Works
Works out of the box using Proton 5.0-5, but needs a fix for multiplayer.
Works out of the box!
The only thing, which I needed to perform was tuning my graphics settings to maximum, as they were set to minimum.

6.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The game works flawlessly using the Proton-6.21-GE-2 release.
There's a message message that'll appear each time you launch the game, that you're running on unsupported AMD graphics drivers (yes even on an NVIDIA card), but just click on OK and the game will launch.
All the graphics settings are set to low by default. You'll manually need to set them to High and re-launch the game.
Works out of the box!
The only thing, which I needed to perform was tuning my graphics settings to maximum, as they were set to minimum.
The game hangs indefinitely and just displays a black screen.
5.4-GE-3 GloriousEggroll
Works out of the box using GloriousEggroll release 5.4-GE-3.
gamemoderun %command%
- Yellow (distortion) pixels in the water reflection (only on the title screen)
- A few of the icons for upgrades are blank (there's no picture there) although I'm not sure if this a a bug in the game or caused by Proton.
The game works flawlessly. Only a few minor (barely noticable) artifacts on the title screen with the water reflections and a few missing upgrade icons.
Runs slightly better with gamemode enabled.
Works out of the box!
Gives a warning message that it doesn't recognized my graphics card, but runs without any problems after pressing "OK".
gamemoderun %command%
You need to be using a GE-Proton9-xx version. The first time you start the game you also need to be patient and wait. As it can easily take 10 - 15 minutes the first time before starting the game, due to the fact it's installing .NET Framework 4 and several other dependencies in the background. It works, just be patient.
Works
Played a few NOD missions and worked out of the box for me.
5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll
Used GloriousEggroll his Proton 5.8-GE-2-MF release and everything works flawlessly. I'd recommend it to certain players having issues with the vanilla Proton.
- I didn't notice any slowdowns
- I didn't notice any crackling audio
- The game started out of the box
- The video's played fine
gamemoderun %command%
Works fine out of the box, but performance is a tiny bit better when using gamemode.
gamemoderun %command%
Works out of the box using GE-Proton9-20 including my Logitech G29 steering wheel (I did disable the Steam Overlay, which I always do when using controllers)
DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
- The game runs using the Proton-GE version. The version I used was 7-33.
- There's slight stuttering when entering new areas or entering huge areas, though overall it's playable.
- Using A-Sync helps slightly with performance
- Running on a Radeon 6750 XT with 12GB VRAM at 1440p with original settings (High and Ultra stutter too much)
5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll
Works out of the box for me using Proton-5.21-GE-1.
- Only tested single player
- Did not experience any full screen or windowing issues as described by other users.
- Only played Halo: Combat Evolved so far
- Multiplayer is impacted by Easy Anti Cheat (so didn't bother testing)
Crashes right after the first initialization wizard
gamemoderun %command%
Needed to run: sysctl -w vm.max_map_count=262144 (as root). This solved my issue of the system crashing to the desktop. This solves all the audio hitching too.
I created: /etc/sysctl.d/99-vm.max_map_count.conf and added vm.max_map_count=262144 to make the entry permanent.
After tweaking the game runs flawlessly.
5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
The game works out-of-the-box.
The only minor issue I've experienced are the cutscenes between missions. They play for about a minute and freeze after. Pressing Escape will skip a cutscene and the next level will just continue loading, so you can still play through the campaign without major issues.
5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
- Hangs on exiting the game, but pressing the Stop button in Steam resolves the issue.
5.9-GE-1-NR GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll
The game crashes after every match.
- The game works, but crashes back to the desktop after every match.
- Multiplayer doesn't work
- Accessing the store doesn't work
The game starts and you can play 1 match, but crashes back to the desktop after.
Unable to connect to the online services, so retrieving or saving data is impossible.
The game always crashes after the first match.
Tested both with proton 5.13-1 and proton-5.9-GE-8-ST and both give the same result. Could this be related to the bug that also plagued Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Mortal Kombat 11 in multiplayer?
gamemoderun %command%
Works slightly better (more consistent performance) with gamemoderun enabled
5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll
- Tried the game using the Proton 5.0-7 release, but it is unplayable due to constant micro stutter.
- Tried the game using the Proton 5.8-GE-2-MF (GloriousEggroll) release and this resolves the micro stutter issue, making the game fully playable out of the box.
Doesn't work
Hangs indefinitely at the splash screen using Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF.
