Unplayable FPS
Game runs great on Windows 11 on the same PC with nearly maxed settings. Tried lowest settings on linux and still unplayable. Tried with GE-Proton7-43 and default system and steam settings (no tinkering or launch options). iGPU graphics disabled.
Runs great with no issues. Only one minor issue that is easily alleviated without tweaks.
The game doesn't release the mouse input while in fullscreen mode and attempting to ALT-TAB in a way that is compatible with GNOME on Xorg.
A simple workaround is to exit fullscreen mode (ALT+ENTER) before ALT+TABing or switching workspaces (SUPER+{PGUP,PGDN}).
Game will not start without this tweak. Backup and then remove vulkan-1.dll from the /.steam/steam/steamapps/common/No Man's Sky/Binaries directory.

Additional notes:
Fresh install of manjaro-kde-19.0.1-200228-linux54 (kernel 5.4.22-1) up to date (2 updates after install). Everything installed on Btrfs root. Only other things installed (besides the game) are radeon-profile-daemon and radeon-profile. Game graphics settings (ultra+): https://pastebin.com/U31ts4c6.
This is for getting the game to run on Proton 5.0-3 from an updated, fresh install of the latest Manjaro when normally it won't even start.
- Set game properties to force the use of Proton 4.11-12.
- Run the game once and exit.
- Optionally remove TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML from game binaries directory to reset graphics setting detection (different Proton versions resulted in different NumLowThreads and NumHighThreads for me. Both sets of settings work fine for me. YMMV).
- Set game properties to force the use of Proton 5.0-3.
- Start the game and enjoy (set your preferred graphics properties if you reset them).
Notes:
- Works with both kernel 5.4.23-1 and 5.5.7-1.
- Standard open source drivers version 2018.05.04
- I couldn't find anything useful in any logs so I reinstalled Manjaro-KDE 4 times to find the exact minimum steps that work for me. I hope they work for you. I still do not know why this works or if it is working how I expect - I don't know how to check. For example, does Proton fallback to the earlier version even when "forced" to use a higher version? The different versions appear to perform differently but that is the only metric I can currently compare them with.
Starts up normally and plays acceptably after enabling proton in Steam options.
Minor artifacts on trees.
Frequent stuttering on Ultra (not present on Manjaro or Windows). More noticeable when turning (motion blur?). Stuttering all but disappears on default video settings (high preset).
Notes: System was fully updated prior to testing. Steam installed via RPM Fusion non-free repository.
