Works great. 70+ fps 1440p Ultra.
If you find it too blurry - google how to edit the config file to disable fringe and other unneeded effects (not Linux-specific, just the path a bit different). To make the settings file read-only you can use something like sudo chmod 555 ENGINESETTINGS

several crashes, also one time my PC got completely frozen after alt-tab during save loading
It was not working with the 465 drivers (vertex explosion), but it is fixed in 470.
The ultrawide cutscenes hex-editor fix works fine.
Had a weird issue that it was asking the game key on launch, resetting the Steam installation (iirc steam --reset) fixed that.
Sometimes some lines in the dialogues get skipped. Usually not too often, e.g. just two times during the initial island quests, but sometimes it gets very severe, restarting the game helps. ESync/FSync is disabled as was suggested in some reports here, PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
Had to enable Wine virtual desktop (see other reports) to fix black bars. I heard GE Proton also fixes it? Anyway, it's not 100% Linux bug, some people on Windows complain about that too.
Alt+Tab works, but after that there are some weird input lags for some actions, e.g. may need to press Space several time to dodge, and the bow stops working.
Also applied the hex editor fix for black bars in the dialogues on ultrawide monitors, it's the same as on Windows, just ofc you need a different hex editor app (and possibly need to run it as sudo, e.g. sudo ghex
) and different game folder path.
Sometimes fps becomes lower than usual and drops to 5-10 during actions/dialogues, restarting the game fixes it. Maybe related to the shader cache and increasing it could help?
Also sometimes weird stutters every 2 sec appear, restarting the PC fixes it (restarting just GNOME doesn't help), not sure what causes it.
It freezes sometimes and I need to Alt+Tab to kill the process (press Stop in Steam). Possibly an Nvidia driver bug, there are similar reports for other games.
Need to disable overlay in Uplay settings (e.g. via Wine tray or game menu) to remove the message about outdated driver, and should kill the process (or press Stop in Steam) after exiting the game because Uplay does not stop.
The same as other Ubisoft games.
Mostly fine except some issues described here, played on mostly max settings, lowered Volumetric Clouds which are supposed to have the biggest impact on performance.
Sometimes lighting gets weird during indoor cutscenes, not sure if a Linux issue though.
Sometimes it freezes and I have to alt-tab and kill it.
Some time ago it stopped working on Nvidia, but recent drivers fixed it. Using the hex editor fix for ultrawide cutscenes.
Works fine, 50-70 fps on Ultra 1440p.
Sometimes it freezes and I have to kill the process. Could be something with my setup, had similar issue in MGS 5.
- Sometimes Alt key activates the Gnome window context menu, so I just remaped climbing to X.
- There is some stuttering when camera moves in cutscenes, but turns out it's a common issue on Windows too.
- The only annoying issue is that Steam does not detect game exit, so I have to restart Steam.
- Uplay was showing warning about outdated graphics driver, disappeared on next launches after opening it from Esc menu and disabling notifications in settings.
60-120+ fps max uw 1440p but some issues with shaders and crashes on launch
There are some weird issues on launch, possibly related to shader caching. On the first start everything was great, Steam and the game itself cached shaders, but now after some time (maybe afster switching Proton versions) the game starts with 2-10 fps in the main menu like when caching shadsers (but it only displays the progress with 0% for 1 sec) and it often crashes with "Out of video memory" error even though it seems like there is lots of free video memory. But if it manages to load the save then everything works fine (sometimes after 30 sec of stuttering), including reloading and going to a different location. Disabling the shader cache in the game settings makes it stutter all the time. Tried deleting ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/668580/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/AtomicHeart/Saved/Config/
, the shaders recompiled like on the first launch but the issue returned after relaunching the game (deleting the Config dir does not seem to affect the settings).
Works fine, 60-120 fps depending on location and no stuttering, but some weird issues on every launch.
Works well, rare minor stutters, 1440p ultrawide
Works well (besides some weirdness with the controls and camera, but it's not because of Linux), played the whole game, mouse+keyboard.
