Attempted to play the game using the Logitech G920 wheel - it felt unnatural and almost unplayable compared to on Windows because there is a large deadzone in the center of the wheel.
Playing with a keyboard/mouse works as expected, no issues were encountered here.
Game is unoptimized as expected for its age - ran at 60-65fps average at 4K ultra preset.
Game completely froze and was unresponsive after switching to the Steam overlay while paused in a bus race, requiring a restart. This issue never appeared again, even after 3 extra hours of gameplay.
Noticeable crackling sound in some cutscenes but not during gameplay.
Audio completely cut out after a few minutes of playing, needed to restart the game to resolve. The audio issue never came up after that.
Minor stutters during cutscenes, no noticeable issues during gameplay
Runs with some annoyances
Issues encountered only in the Campaign
- Previously noticed crackling audio exclusively during cutscenes, but now have experienced sometimes even during gameplay and cutscenes. Haven't found a fix for it aside from restarting the game.
- The crackling audio is consistent with the stutters/hitching during cutscenes.
- At one point, the audio completely cut out, and a restart was needed to resolve that issue. It never came up during gameplay after that.
Both audio issues appear to be resolvable by restarting the game, but some will still come back after some time of gameplay.
Noticed stutters only during campaign cutscenes.
Issues encountered only in the Campaign
- Sometimes the game will launch with a black screen and will need to be restarted.
- Occasional crashes when pre-mission cutscenes end in the campaign.
- Rare crashes during gameplay, unable to tell what exactly causes this.
Was able to reach round 15 in a private match of Exo Zombies (about 20 minutes of gameplay) with no issues. Didn't test Exo Survival or Multiplayer.
Re-wrote report to include issues found during 7-8 extra hours of gameplay.
Tested the game on both the official Proton version 9.0-4 and one provided by the CachyOS gaming package, primarily on 9.0-4. Both Proton versions appeared to still have the same issues during gameplay.
Load times were as expected for a SSD, crashing issues were only in the campaign. Can't recommend playing this on Linux if a player were only looking to play the campaign, or if stability and/or a smooth gaming experience is important in that mode. The above issues were not present on Windows with the same hardware.
Constant stutters during gameplay
Game works normally, but doesn't load DLC
Was able to run 15 waves on Survival with no issues. The only issue I've noticed is that the DLC packs would not show up in the game, even though it's bought on my Steam account.
DLC would not load and be playable unless game files were manually copied over from my previous Windows install
Audio in some cutscenes occasionally cut in and out. Wasn't able to consistently recreate this issue, unsure what causes it.
Audio in mission cutscenes and intro are significantly louder than in game - recommend turning down system volume before launching the game and starting campaign missions.
Stuttering primarily during cutscenes, but also occasionally noticeable during gameplay.
Recommend preloading shaders before gameplay if possible. Stutters in campaign cutscenes were experienced even with the setting to compile shaders during cutscenes disabled.
Tested with the listed hardware at 4K maximum video settings. Framerates averaged around 90-110 during gameplay, but have been lower in some missions (primarily noticed in "All In" and "Blackout")
Played on fullscreen borderless, couldn't switch to other windows while the game was running
Occasional micro-stutters during gameplay and in the beginning of some cutscenes in the campaign
Audio in campaign cutscenes would be noticeably quieter than during gameplay, appears to be about 60% of the volume compared to during the missions.
- Freezing in cutscenes of every other campaign mission played. The audio would still play, but the game would otherwise be unresponsive.
- Campaign cutscenes would occasionally completely freeze when the game is tabbed out. Audio would still sometimes play, but the game would be be unresponsive, requiring a restart.
- Crash experienced in the cutscene after the drone sequence in campaign mission "Fallen Angel" - this issue also occurred when playing on Windows.
The game will generally not launch when forcing Proton 9.0-4, Experimental, or Hotfix. Sometimes it will launch, but would then immediately crash right after the game application opens.
Played a public match of Zombies on Green Run - Town, was able to reach round 20 with no issues aside from some connection lag - likely due to me not being the host of this match. No noticeable issues when playing a solo game - tested on Town, Bus Depot, and Origins.
Multiplayer was untested. The above issues were only in the campaign - Zombies ran flawlessly.
Takes little to no resources to run. Playing the game will be difficult because it doesn't support the controller buttons on the Steam Deck - just the touchpad or a mouse if available.
