installed 7th heaven

An unkown error has occurred at Chocobo Races after Corel Prison (Dyne flight).
Specific game-breaking crash at Chocobo Races after Corel Prison. Unable to proceed in the game. "An unknown error has occurred". Bug occurs long after significant story and a boss fight which makes replicating it frustrating and time consuming. Looking online, others are also reporting this issue too.

Loads to initial game launch menu, but crashes after clickling 'Play'
First time running anything under Proton; seems like something simple must be wrong with my setup since this is a pretty low-lift game for modern hardware

Requires Steam Deck touchscreen to get past secondary launcher.
Use touchscreen to get past secondary launcher. Might need to find a different controller layout.

I tried various versions of Proton, including GE version, but the FF VII launcher screen would appear and then crash. Subsequent launches would never launch the launcher.
I uninstalled, then switched to Proton 3.7-8 and it worked! Launcher launched completely, and then I was able to launch the game from their and it worked.

It's not the optimal way to play ff7, that would be with 7th heaven, though that's not easy to get working, this however is incredibly easy.
Download latest version of FFNx and extract contents into FF7 game folder, also download this mouth replacer into the fields folder located in the games data folder.
This is the best and simplest experience I've had with this game, 7th heaven is far too much of a pain to install and get working.
Recommended adjustments for FFNx.toml: Fullscreen = true aspect_ratio = 2 enable_antialiasing = 16 enable_lighting = true enable_time_cycle = true enable_analogue_controls = true enable_auto_run = true enable_steam_achievements = true show_version = false show_renderer_backend = false ff7_fps_limiter = 1 ff7_footsteps = true

Hopefully this helps someone else, I spent hours messing around with wine and 7th heaven trying to get something working, but ended up falling back to this, maybe I'll save someone else the time lol.
Game runs great, no issues
shout out to shadowninja for giving information about a script somebody made for installing 7th heaven on linux
it runs really great and not need to change proton or mess around with the settings.
Used for setting up 7th Heaven Mod Manager
The game runs perfectly and is also readily modable with 7th Heaven. There is a script available on GitHub that automates the process of installing 7th Heaven on a Steam Deck but this script can also be used on a normal PC Linux installation with a minor edit to the script to remove the flatpack protontricks alias at the top of the script if you have not installed protontricks via flatpack (e.g. Arch Linux System installing protontricks from the AUR).
Link to script and dependancies: https://github.com/dotaxis/7H-SteamDeck-Fix
Note: make sure you have protontricks, wget, and rsync installed on your system, otherwise the script will fail. Follow the prompts and you should be good to go.

modding is rough but oh well...
i wish there are linux native version of 7th Heaven mod manager, that would be awesome and made my life a lot easier.
It runs perfectly out of the box with Proton 7.0.5/7.0.6
I have played over 90 hours of the game in Linux. The game crashed only twice and there were no slowdown at all.

Tried both Steam input and without FFNx made it work, I had to remap it ingame.
No controller support without modding.
The Chocobo Racing minigame made the game crash every time
The alt-tab make crash the game, otherwise, everythings works.

Just change controller layout to Pandahero's "FF7 Steam Deck" and you can tap "A" to make it past the initial screen. No fuss, all game!
This is a classic, so don't go all crazy with mods, just have fun the way it was meant to be played!
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
wont work on proton experimental and 7.04. Crashes about no Direct3d
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
Some minor stuttering
graphics were pixelated in battles
Runs great out of the box.
Works perfectly out of the box
I was expecting windowing issues but there were none and I was able to switch windows and multi task easily.

