surprisingly, the game needs less tinkering to run on linux compared to windows, videos require a mod to work
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command%
i made the config
some text such as ammo counters might be a bit difficult to read
Many sounds are missing and will require dsound.dll component.
videos wont play by default
the ingame videos by default use the WMV video codec, i made this mod to fix the issue
https://www.moddb.com/games/commandos-2-men-of-courage/downloads/commandos-2-steam-deck-videos
besides that i suggest you use the dsound.dll component
- Download dsound.dll 32-bit version 10.0.10586.0 from dlldownloader.com
- Place dsound.dll in C:\windows\syswow64\ in commando 2's proton compatibility container folder
- In steam, go to Commandos 2 properties -> launch options and enter: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command%

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command%
I confirm ZTylerDurden tutorial:
Many sounds are missing and will require dsound.dll component. Proton/Winetricks dsound.dll version causes more audio issues. You have to do the following for perfect audio:
Download dsound.dll 32-bit version 10.0.10586.0 from dlldownloader.com
Place dsound.dll in C:\windows\syswow64\ in commando 2's proton compatibility container folder
In steam, go to Commandos 2 properties -> launch options and enter: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command%
For custom gamepad config, refer to my community layout "Commandos 2 with Radial Menus"

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command%
Some sound effects are missing unless tweaked
Movies between missions don't work. It's also an issue with Windows.

Starts good
Played with Proton 7.0-5
Better with virtual desktop 1024x768 via protontricks
Game spawns multiple windows with all cutscenes running in parallel. Main menu not accessible.
Sometimes quicksave crashed the game
I completed the whole game play without any issue
Works out of box on default proton. Only need small fix for sound.
To fix sound issue use protontricks 6830 dsound

Crashes sometimes when loading or saving
Using Proton 4.11-13, running with no issues at all. No tweaks needed.

I think that it is better to play the original in this state than remaster. I was waiting for remaster, but original is still a great game.
Sound effects are problematic, music and voices are fine.
Game crashed sometimes, so I had to save often.
Changing from fullscreen to windowed(CTRL+ENTER) mode crashes the game.
Crashes after completing a mission, but you can continue after loading the game again.
Pressing ESC or CTRL+ENTER crashes the game too.
Works fine on Proton 3.16 or Proton 3.7. Some fixes are required though.
Sound effects are missing. Installing dsound with protontricks or winetricks fixed the issue.
Game starts in fullscreen on 2nd monitor by default. Upon ALT-Tabbing out and back into the game, it appears correctly on the 1st monitor but appears cut off, probably due to both monitors using different resolutions. Clicking enter to start a game or enter the options works fine and fixes this.
On Proton 4.11 and 4.7 the game crashes a lot when clicking something, pressing ESC or Alt-Tab. I was able to significantly reduce these crashes by using Proton 3.7 or 3.16. This has allowed me to play through the entire tutorial without any crashes.
It was working finally on older Proton Versions without crashes. On Proton 4.11 it wouldn't even start. On 4.7 it crashed a lot. Resolution doesn't seem to match the settings. I could set the resolution in the game to my native one, but it would stay in low resolution anyway. I think like 1024x768. Missing sounds can be fixed by running protontricks dsound. Overall with these changes, I made it work just fine and without crashes.

Working out of the box.

Unable to play in multiplayer mode using hamachi

Under 4.2.3 the game keys do not function properly ie, the keys do not what they are mapped to do. This makes the game unplayable

Runs flawlessly

Games starts and is completely playable. Only problem is that game videos doesn't work and sound effects doesn't play. WineHQ suggest to use native dsound.dll in order to fix this problem (didn't test it yet, but in Commandos BCD winetricks dsound breaks the game).

Runs fine
