The game run perfectly native, only can't open Steam overlay.
Steam overlay not shown

Playable, but probably need to tinker more
Late game crashes in a 4v4

Native caused screen flickering on my display. Solved by switching to Proton.
Drops from 60FPS to 24FPS for ~5 seconds every few minutes.

Works great out of the box
Could play one online 3h multiplayer game without any issues.

No sound with native builds & pipewire. Audio is fine with Proton.

A rare case when native exists and it actually works
Game is greatly optimized only taking 40% of my GPU rendering 144 FPS at maxed out settings.
mouse doesnt work properly in fullscreen, easily fixed by swapping to borderless
Works flawlessly without any tweaks

I've got a bug on Native version - all keyboard shortcuts are swapped for no reason. You can play game, but you have to change every single button. No problems on Proton version

sometimes after loading textures of terein just gone, solve is load again
In Mid- and Late-game I see lower FPS (gpu i silent cpu too)
Just native game (bad optimization but very stable)

Multiplayer requires an internet connection to a Northgard server. The server can be unavailable affecting all multiplayer game and preventing you from joining peer to peer game. When Shiro will stop paying for the server, multiplayer will be dead.
Sometime it can get tricky to join your friend try the following :
- avoid hosting
- join via lobby code
- close the game and join via steam

To enjoy the same experience as Windows in multiplayer, single-player and with the Steam overlay, you need the GE-Proton7-28 version.
Afin de profiter d'une experience identique a windows en multi, en solo et avec l'overlay steam il faut utiliser la version GE-Proton7-28

I tried native, proton experimental, v8, v7.
Wont go online sometimes, Multiplayer menu is not showing, cant go ready in conquest startup menu.

No complaints what so ever
Every game should be this easy and smooth to run!
Worked without any problems with no modifications.

No issues whatsoever
Runs flawlessly under proton 8. I havn't experienced any issues at all!
It's good enough to play.

Frame rubberbanding often occurs
No Audio when running under Proton
When running native, the steam overlay does not work

All great. Works straight out the box. I would recommend you switch the resolution to 920x1080 even if you're just playing on Steam Deck screen since otherwise all the in-game UI will take too much of the screen.
Works great out of the box with no tinkering required!
Change the controls and you're good to go. Main menu isnt optimal, but gameplay works great.
DPad buttons to select different units and open the build menu. Right stick to mousewheel to zoom in and out. Slowed down the mouse (personal preference)
Refresh rate 50 (as with most games)
Main Menu: Not everything fits the screen The option to increase UI Size makes text bigger, but then even less fits. In gameplay some combinations of windows overlap.

Great experience, works native as well
Perfect, thanks to devs
Northgard runs flawlessly as a native application
Due to the game's linux/run.sh
launch script, both the Steam overlay and Mangohud will not function. I don't consider this to be an issue regarding how well the game performs on Linux, but it can be annoying. To fix the latter issue, you can edit run.sh
like so:
LD_PRELOAD= LD_LIBRARY_PATH=linux ./linux/hl linux/detect.hl
LD_PRELOAD= LD_LIBRARY_PATH=linux mangohud ./linux/hl sdlboot.dat "$@"
gamemoderun %command%
Native version works great and is totally playable but my main problem with it was that steam overlay will not shown in game, So i tested windows versions with proton too, The performance on exact save with High quality ground textures and Medium shadows was:
Native => 156 fps
Proton - OpenGL => 155 fps (maybe same as native)
Proton - DirectX => 119 fps (surprisingly it performs worse than OpenGL)
for using MangoHUD on native version you need to edit ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Northgard/linux/run.sh
and replace LD_PRELOAD=
with LD_PRELOAD=libMangoHud_dlsym.so:libMangoHud.so
in each line.
TLDR, Proton version with OpenGL is better
Works natively. A game actually deserving of the platinum rating.
