Works with NVIDIA 550 drivers, but not newer ones
The game is stable with high graphics settings on the 550 drivers. Newer drivers like 570 only run the game on low settings, and the game usually freezes after a short period of item.

gamescope -W 2560 -H 1440 -r 120 --force-grab-cursor -f -- %command%
Had to use --force-grab-cursor otherwise cursor would go slightly out of window, making edge panning not work in game nicely.
(none)

Everything runs out of the box.

Works out of the box
Zero tinkering required, smooth gameplay at 1080p with maximum graphics settings. Played the first three campaign missions.
As good as on windows, you can even outperfomance windows if you have hybrid CPU by pinning CPU with gamemode to perfomance Cores

The game is running quite well without any configuration except setting the Compatilibility option for Proton.

Worked OOTB, just installed and played. I have played one full match against AI without any issues
Have not tried campaign or online multiplayer yet

Requires login on real Windows before it's playable
As of Immortal Pillars, game requires Xbox Live login and will crash if it can't open the MS Native login box. Fixed on my machine by temporarily installing the game on real Windows and linking my XBL to my Steam account in-game.

gamescope -W 1280 -H 720 -b --force-grab-cursor -- %command%
Does not launch with resolution higher than 1280x720p
Does not launch with resolution higher than 1280x720p
Runs fine when forced to run in specific resolution (1280x720p). Any higher resoultion crashes. The menu mentions that my GPU does not provide enough vram so i guess this is related to the game not being able to detect the GPU properly (warning at startup).

Would only work with Proton 8.0-5
Encountered a bug that would cause the icons in the UI to start disapearing, I created a mod for the game that puts a band-aid on this. It is called 'Linux Icon Fix' in the mod manager

Works out of the box!
Gives a warning message that it doesn't recognized my graphics card, but runs without any problems after pressing "OK".

Used to work before the update
Tried all the below tinkering tips with no success
Used to work perfectly fine before the update that added the DLC content. Since that update, I get a black screen with just the cursor and music playing. None of the tinkering fixes below resolved this for me.
After deleting my proton copatdata folder for this game, I was able to get to the initial startup interface to select game settngs. If I left these as default and set graphics settings to Low, I could get into the main menu. As soon as I set anything above Low, the game would lock up. Then when I started the game back up again, I would be met by the same black screen.
No issues on Windows, so doesn't seem to be a graphics card compatibility issue; I can comfortably set graphics settings to High in Windows with no issues.

update broke it
worked when the game launched but now it crashes with a d3d12 error whenever I look at certain icons ex: husbandry. nothing i've tried changes anything.

With this older version of proton, the game works - but you do get an Unknown GPU Vendor warning at launch
Starts up to a black screen with music playing

Error message about GPU on launch but other then this works OTB

Runs out of the box with Custom Proton

Last update has fixed the game.
After the other update break the game for some even on Windows, this last update has fixed it and now I am able to play again.

Impossible to play since the last update without tinkering since the last update a few weeks ago.
I followed some instructions of this page: https://forums.ageofempires.com/t/games-ui-no-longer-showing-since-latest-update/268643/7
More specifically:
- Find the file "userprofile.xml" using
sudo find / -type f -name "userprofile.xml"
- Set the value of the line
<lastselectedciv>6</lastselectedciv>
to1
- Launch the game again, the base settings and tutorial prompt should reappear as if the game was launched for the first time
A few icons do not appear correctly

Overall it runs and it is playable, but the annoyances have led me to playing this on windows over my Linux setup.
Cursor escape is a frequent issue.
Experienced extreme slowdowns. Have tried various versions of proton but experimental seems to work best for me.
Main menu is black, music plays and you can still hear the mouse cursor moving over menu items.

Game broke last update.
After the last update the main menu does not render the interface, making it impossible to play the game.

Very difficult to play unless you are already familiar with the icons/hotkeys for each unit.
Most training and research icons and idle flags will dissappear leaving a hollow button
At some point I will always get a D3D12 error that if left unacknowledged the game will continue playing as before.
I am able to get it to launch and even play with newer proton versions, but only the cursor shows over a black screen. If I hover over where the buttons are supposed to be, sound effects will play and I can select them. I can even start a match, but it will remain a black screen.

Eventually worked after hours of constant computer lockups. On Ubuntu you must use kisak-mesa drivers to even get to the games main menu.

Strange FPS drops
Must use kisak-mesa drivers for game to work
Out of the box, and tinkering for hours. Game would always lock up system, requiring a full power reset. I tried everything I could think of, updating system, trying every launch option I could, trying every steam Proton version, Experimental / GloriousEggroll, all with the same problem. Also tried changing kenel versions twice from 6.9.5 up to 6.12. Going through dmesg and syslogs. Never found any clues. Just would show "GPU RESETTING" and would hard crash. --- The only fix I could find after hours of messing around. Was using the kisak-mesa drivers. I've had some major compatibility issues with these drivers so I tend to avoid them. This was the only fix I could find. Maybe a combination of the Kernel version + the kisak mesa drivers. But soon as I added the kisak drivers. Game started up without any problems. Other than a few FPS drops. Game now plays near perfectly.

Missing icons in tech tree
With default options (Latest Proton / Experimental / Hotfix), I had sound playing but black screen after the splash screen. Was not able to play. Works flawlessly when downgrading to Proton 8.

RT is not enabled. I couldn't find a way to enable it for now.
I installed steam, downloaded age of mythology retold and launched it without any problem. I just played 2 skirmishes and it worked!

gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -r 60 --force-grab-cursor -- %command%
The cursor was not grabbed by the window in Hyprland, fixed using gamescope
Works flawlessly in Singleplayer and Multiplayer, no major issues. The cursor bug can be fixed using gamescope and the --force-grab-cursor option. Experienced some rare desyncs in multiplayer after one hour, not sure if these were even caused by Proton.

If you can manage to navigate the menus without having to read the text, the game is playable.
Most text is missing. Very difficult to navigate the menu with only the first letter of every line.

Works perfectly out of the box.
Works perfectly at max graphical settings, at 4k resolution. No tinkering of any kind. I played only for 2.5 hours, though. Currently it is using proton 9.0.3, which is the latest standard version.

gamemoderun PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%
Few tech icons are missing
Tried some launch options but nvidia DLSS, RTX etc. options are still disabled. "Unrecognized GPU" pop-up on launch. Xbox Sign-In doesn't work.
The game works flawlessly ! The missing icons is a minor problem because you can still see the text. Microsoft won't let us log to xbox, just like in the others AoE. The unrecognized GPU is a bigger problem because you can't use DLSS,RTX etc. but it run great without nvidia stuff.

Works flawlessly out of the box
Audio output always switches to my headset on startup (because it has a mic probably), need to switch it back every time.
Was able to beat all 3 campaigns on Linux without any problems. Didn't play multiplayer.

Hybrid Nvidia dGPU stutters. Change to NVidia only.

A few missing tech icons

I followed the instructions from https://aom.arkanosis.net/linux/ in order to avoid desync issues on Linux. Simple, a few commands to replace a .dll file. Honestly I didn't even try playing before completing this process as desync was such an issue with other Age games on Linux in my experience.
I can bot stomp with my friend who plays on Windows. All is well.

Running on the latest mesa-git did not work. Needed to remove and install the default mesa drivers. After refreshing steam (steam --reset) and reinstalling all proton versions it started to work.. played a couple of hours now without any major problems.
