Game plays out of the box. Minor annoyance: Game will open (in full screen) in left most screen. I have to manually move it to the other monitor.
Game works normally, I completed first couple of missions. I was able to save without issues. Windowed mode is broken the same way as it is on win version. Widescreen patch is working, look for it on Caesar Discussions page on Steam.
As other user explained, install wine+winetricks and then install corefonts using tool from github. It take some time to finish installation in terminal. Game will run with black screen and music. After intro is completed, main menu will pop up and game runs just fine. XBOX 360 wireless controller is recognized, but maneuvering is awkward as aiming reticule is jumping around too fast. Playing with mouse is a way to go.
Video snippets not showing during the missions, didn't stop me to complete vanilla game. Didn't miss much either, comparing to youtube videos. Currently playing Reforged Eden and it is a great experience, plays perfectly in every way. Playtime: 1000+ hrs.
Started a game so conquests.ini is generated under /home//.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete/Conquests/. The game will start, but the launcher screen will be a mess. Esc will exit the game. I edited the conquests.ini by adding PlayIntro=0 and KeepRes=1 entries: ... [Conquests] PlayIntro=0 Voice Quality=0 ScrollSpeed=1 KeepRes=1 Prefs Format=2 ... After launching the game, music will play but screen will be black. Just ALT+TAB and ALT+TAB back to the game and the launcher will appear. At this point, just start the game.
Besides the crackling sound, there is no music.
Black screen is completely gone, thank you Steam and Proton 5.02! I tried adding Rise and Rule mod, but was missing files, same as in Win 1.22 Civ 3 version. I am sure modding is possible, just need to dig for missing files.
I have to change my rating given couple of month ago. With 3.16-4 Proton, Wings! run out of the box, no issues at all.
