Cannot connect to servers due to EAC
Game runs mostly fine with occasional crashing, but multiplayer is impossible to due the devs deciding not to support Linux in their EAC instance.

MANGOHUD=1 MANGOHUD_CONFIG=font_size=20,cpu_stats=1,cpu_temp=1,gpu_stats=1,gpu_junction_temp=1,gpu_mem_temp=1,ram=1,vram=1,fps=1,frame_timing=0,time,time_no_label,time_format=%R,position=top-left gamemoderun %command%
You don't need any initialization option. I have used mangohud and gamemoderun, but don't need. I have tested in many Protons: 8, 9, Experimental, and GE-Proton9 (.17 up to .21). All them have the same performance. About graphics, i have Windows 10 in dual boot and i can same FPS is exactly the same. This game is poorly optimized, it is not a problem with Linux, Proton or the hardware. To be able to play with the BEST graphics, set Screen Space Reflections, Terrain Tesselation and Global Illumination to OFF. You can leave Shadow Quality at LOW.
works out of the box

PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=1 gamemoderun mangohud %command%
depending on hardware - some configuration from in-game menus may be required.

Runs out of the box
Latest game update fixed the game getting stuck in an infinite loding screen.

Game freezes upon starting a new game
Tried Proton 9.0 and Experimental. In both cases the game just freezes after hitting the start button on (at least) a single player game. The game used to run fine in the past though ...
Works perfectly fine

PROTON_USE_D11VK=1 %command%
Occasional crashes when alt-tabbing
Some stuttering after a few hours of play (fixed by exiting and loading back in), and alt-tabbing can cause crashing. Other than that, it plays great.
Have not tried multiplayer.
Works perfectly for me out of the box, no instability or graphical artifacts.

Video snippets not showing during the missions, didn't stop me to complete vanilla game. Didn't miss much either, comparing to youtube videos. Currently playing Reforged Eden and it is a great experience, plays perfectly in every way. Playtime: 1000+ hrs.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
slight crackling every now and then, not really annoying
sometimes when joining my friends the game would completely freeze when connecting to their server, a bit annoying but it's also an issue on windows
I used these threads to get to a close enough place from where I did my own testing and found out the best solution. https://empyriononline.com/threads/linux-steam-proton-issues.98167/ and https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/4911

Cannot use servers with EAC, otherwise fine.
I play RE / RE Atlantis Next mod which is even harder on the system. Runs pretty well. I did a huge drone attack in a belt. 30fps 1080p docked
I recommend a community controller layout. The built in controller thing is missing key features.
I have everything on low, and I get around 100fps in 1080p for average game play.
Fsr works very well. Default proton works out of box.
One thing to note is the battery life is roughly an hour and you are subject to power thermal throttling. Even with the throttling is runs fine.
Only major issue is the root kit needed for some servers, but luckily I'm part of a community that doesn't need that.
Overall a great amazing experience.
Perfect. never played in multiplayer, always single, but it's perfect, high playable. FPS ~60.

6-8 fps with a massive delay and the memory leak is enough to hardcrash my pc to the point of having to turn of the power, not playable
significant input lag
the game was completely unplayable at 6fps with a massive delay
when launching singleplayer all sounds outside of EGS were completely broken
frequent crashes, 7 or 8 fps constant
I tried all of the debugging steps but nothing works so I would not recommend playing this game on linux at the moment. I was really looking forward to getting back into it after years of not playing it

Fullscreen and windowed full screen resulted in black screen when moving mouse to other windows, windowed mode works well at least in dwm
I play on a server with no EAC
Make sure to install GE-proton properly to make the game run well

PROTON_USE_D11VK=1 %command%
Running straight from Steam, I was having major slowdowns in areas with lots of trees. Ran alot better using GE-Proton8-9 and using PROTON_USE_D11VK=1 %command% in launch options.

Performance is too degraded to be pleayable.
Runs significantly slower than Windows 10 install, dropping to single digits.
Slight input lag, similar to bad vsync lag but without vsync turned on
FPS low
Tutorials and story stuff don't show, don't think you can play on EAC servers, pretty sure this'll improve soon.