Had some minor stuttering, mainly when loading new level or moving to a new location. Not even sure if it's Linux-specific. Switched to Proton GE as was recommended, but I think it did not make any difference. Anyway these stutters were quite rare, so it was not a problem.
Audio worked fine, did not need the fix mentioned here. Maybe because I use Pipewire.
Works out of the box, 1440p ultrawide
was crashing on the final boss when it fires the red arcs while switching to the next phase, worked after settings the graphics to low (and reverting back a bit later).
Installed MF using this command, without it the game got stuck on the intro cutscene
git clone https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install.git /tmp/mf && \
WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/738520/pfx" \
PROTON="$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton 7.0/" \
/tmp/mf/mf-install.sh -proton
no cutscenes
no cutscenes
Works great, hundreds of fps, but story cutscenes are skipped. It's not really the most important part of the game though.
Not playable, fps drops to 5-10 fps all the time. Better with WineD3D, but still stuttering and 20-40 fps. Changing Culling settings did not help.
According to the issue in the DXVK repo it's caused by Nvidia driver, so hopefully will be fixed in the next driver.
Works fine with Nvidia 450 driver
Was unplayabe with Nvidia 440 driver, after installing 450 it's much better, but still sometimes there are stutters, especially in big areas on foot. It's not always noticeable though, it's not a First Person Shooter, and I think enabling 70 FPS lock in settings helped a bit.
Other settings: 1440p, High, VSync off, 50% Culling Prediction, 60% Culling Accuracy (not sure if culling makes any difference).
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr %command% -dx12
Works fine, 60+ fps max settings RT + DLSS 1440p ultrawide, but it seems to require more VRAM than on Windows (at least as of November 2021), which was a problem for me when I had 8 GB 3070 Ti and used the mod fixing blurry textures/texture pop-in (only in the DX12 version, the DX11 had no such issue, but no RT), see my reddit post or the comment in #4157 proton gh. Now I have 12 GB 3080 and there is no such problem anymore.
Works fine, 60 fps 1440p ultrawide, High-Ultra, RT reflections + medium lighting, DLSS balanced
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_1 %command% --launcher-skip -skipStartScreen
Played the whole game, did not encounter any significant bugs, no crashes. Not sure if all these flags are still needed for RT/DLSS.
VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_1 %command% -dx12
Had a weird long black screen on first launch, but apparently it was just loading.
Froze my PC after I switched to Vulkan in settings. After that I disabled Steam Overlay as was recommended by someone (not sure if that's what fixed it for me) and it worked fine,
100+ fps max settings 1440p ultrawide
did not start out of the box, works fine after selecting 7.0.5 Proton
The single player campaign works with Proton GE after renaming EasyAntiCheat folder. Does not launch with standard Proton or Experimental.
120+ fps high-ultra settings 1440p ultrawide (without "min fps" enableed). Sometimes fps suddenly drops, I think mainly after next level loading, until the game is restarted. Probably not a Linux issue, there is a similar bug described in PCGW.
Another weird thing I encountered is that the game was not launching after I killed it via Steam during benchmark run. Rebooting and deleting some cache files in the game dirs did not help, had to reinstall the game.
70fps ultra 1440p ultrawide
Works great (except that it requires a Microsoft account for some reason :D), no crashes.
Noticed some FPS drops in some cutscenes, at least before the first and last bosses.
I used Proton GE, but I think the standard one works well too.
Had some stutters at the beginning, probably shader caching.
Works fine. Had some issues with enabling full screen, but eventually it worked after clicking it several times in the settings.
Works fine. Had some issues with enabling full screen, but eventually it worked after clicking it several times in the settings.
Sometimes performance drops after 1-2h, need to restart the game.
Proton-6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.5-GE-2
No cutscenes/tutorial movies with standard Proton. With GloriousEggroll everything works fine.
