Menu and Startup works fine. But once in game its unplayable.
As soon as you are in game, FPS drop to 1 and the game becomes unplayable. Can even barely be quit. I tried several Proton Versions, including custom builds like GE.
Works fine out of the box, except for the issue with the not working keys to start a mission. ALT-Tabbing fixes that though and it works.
At mission start, pressing a key wouldn't do anything, unless I ALT+Tabbed out of the game and back in. Not a biggie though, thereafter, it works fine.
If you don't mine the low FPS or have a super powerful machine, then it works. Otherwise, maybe a patch will fix it.
Outside of the menu I get like 8 to 12 fps on lowest settings. I don't think it is a Proton issue though. Many people report low FPS and slow performance on high end machines, even on Windows.
Does not start at all. Starts and crashes right away without any error message.
Starts fine with GE 6 and Proton 6 but hangs on loading the game
The game starts fine, using GE 6.01 or vanilla Proton 6, albeit it takes a bit to start. The main menu shows fine as well but after clicking on new game, the loading screen appears. You can see the circle moving, that indicated, it is indeed loading, and you can press like F1 to get the help up.
However, after like 5 minutes of loading, the circle stops moving, keyboard commands like F1 for help don't work anymore and if you have anything like the F1 menu open, you can't close it. You also cannot call the Steam overlay with CTRL SHIFT and end the game from there. You can however ALT Tab out easily and just click on Stop in Steam to stop the game. No crash here and no reboot or terminal, etc. is needed. There have been 2 updates since I got to play test and none of them fixed the issue. I did not tinker with it, aside from trying different Proton versions. I also tried changing from full screen to window and vice versa without changing anything.
After the intro the game would crash. I found out, the reason for this was the lucon.tff font missing on my system. Installing it, fixed the issue.
Lucon.tff apparently is a Windows font, missing on Linux. At least on all those distros I use and used. Simply downloading it and adding it to the system, made the game work.
Works fine on Proton 3.16 or Proton 3.7. Some fixes are required though.
Sound effects are missing. Installing dsound with protontricks or winetricks fixed the issue.
Game starts in fullscreen on 2nd monitor by default. Upon ALT-Tabbing out and back into the game, it appears correctly on the 1st monitor but appears cut off, probably due to both monitors using different resolutions. Clicking enter to start a game or enter the options works fine and fixes this.
On Proton 4.11 and 4.7 the game crashes a lot when clicking something, pressing ESC or Alt-Tab. I was able to significantly reduce these crashes by using Proton 3.7 or 3.16. This has allowed me to play through the entire tutorial without any crashes.
It was working finally on older Proton Versions without crashes. On Proton 4.11 it wouldn't even start. On 4.7 it crashed a lot. Resolution doesn't seem to match the settings. I could set the resolution in the game to my native one, but it would stay in low resolution anyway. I think like 1024x768. Missing sounds can be fixed by running protontricks dsound. Overall with these changes, I made it work just fine and without crashes.
Works fine, if Proton is set to Windows XP and Mono installed.
Game did not start at all at first. I changed Proton to 3.7 (though I don't think it is necessary). I also changed Proton in winecfg to Windows XP. This triggered installation and download of Mono. Afterwards the game worked just fine.
Not working
No way to get this working. The protontricks command mentioned below or adding the dlloverrides to the launch options as mentioned in the winehq, do not work. The game freezes right after starting on a black screen or just showing the current screen and has to be forced quit.
Before Proton 4.13 skies would be all black and texture were missing with clouds on. This is fixed now and the game works out of the box.
With traffic turned on or on higher settings, performance is terrible on the Manhatten map. However, it is my understanding and experience, that this is not an issue related to Linux but with the game generally being badly optimized. The same is true for several of the other bugs around. On low settings with and without traffic turned on, it is playable with about the same performance as in Windows.
Works fine after creating a modified exe. First you crate a .bat file with a text editor. It should contain: cd Client and in a new line start /wait Empyrion.exe. Then you convert the file into an .exe file. There are online converters around for doing it. Afterwards you name the file EmpyrionLauncher.exe (replacing the old lauchner file). I just renamed the original file to EmpyrionLauncher.old. Now you can run the game through the Steam Library normally. Game works fine and even multiplayer works, as long as you stay on unprotected servers. I also recommend, making a copy of your newly created batch file and place it either in the same directory or in a different, secure place. This way, after an update of the game you can just put it back and don't have to go through the whole process again. Performance of the game is fine on low and medium settings.