Wasn't clicking, used Decks touch screen. Though subsequent launches it seemed to work fine.
Works fine, no issues that I found.
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
Default config didn't work. Adding "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%" to launch options and switching to Proton-GE got the game to launch properly. Controller support is atrocious for a PSX port. Steam Input doesn't work and I'm not able to modify the binds VIA the launcher or in-game, but that may not be exclusive to proton.
The launcher/in-game controller mapping does not support X-Input natively. Using "The Runion" multi-mod to add in native X-input support is highly recommended. Use https://github.com/MrSirKingLord/ff7_reunion_linux for installation instructions. Alongside native X-input support, the multi-mod adds proper 60fps battle menus (like the PS1 original), re-translation/localisation, and other accessibility changes. Go to "/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VII/The_Reunion/" to find the "Options.ini" for configuring the mod.
The launcher can only be navigated with a mouse. (Note: when using "The Reunion" mod, the launcher is only used for starting the game.)
Unmodded, Final Fantasy VII does not natively support X-input so both triggers and the d-pad cannot be properly mapped.
Technically untinkered play would still work 100% fine but button mapping will be more or less incorrect unless mapping the keyboard input to the gamepad.
The base game ran perfectly with proton 7.0-2. Some quirks - on plasma, I could only set the resolution to something other than my current display resolution in the Wayland session. It's a glorious first - Wayland doing something uncomplicatedly better than X11 (if you/your DE doesn't use wayland I guess this is what gamescope is for). Second - GE-Proton7-16 (my current go-to for best performance) didn't work, where mainline proton did. Third, though I didn't put much time into tinkering, I couldn't get the 7th Heaven mod launcher to work. It looks like there might be ways to do so but they don't look very easy, so OG graphics it is! I would mark the game down for this in the report, but technically this doesn't count as the game itself...
Initial launch window can be configured using the touch screen. The secondary splash screen however (titled "Keyboard") cannot be bypassed without pressing X on a dedicated keyboard it seems. Pressing X on the virtual keyboard did not dismiss the screen.
Cloud save service was offline when I tested but this might have been a temporary issue
There is also a patch available for 60 FPS battles but haven't tried it yet.

There's some minor sound cracks when you're in fights, for instance when attacking with x2 cut materia, the first slash can be heard, but the second can't. Sometimes it's vice versa. Alt tabbing keeps the sound of the game going in the background and on a loop. Everything else works 100%
100% the game no problem
Game ran fine out of box
Game seems to run fine and perform fine also out of box.
Follow my guide:
https://github.com/peterlink96/ff7_reunion_linux
Proton-6.21-GE-2 Reunion Mod ( needs dll overrides, registry entries from windows install, and modified aali.dll) WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b"
Registry path from original version: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII]
Registry path from steam version: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Steam App 39140]
Needs modified aali.dll with xinput removed - ask in reunion discord. Without it, the game doesn't launch and fails on XINPUTUAP.dll
XINPUTUAP.dll doesn't load with Reunion Mod default aali.dll
The game runs great, even if the framerate is capped at 15/30
The second screen of the game is entirely black. The rest is just fine.
Clicking the "My Profile" button on the launcher did nothing. The button should take you to this website. There you can view saves, achievements and boost your characters.
It runs perfectly out of the box with proton, albeit with minor graphical artifact
Seems to work perfectly so far 25 hours in
Beginning level at the reactor has missing textures for one room only, and they're restored after going through the dialogue to name the main character
Game comes with it's own launcher that imposes it's own control layout, doesn't detect controller at the launcher level so binds cannot be edited but they can once in-game to a small degree
With one incredibly small hiccup (beginning reactor for one room), I've experienced no gameplay issues or troubles running the game. Getting a PS4 controller working was a headache though, I found the best luck using the game's imposed layout in menu (which defaulted to keyboard) and binding the individual keys to the controller on Steam, which got movement via D-Pad working (movement is locked to analog stick by default). Also, viewing achievements or the web profile of your SE account via the game launcher seems to not work whatsoever.

Completely Borked
The game fails to play, sending me to a black screen before giving me 'An unknown exception has occurred' Error
I have signed up and logged in with an SE account, the launcher works fine, it's just the game not working at all.
Tried proton 5.13, 4.11-13, 3.7-8 and a couple of GE. Also tried fullscreen on and off as well as changing other graphical settings in the launcher menu.
None of this has fixed this problem.
Don't know if there's some launch option I need to type or what, but nothing is working to this point.
