PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 gamemoderun %command%
For nVidia cards it will only launch with the NVAPI command line. It will crash if you have any input device other than your keyboard and mouse. It will crash if your Graphic settings are not on "Low" in some specific point of few story missions (the very first, for example).
To be fair, I am having a great experience: the Low setting is still impressively good, but I do miss using the Steam Controller.
Sometimes it has some stutter in multi-player but it's perfectly playable.
I played 14 hours so far, and everything works perfectly. I didn't try using the controller since this game is more mouse oriented.
Cutscenes don't work unless you use the mf-install trick or use Proton-GE, but the game is perfectly playable.
To enable the DX12 version of the game go to Properties->Beta and select elexiidx12 but be warned that it will download again more than half of the game.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 WINEESYNC=0 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=2 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_MODE=quality gamemoderun %command%
If you have less than 8GB of VRAM like I have, you will probably have graphical corruptions and slowness.
As reported by other users the DX12 version gives you more FPS but you will have annoying micro-stutter. After trying it on the Deck I noticed there are none so I suspect it's the amount of VRAM: if you have less than 8GB you will encounter them.
The DX11 version, instead, will have less fps but also less stutter.
Lower the texture quality if you have these problems (among other settings).
Game crashes after a minute the room starts
To play the game without graphical glitches one option is to use dg Voodoo2 as reported by other users but an easier option is to use Workshop mods.
To enable them go in the game properties in Steam: Properties/Beta/Select the Workshop beta, then go to the Workshop and subscribe to GD3D11 mod. This is compatible with any other mod so feel free to customise your experience (there are several UI mods to help you playing this old game).
To start the game from now on launch the Mod Lancher, make sure the GD3D11 mod is on top of the list.
Once in the game choose a 32bit resolution in Settings/Video (e.g. 1280x720x32, scroll to the left to find them).
The single player works perfectly but the multiplayer is really buggy and almost unplayable (it desynchs a lot).
Some spike lags in multiplayer, especially in nightmare mode (probably related to the amount of enemies or traps).
Previously I suffered heavy FPS drop spikes but the simply disappeared. I'm not sure what fixed it but it's either the newer Nvidia driver or the Steam Pre-Caching that, recently, seems to do more work. Now I have maximum performance and steady FPS.
Movies cannot be played
With the Multimedia Foundation Library it crashes, without them the game is perfectly playable but cutscenes can't be played. You won't miss much as the majority of the story is in game... except for the final cutscenes.
It worked out of the box and it was also able to download the original file save (from my Windows partition) from the cloud.
Works fantastic!
Very rarely, it crashes on boot. Just restart the game and it will run.
Audio is messed up: sometimes you have music with no voice, sometimes voice with no environmental effects. But with subtitles is perfectly playable. I had to link my save games from the Windows partition.
gamemoderun DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Without the commands the game is a bit laggy in some areas. Playable but not very smooth.
Great game and despite it's made in Unity3D it works really well.
It worked out of the box and on top of this it automatically downloaded for me the saves from the cloud (I am unsure if the game was smart or Steam was).
Except for the Intro movie which is upside down. But at least I can watch it! It doesn't work on my other PC (and never bothered to use Glorious Eggroll).
Single Player works out of the box, minor slows during loading/warps but other than that, great
As reported by user TooBookoo you might need to run protontricks:
- $ protontricks -q --force dotnet40 win7
I have an Nvidia card but I did not suffer form the VRAM bug mentioned by other users, I never experiences crashes and I usually have long play (of at least 1 hour).
gamemoderun %command% --force-vulkan
Without the mentioned commands the game has severe stuttering but with them they disappears entirely.
I used Proton GE 7.1-GE-2 and still using X11. To fix the ERR_GFX_STATE I tweaked the xorg.conf file as reported by LeHoax.
gamemoderun DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_HEAP_DELAY_FREE=1 %command%
I played only docked with mouse and keyboard, but I think the Deck's controls will work with a bit of configuration.
Works perfectly out of the box. Some desynch spikes in multiplayer but noting major
As reported by many users I need to use the following (I have an Nvidia card):
- protontricks 257420 d3dcompiler_47
- add "+gfxapi D3D12 +sfxapi" to the command argument in Steam (and if the games ask about the game driver just ignore it and press "cancel" to launch the game.
As stated: the camera movements causes massive spike lags.
Camera causes massive spike lags when moving it. With the mouse it's impossible to play but with a controller is bearable. It doesn't happen with Classical Gamepad, making the game playable (but you'll be unable to strafe.
Works really well using controllers with tweaks or keyboard only (no mouse)
Massive spikes when moving the camera using the mouse or the gamepad, can be easily fixed by a controller configuration that uses the Arrow Keys to rotate the camera.
I shared a Controller Configuration in Steam for the Steam Controller that binds the arrows keys to the Right Stick, this will fix the camera spikes.
It's playable and I completed the game 100%, but the average player might stop at the first level, where the fps drops constantly below 20.
Several fps drops when the data streams, which is basically everytime. But it's somewhat playable.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 gamemoderun %command%
Without using the OpenGL renderer (PROTON_USE_WINED3D) it's almost unplayable.
It works very good in single player (did not try multiplayer, but if it's buggy as it was on Windows... I don't even want to try). The only problems are some spike fps drops when the HDD reads, mostly when using the portal, it's annoying but nothing major.
Note for Nvidia users with drivers from 535.98: there is a known bug where you can't create prefixes with Proton 8.x. Use Proton 7.x instead, if you have this bug (like I did).
