or the game will mess up the second time you launch it

I messed with the config the first time I lanched it but I can't remember the changes
I played most of X1 without any issues, however it started booting an unresponsive black screen after a while and I couldn't fix it no matter how much I tried

GE-Proton7-43 and the Launch options is what got the Game working for me.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Proton 8 didn't have video, 9.0 and experimental (in March 2024) didn't boot. It wouldn't boot at all without launch options, either, no matter the Proton version.
Some videos in the extras don't play.
It just works

Credit to Swish's report for discovering this launch option. By using this launch option and Proton GE (I use 8-8), the audio in cutscenes for X4 will play without the need of using protontricks to install wmp11.
Had to force Proton 8.0-1 from settings, because the game defaults to 7.0-6 that has problems with X4.
wmp11
Protontricks with wmp11 fixes the problem when opening movies, including x4.
Remeber to install VLC from discovery too, otherwise it wouldn't work.
With GE 7-55 and using protontricks to install wmp11, games play great and fmvs play with audio, Day of Sigma included!
Install wmp11 via protontricks
FMV audio missing without protontricks wmp11
without tweaks, games will play, but will have issues with fmvs
I've only played a few hours, but i havent run into any issues yet! Each game launches and runs well.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
You'll just have a black screen if you don't put the command above. Used Proton Experimental, no issues found.
occasionally froze for a few frames (usually at crucial moments, haha), idk if this is because the port is bad or because of proton.
i havent tried x4 yet, am just now starting x3. only reporting what ive seen so far. game is a horrible port of snes and a ps1 game, it uses 2x more energy than it needs to. but its still fully playable
Games work as expected on Experimental, Story can be enjoyed too with crucial FMVs as far as i can tell
Set TDP to 5 instead of 15. Works fine without any notable drawbacks.
FMVs outside of X4 (Day of Sigma and Trailers) do not work at all.
Collection doesn't inherently support the 16:10 ratio of the Deck, can be changed but looks awfully stretched.
A few weeks ago i made a report that the games didn't show any sprites, that has changed since, might change again due to the WIP nature of forced Experimental.
Experimental now causes all games to show up as a black screen, even though intro FMVs work.
Should get fixed eventually, it's been very on and off with Experimental and these Legacy Collections. Base proton works fine for gameplay but the FMVs all lack audio.
Fairly power hungry for a glorified emulator... 15W when playing Megaman X (SNES) is a lot! But it runs fine so far...

Unplayable
The boss faces in the selection screen flicker displaying horizontal lines
After changing to fullscreen and closing the game it gets stuck in a black screen
Slow motion
MMX4 videos have audio with Experimental, WINED3D launch argument gives smoother performance.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Game seems to run slower than intended out of the box. Launching with "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" gives me better and smooth frame rates.
Overall the game works relatively well out of the box. When using Proton Experimental, the animated cutscenes in MMX4 will have proper audio playback. When using Proton 7 instead, the cutscenes will play back but will not have any audio. In both instances however, the game seems to run at a lower speed than it should. As per another post, running with "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" fixed it and makes my game as smooth as butter.
Works great on experimental! X4 FMVs work as far as i know but you will have to forgo the trailers and Day of Sigma. should get better soon!
FMVs for most trailers and Day of Sigma don't work.
Tried the protontricks method mentioned but protontricks kept freezing on me, doing that properly may reap better results.
Each games works well with not many issues. The only problem is Mega Man X4 FMVs have no audio, hampering the experience.
FMVs in Mega Man X 4 lack any audio.
This report was made playing through two stages in Mega Man X and Mega Man X4.
Tried to limit TDP. Didn't help much
It runs ok. But it draws a ridiculous amount of power considering how old and simple these games are. When testing Megaman X it drew a staggering 15-20W. Which is nuts when compared to running the same game on SNES9X emulator where it only draws around 6-7W
MMX4 finally playable, but videos miss audio
MMX4 videos miss audio
MMX1-3 were playable ages ago, but MMX4 crashed because it couldn't play video. Video now plays and MMX4 is probably fully playable. I hope the videos audio get working soon for complete experience.
Works on rare occasions, mostly window just opens & closes again
I've had a few instances of this game successfully launching on my system with Proton 7.0-1 in which case it runs at about 50% its intended speed for some reason.
What usually happens is that the game crashes with the following output:
wine: Unhandled exception 0xc06d007e in thread 10c at address 7B011197 (thread 010c), starting debugger... Unhandled exception: 0xc06d007e in 32-bit code (0x7b011197). =>0 0x7b011197 AccessCheckByTypeAndAuditAlarmW+0x10197() in kernelbase (0x03b2fa 78) 1 0x00b123b6 EntryPoint+0x651e3() in rxc1 (0x03b2fae4) 2 0x00aaccc5 in rxc1 (+0x6accc5) (0x05ca2bb0)
The indicated function call checks whether the process has permission to access a specific resource. So it appears that the game tries to access or change something it doesn't have access to - but only sometimes (or perhaps under certain circumstances).
In any case, it rarely works on my system but even when it works, this version of the game has a long launch time and runs slowly.
I got the same experience as in Windows by doing this: https://gist.github.com/themaxhero/f2a4ddc9067659e77315d6206bf1ab3a

If you had an permission error before, here's the steps I did
Do step one and two only if you've tried to install wmp11 on the current proton version 5.13
If you just installed the game, possibly skip step one and two
- go to protontricks 743890 --gui
- After that go to default prefix and then delete all data and applications inside the prefix
- Switch the current proton version to the previous version 5.0
- Start the game then exit when you're done starting it
- Now do this command: protontricks 743890 -q wmp11
After that, it should download and make the game and cutscenes fully playable

If you've used this command "protontricks 743890 wmp11", apparently it doesn't work anymore than it should. Had errors and sudo didn't help as well as the -q command next to this "protontricks 743890 -q wmp11" (which I forgot to mention for the 2nd X Collection with it's id: 743900)
If you go to this website: https://gist.github.com/BillFleming/9cf58245c5544896181ce99cb108edb5 you can download the files. Get or copy the 0 bytes version of the script and put and install to the game directory.
Everything like Mega Man X4 should work on that alternative, except for the cutscenes.
For a better performance, use WINED3D. Also, for a consistant 60 fps, i put mesa_glthread=true on my amd rx 580. Basically on launch options, put gamemoderun PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 mesa_glthread=true %command%
wmp11 is required for x4 and the other wmv cutscenes to work.
Sometimes, the window might not go into fullscreen, freezing the application. To fix it, go to the directory of the game and select config.ini file and put fullscreen to ON and it works for me after that.
If u played the game on windows and then play it in steam proton on linux, there is a chance your save may be corrupted and must make a new save. The issue is not a problem after making and playing it only on linux.
If Wine D3D is not used, the whole collection seems to be locked to 45FPS for some reason and the games run at 3/4th of normal speed. Ironically, this makes MMX4 run worse unlike the previous three games and it gains a few frames with DXVK, but still doesn't reach 60FPS.
protontricks 743890 wmp11 - required to make MMX4 run at all
MMX1-3 ran at regular speeds, but had occasional framedrop for some reason. MMX4 refused to run at full speed no matter what.
Part of it might be because I'm technically a bit below minimum requirements, but I'm bummed I couldn't get X4 to run at full speed. Tweaking the config.ini didn't really help and I don't know what else to try in Linux.
protontricks 743890 wmp11 makes the game cutscenes and gallery videos fully playable to watch.
I was able to get Mega Man X4 to work by installing WMP 11.

Work very well with PS4 controller
