Black screen while trying to play
Everything works till you try to start a game. I've tried every Proton version that you can choice on Steam. Nothing works and you have the same problem.
The procedure is the next:
- Start the game, select resolution and play
- Start a game in the main menu
- Black screen with background music
I only experienced missing textures at the very beginning. In the next zone just before knowing main character's name, the textures are missing. However the game runs and works perfectly. I didn't have another problem. I've played till the end and nothing else has failed.
Borked since the latest game update
It doesn't work anymore. It doesn't even load the menu, once the game runs it hangs on the LOADING screen.
protontricks 962130 -q dotnet40
I got the information from a post on GitHub, and adapted to my case, special thanks to StarAurryon.
- Run the game once after installing (On my case the DirectX worked, it's just a bit slower installing)
- The game may hang on the loading screen
- Alt + Tab to kill the process through Steam
- Run the following command on a console:
protontricks 962130 -q dotnet40
- Wait till it's done and run the game
- You may need to follow this video to do the Xbox login: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjpNhiv9_FY
Enjoy! :)

Works flawlessly on max graphics while adding gamemoderun %command% as launch option
Before adding the command I had some fps drops specially in crowded parts (enemies, sfx).
The installation and the game run fine but it's impossible to play, the fps are constantly at less than 10
Notes:
- The game crashed with the default version Proton 5.0.9
- Using this version does not require any more tweaks
- Just follow these steps and enjoy :)
Works almost flawlessly, except some graphic glitches and some laggy moments.
For some reason there was some issue when first loading the game. Some textures were missing (minimap overlay, health and mana, some icons), fortunately this was solved the moment I played a bit and restarted (I guess starting the game once would be enoguh though.
Sometimes I a bit laggy experience when getting in certain zones. (no lagg besides that)
Character selection screen is really weird, everything is bugged, almost no kind of textures there, just transparent and some bloom. (this however looks like it's been there for months, haven't seen any devs response on this even after being reported by multiple people on their forums).
- Sometimes the game hangs on the loading screen after starting it.
Concluding Notes
I must say I appreciate the fact that devs make a native build of the game. However, there's been at least the character selection screen bug for months and it's still no fixed. While it doesn't make it impossible to play. It's indeed an issue because you can't see your character or the screen itself. Only the UI.
I had an error trying to play and the game did not start, so...
Here's what I did:
- LIBRARY
- Right click mouse button over "Metal Slug 3"
- "Properties..."
- "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..."
- Add this flag in the textbox: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
- OK
- Enjoy!
After that everything worked fine. No glitches, no errors, nothing !
Early to say, but as long as you don't care if the textures are at the minimum capacity it should be good to go.
The game was going really slow until I set the graphics on performance mode and the render scale to the minimum. This made the game playable at the cost of quality textures.
Just at the start of the game, the intro video isn't loaded but the game runs after that.
The game is pretty new and Early Access so I bet it also needs some work on the devs part. Note that this report is just temporal until I have played a bit more. I'll probably update it eventually. I think with better or different cards may work better.
Works perfectly
Steam overlay does not work on native version. However, there's no problem to use it when you play the game with Proton :). The game performance is awesome!
Not a single issue, everything works as expected.
It works flawlessly with the new Proton version !
Sometimes the game freezes for a second when you encounter a lot of foes and there are too many animations. Not exactly sure if it's a proton issue or not but disabling Vsync will prevent this.
One of the most pleasure experiences using Proton, the game looks native, not a single issue
Steam - Error: Failed to request product key from Steam, please try again in a few minutes.
You can download the game. But it won't even run, you get this error when you try to install it.
- Load screens takes about 14 or 15 seconds.
The only weird thing is the one with the loading screen. There's no much to worry about 14 or 15 seconds. However, if you multiply it by 4 or 5 changes... It gets really weird, that could go around 75 seconds.
The rest works perfectly
I also tried with:
- Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF (GloriousEggroll version)
When you use the Glorious Eggroll Proton Version, the time in loading screens goes from 14 - 15 to 4 seconds. That's a really superb change.
Not available on this platform. Make sure you're using the right launcher.
The game was working flawlessly before... I don't know what happened but now it's impossible to play due this error. I've tried all proton versions including Glorious Eggroll's one. Nothing worked. You just get this error on main screen and the game exits.
Now works flawlessly thanks to the new Proton update !
Finally the game works again thanks to the new proton update. It doesn't give platform error anymore, I suppose because they updated proton according the use of sdk and the game.
Enjoy!
It works but the main menu gets stuck at "Steamworks Initialisation Failed"
As I've read on discussion forums, it looks like some people on Windows are facing the same issue. We should probably wait a bit as it's still early access and was released yesterday.
With the latest update on Proton Experimental, now it works flawlessly, including the initial cinematic
Thank you for your huge effort Proton team! :)
- It could work if graphics were not being teared in horizontal lines. I think the game could be playable if this could be solved
- The game runs. However, when you try to play it's just impossible. The graphics are tearing in horizontal lines. So you can't see almost anything.
- You have to install dotnet40 in order to change the configuration as Kustom said. When you do it you can change some settings like the fullscreen option.
I've tried with all current proton versions you can choice. I was only able to made the game work with GloriousEggRoll Proton.
The only big problem here is that any time you try to play, there comes the horizontal lines.