40-50 fps High 1440p ultrawide, not sure if it supposed to be like this, but it's ok for this type of the game.
Usually 60+ fps, but sometimes some drops. Had 3 crashes during 100+ hours. Mods work the same as on Windows.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp.dll=n,b" %command%
The ultrawide fix by Rose (downloaded from PCGW) works fine, 1440p 21:9, just copied the files and added the dll override via launch options.
Sometimes it's jittery when moving the map using mouse, but it's not a big issue.
There is no mouse in menus, but it's the same on Windows. Use W/S to move up/down, 1/3 to move left/right, LMB or space to accept, RMB or Esc to go back/cancel.
Works fine out-of-the-box. 120-150 FPS on high/extra high 1440p (after removing 60 FPS lock via config). Finished the intro (hospital) and the first mission without any issues or crashes.
Proton version has great performance but crashes, had to play native
Tried the Proton version because it has better performance (140+ fps). After some time started to experience weird crashes (see issue #4170 in Proton GitHub).
So then I tried the native Vulkan version (livelongandprosper in the Beta tab in Steam). It has good performance too and no crashes in game, but it was crashing on Alt+Tab. Possibly related to the drivers, distro or something because other people did not have this issue.
So I chose the standard native version, because no Alt+Tabbing sucks for me, and the performance was mostly good enough, 60-110 fps at max 1440p. Only had horrible performance in some areas of the dump near Gastown.
Proton-6.10-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Fullscreen and Alt+Tab work fine with GE, but sometimes it resets to windowed mode on launch and I have to go to the settings again. I think it happens when the game is killed via Stop in Steam/killing process. Though it's probably not Linux specific, on Windows there are some issues with fullscreen too.
Also if I open the GNOME "Start menu" ("Show applications") when the game is running (after Alt+Tab), everything freezes and I cannot restore the game or any app, have to logout or reboot.
Keybinding settings were not saved after exit, not sure why, gameinputmodule.pf
was simply not rewritten. Audio/video settings were saved fine. So I had to dual boot into Windows and install the game, save keybinding settings there, copy and make the file read-only. You can try editing gameinputmodule.pf
manually as described on PCGamingWiki, but the format is quite complex.
Also the launcher sometimes crashes on launch, so you may need to restart the game several times. There is an option at the bottom of game settings to skip it.
Mods (ScriptHook) did not work. See at the end of #4220 issue in Proton GitHub repo.
Several times cutscenes were too slow to load (had audio, but no video) and I had to kill the game. It starts from the cutscene after loading the save.
The cutscenes are not 21:9 on ultrawide, you can apply the hex editor "fix" like on Windows, but it's not a good fix since some pre-rendered scenes will stretch with wrong aspect ratio.
After Alt-Tab the game window was becoming small, switching to borderless instead of fullscreen fixed that.
The EA thing was getting stuck on black window with Proton 9 and 7 (deleting compatdata/1238000 did not help). Experimental seems to work fine.
VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%
Works fine, the only issue is that enabling hairworks crashes the game. Besides that, almost no crashes in the main game and both DLC. Had several crashes in a row when loading a save in one of the train-only chapters, solved by loading an earlier autosave. Had some fps drops in the desert chapter and in the beginning of the Sam DLC. Normally it was at least around 60 fps in the outside areas, higher inside.
Works fine, 1440p ultrawide max settings
Sometimes it crashes (freezes), I think only when doing something with UI like quests, army menu. Not sure if a Linux issue, some people report similar crashes on Windows.
If I change any settings (keybinds, graphics) after starting the game (loading a save), then fps drops to 2 until I relaunch the game (also changing the settings again several times may fix it).
100+ fps max settings 1440p ultrawide
Works fine, no issues with fullscreen and alt+tab (KDE X11, 2 monitors), though once I managed to do something after alt+tab that caused it to not restore. Later I disabled the second monitor because I think it was causing tearing, maybe because of different refresh rates or because this prevents gsync.
