Followed other instructions and installed binkw32 and d3dx9
Weird Text Issues
I'm so glad I can play one of my favoritest games after finally figuring out how Wine works

WINEPREFIX=/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks d3dx9
some minor text glitches still appear, but it runs fine. I don't know if netplay works yet. I also had to run 'WINEPREFIX=/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks' to install blinkw32. It makes the text glitches less noticeable. They only appear near the text cursor
if it will work on your machine 'WINEPREFIX=/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks d3dx9 blinkw32' should do both automatically
If you don't do any tinkering, it will black screen and freeze

Installed binkw32 and d3dx9
Does not start without the Protontricks

Installed Binkw32.dll, all the d3dx9.dlls, and MS Core Fonts
Minor text degradation. Fully readable.
Windowed Mode Not Working Properly
Needs some protontricks, and it's not designed to run at higher resolutions, but it does work.

If the game doesn't work, double check these instructions.
1). Intall wine and winetricks Wine: https://wine.htmlvalidator.com/install-wine-on-ubuntu-20.04.html Winetricks: https://wiki.winehq.org/Winetricks
2). Install and run Sword of the Stars on steam with default latest Proton (this could change, I use 7.0-1). NOTE: This first startup will fail but this game appears to build files on first time startup that I like to have present before applying any fixes. Close the game after.
3). Run this command but replace 'yourname' with the your profile in /home directory. Make sure there are no spaces anywhere in this command.
WINEPREFIX=/home/yourname/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks d3dx9
4). Go to the game installation folder. Copy and Paste sots.gob and sots_local_en.go to your /home directory (NOT /home/yourname). NOTE: DO NOT DELETE these files in game directory after coping to home directory.
Great game. A great mod to use for the game is BSOTS.
A black box appears for a second, then the game exits
Tinker winetricks d3d9 for the prefix fails, complains about 64 bit wine prefix
Just some weird text oddities, nothing too major
Had to install D3XD9 through ProtonTricks and use Proton 5.0-10. Once set up, it ran as it would on Windows with just the text oddities I described.

Run "flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks && flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 42890 d3dx9" to install d3dx9 that's required for the game to run (only applicable if you're using the flatpak version of steam, otherwise just run "protontricks 42890 d3x9").
Used the flatpak version of steam.

Does not start past install
Running WINEPREFIX=/home/yourname/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks d3dx9
, copied sots.gob and sotsen_local.gob, playing with proton 5.0-10, it wont start.
Reinstalled wine because I thought i did something wrong, nothing.
If you have anything to suggest I do to fix it, email me at tdmorey05@gmail.com
Odd line in text. Still readable, and nothing preventing gameplay.
Had to run using Proton 5.0-10
Not working with Proton 5.13 / 5.8(eggroll) /4.11

You need to install DX9 with Winetricks (WINEPREFIX=/home/yourname/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks d3dx9 ) and you need to copy sots.gob and sots_local_en.gob in your home directory. Then it run's smoothly.
Crashes right at the start.

1.) installed wine and winetricks from winehq.org 2.) changed steam settings to enable steam play "for all other titles" 3.) installed Sword_of_the_stars via steam 4.) as described in protondb and winehq: i opened a terminal, navigated to the ~/.steam directory where the "Sword of the star" files are found, copied the 2 files (sots.gob and the sots-en...) to my home directory as described in protondb. then i executed from terminal the command (replace 'horst' with your linux username: WINEPREFIX = /home/horst/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks d3dx9 5.) launched "Sword of the Stars" via steam launcher. Runs perfect, only screen resolution needs fullscreen to be able to change
change of screen resolution settings work only in fullscreen mode, not in window mode
please support winetricks better. otherwise, great work! thank you sooooo much!
When trying to run the game without any fix, the file "session.log" in the games install folder stated the following error/warning:
"Warning: [Render\SimplePainter2.fx] Failed to create D3DXEffect"
"Warning: [Render\SimplePainter2.fx] Couldn't load D3DX effect from file."
"Warning: [memory] Failed to create D3DXEffect"
d3dx9 was then installed via winetricks.
command ran:
WINEPREFIX=[path to steam install folder]/steamapps/compatdata/42890/pfx winetricks d3dx9
where [path to steam install folder] needs to be filled in as appropriate
Click play game in Steam, throws an error and fails to start. I also tried a few different Proton versions, same thing.

Error on Start up
I remember this working like a year ago or so. However, now it won't work at all. There is an error message coming up upon starting the game. The here mentioned fix to change the file paths in the .ini file or copying the respective files into the home directory, is not working.

Does not load. gives error of "application error occurred", then creates a "Mars.dmp" and then just gives a frozen black screen.
Moving the files as proposed below didnt change anything. Editing the INI caused the game to crash on load.

Gives error saying "application error occurred", then creates a "Mars.dmp" file. I tried moving the two files suggested in previous post to the home directory, but still failed to launch.

The game will run after some small tweaks. It normally fails to launch because it can not find the sots.gob file as it is looking for it in the user home directory. There are two solutions to this, first is to move, from the game folder, the stos.gob and the sots_local_en.gob(or the language that you have installed) to the user home directory. Second you can modify the sots.ini file(which is in the games base directory) and replace the two lines under [Modules] with Mount1=Z:\home<INSERT USER NAME>.local\share\Steam\steamapps\common\Sword of the Stars Complete Collection\sots_local_en.gob Mount2=Z:\home<INSERT USER NAME>.local\share\Steam\steamapps\common\Sword of the Stars Complete Collection\sots.gob Be sure to change to your current user name. If you have installed the game to a different directory, make sure to change the two lines to reflect the location installed, the two lines above are the default install locations.

Tried disable Esync
It saved a crash log to Mars.dmp.
NOTE: do no try to install the original Sword of Stars - it seems there's a cd key issue there.

Shows games own dialog about error log dump having been done