4.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Initial micro stutter when starting a match.
I've got Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath version working with Proton 4.21-GE-2 with some minor problems.
- Microstutter for a few seconds when starting a match
- Gamepad input doesn't work
- Multiplayer doesn't work
5.9-GE-1-NR GloriousEggroll
Used Proton 5.9-GE-1-NR (GloriousEggRoll release)
The game works using the latest GloriousEggroll release with a few side notes.
- Multiplayer doesn't work. It disconnects as soon as your start the match
- The frame rate in the Krypt is so awful that it's unusable
5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
These protonfixes are included in the GloriousEggroll release and applied automatically.
The audio dialogues during cutscenes are missing, due to an incomplete implementation of mfplat.
The game fully works and performance is even slightly better than it used to be on Microsoft Windows in my experience. However, to get this game to work at full performance and prevent occasional microstutter you'll need to perform some kernel tweaking. One of them is applying the futex patch from to your kernel.
Refuses to launch
After the 17-11-2020 update, the game refuses to launch and just returns to the desktop.
- Random performance drops on certain stages (Kharron's Ship)
- Micro stutter whenever a Krushing Blow is performed
- Random performance drops in The Krypt (sometimes it'll be fast and sometimes it'll be slow; sometimes reloading The Krypt helps. This is really random)
- The game crashes when entering Story Mode (likely mfplat issues)
- The game crashes whenever a match against Kronika starts (likely mfplat issues)
Denuvo
- The game works but you need to use Proton-5.21-GE-1 or a custom Proton TKG build
- If the game hangs once on start-up, it'll keep doing so even when switching Proton builds. To resolve this issue you need to delete the prefix.
- If you try to start the game more than 5 times while it hung, the game will refuse to start for 24 hours as the Denuvo DRM protection will kick in.
Works out of the box!
The mouse stutters a little bit in the menu
Doesn't work
The game doesn't launch at all.
I've tried using:
- Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
- Proton-5.4-GE-3
- Proton 5.0-7
gamemoderun %command%
I've experienced 1 (hard) system crash of my system so far while playing the game. No idea why though, as dmesg didn't show any related logging. After playing it a second day for 3,5 hours everything seems fine so far.
It works out of the box, but it's recommended to use Game Mode as it slightly enhances the performance of the game.
You alsno need to disable Global Illumination in the game settings when using a NVIDIA graphics card, otherwise the game will hang after a few minutes of playing.
5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll
- Hangs on exiting the game, but pressing the Stop button in Steam resolves the issue.
Does not launch with regular Proton 7.0-4
Works out of the box!
The game sometimes causes the system to crash and reload the amdgpu drm driver and when it happens amdgpu keeps reloading and I need to reboot my system.
Some minor crashes back to the desktop here and there. This games seems to be sensitive and prone to crashing in general.
Works out of the box
The game seems to just randomly hang out of nowhere after playing 2 - 3 hours. I need to kill it forcefully and start the game again when the issue occurs.
Minus the occasional crashes.
5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll
The game works fine out-of-the-box. Nothing to add, besides that multiplayer wasn't tested.
The mouse stutters a little bit in the menu
The mouse stutters a little bit in the menu
Sometimes the game crashes when starting the first time due to the EA app updating in the background and not reloading properly. Starting the game again resolves this issue.
Did not work with the vanilla Proton version (7.0-4) for me. It was displaying the Activision logo in a purple color spinning around with no sound. After it hung endlessly with a purple screen in the background and no music.
Resolved the issue by switching to GE-Proton7-33.
The game crashs every 2 - 3 minutes because it's trying to contact the Epic Games servers for some reason.
Resolved by adding the addresses below to hosts /etc/hosts. 0.0.0.0 datarouter.ol.epicgames.com & 0.0.0.0 datarouter-weighted.ol.epicgames.com
Disabling Steam Input resolved the issue.
Works well using GE-Proton8-4. All that is needed is disabling Steam Input for Xbox One controllers to get detected.
gamemoderun %command%
The game itself works flawlessly, though it seems to keep running in the background when you exit the game. Pressing the "Stop" button in Steam resolves this issue.
6.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The voices slightly echo when inside a building.
gamemoderun %command%
Works a tiny bit better with by using gamemode.
gamemoderun SteamDeck=1 %command%
The game plays fine for 2 to 3 missions and then crashes back to the desktop while loading a new game. When this happens I just restart the game and can continue playing.