Working fine out of the box. No issues at all. Adding a lot of mods slows loading dow. That's not a proton issue though.
The game works fine out of the box. However, on start of the game, there is a black screen for like 5 minutes. No intro video and no way to hit escape. After waiting, the main menu appears and the game can be setup normally. It takes another 10 to 15 minutes of loading before you are actually in game. Once in game, it works fine and with no issues. FPS and performance is great for me.
I would like to point out, that ALT-Tabbing does not work, once you hit play. If done during loading, the game will freeze or will just show a black screen. No way to terminate it, as ALT+F4 won't work not would open any other window. If the game is loaded, ALT+TAB won't crash it but just wouldn't do anything at all. ALT+F4 and leaving the game works fine, once it is loaded correctly with no issues.
During load, the screen and bar are sometimes displaced. Letters in game, for example on the PDA, are difficult to read.
It is for these reason, that I am giving gold and not platinum, even though I am not sure if these issues are due to Steam Play or occur on Windows as well. I am not using a Windows Machine for years. So I cannot compare.
Thanks to the steps mentioned before, the game is working. The Intro Video is not playing and the loading times sometimes seem to be a bit long... ALT-Tabbing, causes the game to freeze and to not respond anymore. However, once it loaded and you are in game, it is working all fine! Thanks for sharing your findings!
Game did not start up at all. Following the steps indicated here, the game did start but the screen / window would flicker and keep resizing itself while remaining black at all times. Trying to change Proton version or the OS (to Windows XP) did not fix it. Finally, I went to the .ini config file and turned on the option zStartupWindowed=1. This enables windowed mode. I set the resolution to 1024 * 768 which seems to work fine, as well as 800 * 600. Of course it is not the perfect solution after all but at least the game works fine. Performance is also good!
Performance could at times be a bit better. Also once in a while the game tends to crash. But I remember it from crashing on Windows every now and then as well. Hence gold.
Works fine out of the box. There are some mouse issues after ALT-TAB and once in a while it appears that the mouse cursor does stop working at all. This can be fixed by ALT-TAB but may result in the aforementioned mouse bug... however, it at least allows saving the game.
This one worked fine and out of the box. Nothing had to be done or settings to be changed! Cool!!!!
The game works also with default Steam Proton Experimental, but the videos are broken…, however, that's only a minor thing.
Not working. Starts and crashes right away, without even opening. Installing dotnet did not do the trick.
Works fine out of the box. First there have been some missing doors, etc. but updating to the latest drivers has fixed the issue.
Alt-Tabbing in and out of the game does not work. Other than that, everything is working fine.
Playable on a high-end machine, but it has issues, unrelated to Proton. I recommend wait for a bit before buying, while devs patch.
Sometimes ALT Tabbing out of the game will cause it to crash or hang.
Game performance is horrible, even on lowest settings. However, this is also an issue with the vanilla game and performance is being optimized still. As of now, for me, it averaged between 7 and 15 fps on lowest settings. However, I do not have the best hardware, but other games do run significantly better.
There are still some occasional crashes and issues with the game like exceptions, that don't crash the game, but spam the console and prevent you from doing anything in the game. Those issues are, however, not related to Proton or Linux but are issues that are on Windows as well.
Doesn't run. Installs fine but crashes as soon as it is started...
Intro Video is broken. Main Menu works fine. Black screen and unclickable buttons after loading a scenario or campaign. Can be fixed by ALT-Tabbing. Then no issue and the game works perfectly fine.
Aside from the error box about missing language files, when starting the launcher, it works just fine.
It's an old game with mediocre graphics and performance, but it works fine.
The game has issues and bugs, that never got patched. They are not related to Linux or Proton, but they can cause issues. If you don't mind that, it is a game, that is ok for its time.
Game installs fine, both native and using proton. However, native game does not start up. Proton version only shows black windows.
Runs fine out of the box. I could even install GWX (through regular Wine) and there are no issues at all!
Borked. Starts out of the box but asks for an update of .NET which is apparently outdated. Following the steps outlined here, to install dotnet472 and xact will work, but then the game won't start at all. It would just say "running" in Steam. Downloading the hotfix or a new .NET version from Microsoft, does install without error as well and the game starts fine. However, the message to update .NET still appears. As such the game is not playable. Too bad, as I wanted to play this for months... if anyone has a fix for this, please feel free to share! I would love to get SE to work!