Missing ground textures when trying to ADS through a stack of boxes
Works normally on standard resolutions
Game does not center itself when playing on 4:3 resolution, works fine with 16:9 and 16:10
Was able to complete a full Deathmatch game with no issues on 16:9. Playing on 4:3 will cause the game to only display on the left side of my monitor and not be centered like on Windows.
-dx11
The game window did not center itself when trying to run at 4:3 resolutions, just sits at the left 2/3 of the screen. Mouse inputs were also not accurate - had to have the mouse about an inch or so to the right of the button that I wanted to click on in the menus.
Standard 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions work normally.
- Minor stutters in main menu, goes away after a few minutes
- Lost about 20% framerate compared to Windows - game hovers around 180-200 FPS compared to 220-260 on Windows
- Choppy framerates during gameplay, likely what caused the input lag feeling I noticed
Consistently got VAC authentication errors when trying to queue a game using Proton Experimental and 9.0-4, went away once I switched back to my default Proton version.
Originally tested the game at 4K max settings with the listed hardware. Also lowered the video settings to the "medium" preset but it didn't change or resolve the performance issues that I experienced.
The -dx11 launch option isn't necessary, tested with and without it and didn't notice a difference in gameplay experience. It appears other people have reported that it has made a difference for them, so this may depend on your hardware.
Small stutters while playing for a minute or two after loading into a map. Game runs normally after that.
Game runs at 90fps at 4K high settings with my hardware and 150fps at 4K lowest settings - could be that the game is just unoptimized.
Didn't need to adjust any settings or launch options - was able to continue from my PC save without any issues.
-w 2560 -h 1440
Black screen at launch when launch options aren't added
The game works about the same as on Windows - only need to set your resolution in the launch options (w = width, h = height).
Was able to play the first two parts of No Mercy without noticing any issues.
Works normally, mods may be an issue
Crashes sometimes, unsure if it's because of add-ons/mods. Didn't notice crashing on Windows.
Was able to play through most of The Last Stand campaign with friends without issues
Runs without issues
Mouse cursor would completely disappear after tabbing in and out of the game, would require a restart. Only happened with the CachyOS Proton version.
Occasional stutters and freezing during gameplay with the CachyOS Proton version
Recommend using official Proton versions if playing on CachyOS
Works perfectly without modifications
Was able to complete a full game without noticing any issues.
Proton version from CachyOS gaming package.
Was able to complete a full game without noticing any issues.
Game does not launch
The anticheat and game logo appear and then disappear after loading and a few minutes, respectively.
Forcing Proton Hotfix, Experimental, and 9.0-4 didn't resolve the issue.
Cursor didn't get captured by the game for about a minute after loading into the game.
Tested with CachyOS Proton version, Experimental, and 9.0-4. Framerates stayed around the 85-95fps mark at 4K maximum settings running with the above Proton versions.
Set screen refresh rate to 50hz on battery power
The game runs perfectly fine on the default version of Proton - no noticeable performance difference when running it on Proton Experimental.
I did experience a lot of constant framerate drops/stuttering when I had reflections enabled. Would be borderline unplayable in areas other than the Velvet Room and the dorm.
Tested with both the CachyOS Proton version and 9.0-4 - no difference between the two.
Runs at 4K max settings with reflections enabled at a consistent 120fps. Did not notice frame drops or graphic anomalies during gameplay.
A controller is recommended, keyboard and mouse controls out of the box are terrible.
Set maximum screen refresh rate to 50hz when on battery
The game wouldn't register left inputs on the right stick when I had the left stick pointed upwards.
The game ran well on battery power, and was able to be played at 1080p connected to an external display without any noticeable issues or framerate drops.
Sometimes launches to a black screen and will stop responding from there.
Added bAlwaysActive=1 to the [General] section in the Starfield.ini file - this allows the game to continue running even when tabbed out.
Wasn't able to access other windows on the same monitor as the game. Needed to move windows to a second monitor in order to access them during gameplay.
Noticed the game crashes only when changing the graphics quality preset in the settings.
Tested the game primarily on the Proton version provided by the CachyOS gaming package, but did briefly test on Proton 9.0-4. No noticeable differences between the two versions.
Also tested the game with the ultra, high, and medium graphic presets, motion blur disabled, DLSS Ultra Performance, and frame generation enabled to try and improve performance. No improvement or differences were spotted - the game consistently ran at around 88-100fps around Akila City at 4K with the above presets.