Video Tutorials don't play
Did not experience any issues with exclusive fullscreen on hyprland as other might have.
Works well if you don't need EAC.
Alt-tabbing makes the game stop rendering
You cannot play on servers with EAC. Will receive "NullClient" error.
Unplayable FPS
Game runs great on Windows 11 on the same PC with nearly maxed settings. Tried lowest settings on linux and still unplayable. Tried with GE-Proton7-43 and default system and steam settings (no tinkering or launch options). iGPU graphics disabled.
Vanilla runs fine. Using Reforged Eden scenario will crash on steamdeck without adding a 4GB swap file (experiences out of memory error in dmesg)
Reforged Eden may require adding swap space, but vanilla should run fine
Note: Vanilla works fine, Trying to run the popular Reforged Eden Scenario causes a oom (out of memory) error which can be fixed by adding creating a 4GB swap file
HARDWARE I RAN: steamdeck, might run better on a normal system that doesn't have shared memory with the GPU
Running Vanilla: Game will run as is if you aren't running any workshop mods that change the scenario
Reforged Eden: This is a popular scenario that I basically can't play the game without. If you are playing this scenario, the game will randomly crash or some saves won't load. If you check dmesg, it's caused by an out of memory error which can be fixed.
RUNNING WITH REFORGED EDEN: The out of memory error is caused by the steamdeck running out of memory. You can fix this by creating and configuring a 4GB swap file on linux (this is used as emergency memory if the deck runs out of RAM). RE just requires more memory than vanilla so you'll need this for loading the scenario.
Follow below tutorial in desktop mode except use 4G instead of 1G https://linuxize.com/post/create-a-linux-swap-file/
Single player quests will break the game and require you to reload the game quite a lot. But otherwise, it works fine.
Window sometimes freezes when alttabbing if in exclusive fullscreen mode. Just use the fullscreen mode without exclusive.
NPCs stop moving whenever a quest video starts to play because it's not supported in proton, apparently. Can be fixed by reloading the save every time a quest log plays.
Single Player game crashes immediately after first scene (landing).
Working well after the latest update which has a newer version of EAC which seems to run under proton now. Previously wasn't able to play.
I've been playing this game for years. Took a break. Now it doesn't work AT ALL. Upgrade 1.8 seems to have broken it.
Tried a crazy startup string that I found on here. No dice. Tried Proton Experimental. No dice.
In-game setup to lower graphic settings
gamemoderun PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 %command%
FPS never went beyond 15 no matter the graphic settings

WINE_FSR_OVERRIDE=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=2 MANGOHUD=1 %command% -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd -force -d3d9
Laggy input, likely due to very low framerate.
Unplayable framerates, even with FSR at 900p I couldn't get more than ~25 FPS on everything set to the lowest settings.
With or without launch options doesn't matter. Performance is always in unplayable territories. Played this a long time ago on Windows on a much much weaker system with much more FPS. Until a fix comes along I'd consider this game to be borked.
I have always enjoyed Mincraft for Nerds...er I mean Empyrion Galactic Survival and recently I switch to Linux
Small Stuttering depending on what I was pointed at.
WIth EAC off was able to connect to my Private Server with about 12 others on at the same time.
Tried with the suggested commandline options others had listed but with them I couldn't play but I tried with No command line options a it work just as if I was running it on Windows.
Some structures like small repository would flicker invisible when looking at them from particular angles
Controller was not detected on initial launch, had to go to settings using the touchscreen and disable and re-enable the controller option
Game defaulted to 1280x720, changed to 1280x800. Ran quite poorly on default (near-max) settings ~17-20fps, changed to fast preset, ran ~35-47fps when outdoors on foot, dropped to ~22-27fps when riding motorcycle, fairly solid 60fps in space.
Played with EAC disabled. While playing multiplayer beams from the survival tool i.e. salvage and resource mode had incorrect textures,
Overall is in a rather playable state, the game's own controller layout is functional if weird
Running a personal server with 10 friends, log in with my Deck with no problems.
The only trick to enjoying this was setting up a controller profile that wasn't insane.