Runs fine out of the box, but you have to use the Windows version (Right-Click > Properties > Force use of Steam Compatibility Tool (the last option on the first page). This is necessary, since the Linux client does start but crashes afterwards and is not working at all. According to the devs, the Linux client is not finished and not intended to work for now.
Not working...
It starts up fine but after the splash screen it just crashes back to the desktop. I have managed to get it to work once, then it crashed again and I could not get it to work again. No error message. I have tried tinkering with the DosBox config file but it did not work either... Too bad.
Unlike 25th Anniversary, this one works right out of the box with no issues at all.
Works fine, but freezes once opening the settings, trying to access any consoles or look around on the bridge. So far, I have been unable to find a solution for these issues. While the game is playable, it becomes quite frustrating and difficult, for example if you want to change warp speed or fly to a location which is not the current mission objective.
Error on Start up
I remember this working like a year ago or so. However, now it won't work at all. There is an error message coming up upon starting the game. The here mentioned fix to change the file paths in the .ini file or copying the respective files into the home directory, is not working.
Does not run
The launcher starts but after that it crashes with an error message and freezes. Needs to be forcibly quit to leave the game.
Runs perfecrtly fine out of the box. Nothing to do, nothing to change. Excellent. This makes the whole TES series working with Steam Play on Linux! Yay
Works fine out of the box. No tweaks or changes necessary.
I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora a while ago. While on Ubuntu the game worked fine, on Fedora it would freeze once in a while during start up or when loading into the character screen.
The issue seems to be related to the file size limit, as another user stated. I have never had that issues on Ubuntu, so I did not check. However, on Fedora the file limit seems to be set to 1024 by default. You should be able to check the file limit by using the command $ ulimit -n.
You should be able to change this by using sudo ulimit 4096
The minimum amount should be 4096, though higher numbers might be required. The above command seems to be working only until reboot and might not work on some systems. In this case, you can use the following permanent solution:
sudo nano /etc/systemd/user.conf
Look for the following line, which is commented out by default:
#DefaultLimitNOFILE
Change it to DefaultLimitNOFILE=65535 or DefaultLimitNOFILE=4096 or to whatever value you want it to be.
Solution was originally found on the Superuser Stack Exchange, here: https://superuser.com/questions/1200539/cannot-increase-open-file-limit-past-4096-ubuntu
Works still fine out of the box on latest proton versions
I had played a lot but recently took a break for like 6 months or so. When I installed the game again and ran it, it would crash right away, without starting the launcher. Even on custom proton and on proton 4.2 of which many people say it worked fine.
After runnning Steam and the game in the console, I notice a gamemode error. While initially not sure what caused it, I eventually checked my launch options and noticed there was nogamemode command% -nointro in there. I took the first part out and only left the -nointro option. Launcher and game works fine. I think that launch option was recommended here or on some forum, for users having issues with Fedora or something. I don't remember right. Long story short, if you have not played for a while and just came back, check your launch options.
I played this both on Windows and Linux, with about 1200 hours on Proton, and it works fine and out of the box.
Frequent Alt-Tabbing in and out of the game might cause a black screen and the game has to be killed either by clicking Stop on Steam or using HTOP or something. I did not experience this issue before, until I installed KDE Neon. However, it is not an issue related to ESO, I think, since I do have the same issue with some other games as well.
Works fine out of the box with Proton 4.2. The only thing I had to do was to add WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command% to the launch parameters in order to get NPC voices.
Perfectly fine out of the box. No issues at all. Even some of my addons like Multi Craft work just fine! Excellent!
Works perfectly fine out of the box. I got all addons (including Elsweyr) and all DLCs (though ESO+). No issues at all. I even run some addons with it, like for example Multi Craft.
Works fine right out of the box. No issues at all, even with default settings.
Works fine out of the box. Out of three starts, the first time it hung itself up, when I Alt-Tabbed right after starting the game (before anything happened). I think I could have just waited or pressed escape but I did not know. The second time I had to press ESC during the black screen on start up to get to the main menu. On the third try it worked fine without any help. It just took a long time (I had breakfast and watched a show while it was loading). The game itself works fine. Peformance even on medium (lowest preset available) is sluggish at times, though generally playable. Alt-Tabbing is not working. It won't hang the game or crash it. You can always return to it, but you can't get to your desktop or any other open window. I will give a Platinum rating, since the issues with performance and Alt-Tabbing are related to the game itself and there are the same issues on Windows. So it is nothing that is caused by Steam.
