Crashes while loading into main menu if Experimental is not picked. But works great with Experimental.
Game does not open again if it becomes minimized.
Had to manually overwrite ucrtbase.dll in System32 and delete movies folder. As mentioned in this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamPlay/comments/dysg89/age_of_empires_ii_definitive_edition_now_working/

When using proton 5.0.5 it would immediately crash when starting a Standard Game. Menu and everything worked well though. Needed to revert to 4.11.13
Works perfectly out of the box
Stable 60fps with Medium preset settings, 1080p. Even when pouring liquid; no frame drops at all.
The game crashes when exiting/quitting, need to force kill it.
Very low fps
Very bad framerate, around 15fps, on the first island after starting island.
Works fine
Game crashes and reboots my computer if I turn off vsync. Make sure to keep it enabled.
Proton works better than native. Some issues but works well once it gets going.
Starting a world via the game did not work, had to run the Eco Server via steam and join that.
Sometimes sync issues when playing with friends. Need to reconnect and it is resolved.
Works great straight out of the box
Victory/defeat video not working, but can skip it.
No issues experienced after 35 hours of play
Works pretty well out of the box, but you'll have to settle for significantly lower graphics setting for it to be playable.
On some settings the textures got weird hue shifts at steep viewing angles. Assume it has something to do with gloss shaders or something.
Was very choppy on 1440p, 40-50fps on 1080p. Other settings than resolution does not seem to matter much. Had to mirror displays to be able to change resolution. At least twice as slow compared to Windows with exact same hardware.
Out of the box, no tweaks: Game launches into menu and sound works, but all text is invisible so impossible to play.
Copy data/fonts/Stark.OTF to ~/.local/share/fonts/stark.otf and execute fc-cache: Game launches, texts now visible. Chinese, Korean and Japanese texts just boxes, but other languages works.
Works amazingly out of the box, even multiplayer.
First time starting the game it crashed. Just started it up again and worked perfectly after that. Almost 30 hours playtime at writing, no stability issues since.
Works fine out of the box
When creating new game the startup video is not shown. Maybe video encoding issue. After waiting for it to be over and loaded I could play the game normally without any problems.
Seems to not consistently release focus when Alt+Tabbing from fullscreen.
gamemoderun ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_CUSTOM_MODE=ultra %command% --use-d3d11
Edited config.ini: [General] SkipSplashScreen=true ShowFPS=false
You will get black screen if you do not tinker.
Also you will get black screen after Industrial Action mission. To avoid this; delete the files in the folder: Shipbreaker_Data/StreamingAssets/Video
No fiddling with settings needed, launched straight into game no issues, stable 60fps.
Blocked by anti-cheat. Worked before update.
Works great out of the box
Stuttering at start after loading in, but acceptable after.
Works great out of the box
Videos do not display when loading the game.
Works as expected of the box, no tweaking necessary
Slight random stuttering, not too often. Might just be poorly optimized game and not related to Proton
Works great as long as you turn off some advanced graphical features in the options.
Game does not render, including background in main menu, unless you go into options and turn off a bunch of features.
Fully playable out of the box
When running the 3dMark program; the screen is black with performance counters, both when active on the screen and when standing next to it. This is only a minor issue and does not really affect gameplay at all.
Blackscreen for 30 seconds then crashes
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 gamemoderun %command%
Tried with default proton, experimental, GE. Tried with most launch options suggested below and without any. With experimental and GE it does not even launch into black screen, it just starts up the exe files and hangs in task manager forever without doing anything, waited 15 minutes without anything happening. With default proton, when it starts into black screen, epicwebhelper exe file starts up then it crashes.
Takes a while to start the game and to get into the menu. But runs great after.
Works great. Played with 3 other players without any issues. In game voice and voice detection working as expected.
Works perfectly out of the box
Multiplayer works perfectly. Both hosting and joining.
Were able to join friend via steam invite and play normally no issues.
If I do not switch to experimental; I only get a black screen when starting the game. With it; it works perfectly.
Works well out of the box
I was having framerate problems running it on higher graphics settings, it worked perfect on Lowest setting. My hardware is below minimum system requirements, so I assume this is to be expected.
Works perfectly out of the box
There is some rare glitches with the water and the boat jumping around after it updates, but it is reported on windows installs as well and unlikely to be related to proton. Have yet for it to significantly affect gameplay for me personally.
Plays well out of the box
Crashes to desktop after playing for a 2-3 hours.
Without changing to Experimental you only get a black screen when starting the game.
Everything works great until it randomly freezes up
Randomly freezes up completely after 30-60 minutes. Need to force quit the game.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Crashes to desktop. After only a few seconds with current version. After a minute or two with proton experimental and 7.0
Get DX11 error if I did not include launch options. Will not start at all with 6.x or earlier.
Works well out of the box. Minor bugs but fully playable
Sometimes the ground vertices doesn't line up with each other perfectly when drilling and you can see slight cracks through the map.
Network analyzer doesn't seem to work when joining multiplayer. Atmospherics works though. Not sure if it is related to proton or if it's just the game. Proton 6.3-5 was used.
Works well out of the box
Was getting poor frame rate, especially during excavation. Lowered settings and restarted and it was fine. Might be the game and not related to proton though, not sure.
Game does not start
Settings window opens when starting the game where you can select resolution and windowed mode. No matter what you pick here the game opens with frozen screen like it is showing a screenshot of your desktop before opening it. Changing overlay settings or other versions of Proton makes no difference.
After around 20-30 minutes of playing it freezes entire computer, Alt+F1 does not even work to force close it, only hard shut down with power button to restart computer works.
Have tried with standard Proton, Proton 7, Proton 8, Proton Experimental, GE8. Will not start at all. Only with GE7 will it start.
Works pretty well, but has some rare and minor stability issues.
Get black screen when I Alt+Tab out and back into the game in fullscreen
Only couple buttons worked on the XBox one controller, thumbstick unresponsive.
Exits to desktop randomly. Usually just as you perform some action. Became more stable over time, very rare at the time of writing, so might be the game and not a Proton thing.
Works great. Some issues with fullscreen.
Game crashes when Alt+Tab when in fullscreen. Also crashes with Steam Overlay if people message you while it is loading if it is fullscreen. Works fine in borderless or windowed.