Several times the fps dropped to 10-30 (I think after opening new locations or starting some missions) until restaring the game.
Native had no sound, Proton 8.0.1 had some issues with changing resolution, 7.0.6 works fine.
Works well, 1440p ultrawide
The only serious issue I noticed is that the extra missions (from the main menu) do not start, the game freezes afetr clicking the button in some hint. Not sure if Linux-specific, I did not see such reports anywhere.
Also sometimes it crashes when opening new skills.
Another small issue is that the credits at the end of the game are not displayed (black screen). Other cutscenes/videos worked fine.
7.0rc3-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Sometimes it works for hours, sometimes it crashes several times in a row. Not sure if Linux-specific though.
Works well with Proton GE and %command% -ignorepipelinecache
(not sure if both are needed). With the standard Proton was crashing every 30 min not allowing to even finish the prologue.
The ultrawide fix from PCGW works too. Launch the game, Alt+Tab, env WINEESYNC=1 protontricks -c 'wine ~/Downloads/rdr2_uw.exe' 1174180
(renamed the mod .exe for convenience)
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr %command% -nolauncher
Works mostly fine, but crashes sometimes. I think mainly when it loads different locations like when moving between different parts of the hidden city, some tombs. Once it was crashing several times at the same cutscene start, I think lowering the graphics settings.
Had huge fps drop (to 30-40) in the forge DLC tomb. All other tombs and locations worked fine, 70-120+ fps.
Also had strange sound cracking in the first mission when moving through the city, exiting to the menu and reloading fixed it, no problems after that, using Pipewire.
And it often recompiles shaders when starting the game, maybe should increase the cache size.
Works better with Proton
Native was working weird, starting in a small 720p window (and changing resolution did not work) on a wrong monitor. Proton works fine.
Works fine after switching to Vulkan, 100+ fps max settings 1440p ultrawide
Sometimes it crashes after alt+tab. Usually not a problem because you can save frequently.
Had to run WINEPREFIX=......./Steam/steamapps/compatdata/495420/pfx/ winetricks d3dcompiler_47
in terminal to fix crash after tutorial.
100+ fps 1440p ultrawide. I do not use the ultrawide fix from PCGW, seems fine without it and it only made things worse.
Works well, 60+ fps 1440p ultrawide
There were some minor cracks sometimes, I think it started after moving from PulseAudio to Pipewire.
No crashes. There were some stutters on the first launch, but after that everything was fine, so I guess it was just shader caching.
On ultrawide some cutscenes can be 16:9 (but they switch back to 21:9 shortly), there supposed to be a fix on Windows, but I did not bother because it was only in form of weird .exes or Cheat Engine tables, and some people were saying that it does not work even on Windows. Ultrawide experience is good enough already.
Crashes before menu with 5.0.9, freezes with GE
Crahes before menu after the logos/wall of text/login animation with standard Proton 5.0.9, also tried 5.0.10 rc by enabling Proton betas (next
). Proton logs show some network errors at the end.
Proton-5.9-GE-5-ST, Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST - launches fine but freezes after 30 sec, have to kill the process.
Proton-5.6-GE-2 - the same as 5.0.9.
Works fine except Uplay issues, 50-60 fps 1440p ultrawide
Need to enable Borderless Fullscren, otherwise not restoring after Alt+Tab.
Crashed several times (froze and need to Alt+Tab and kill).
Need to disable the overlay in Uplay settings (e.g. via Wine tray or game menu) , and should kill the process (or press Stop in Steam) after exiting the game because Uplay does not stop.
The same as other Ubisoft games.
But unlike other Ubisoft games (recently played AC Odyssey) here for some reason Uplay shows a message about crash, and often does not start at all, so need to Stop/restart via Steam, sometimes 5-10 times. Also I need to enter the login/password each time.
Works fine with the latest Proton, with 5.9 it was crashing before menu.
But I think the DLC/online stuff is not available yet because of EAC.
