I don't understand how everyone is saying it works by default when I can't even start a new game on a vanilla install.

Really straightforward, maybe a little bit problematic if you want to change graphic options, but I don't needed it.
A few hundreds (none of them graphical) of mods installed using Mod Organized 2 for Linux. It just works fine even if the last update broke some F4SE mods.
Small recommended changes for modding.
Enabled back buttons to add screenshots, quick save and other QoL options.
Limit TDP to 8 and limit FPS to 40. TDP limit could be needed to be removed in some exceptional moments, but overall I played around 70h and only a couple of hours without the limit were needed. I got around 5h of battery life only with this change.
I only tinker because of mods.

Fallout 4 works well on Deck! Although, there are some menus that don't display properly.
For me, some button prompts, such as "Press Y to take all" don't appear in workshop menus. The button actions still work, but you have to know the controls ahead of time. Besides that, I've not found any flaws in my 10 hours of playtime.

If the on screen keyboard is brought up in any context while the game is running it crashes

Cannot use the Virtual Keyboard (Steam + X) in the game without crashing the game.
Using ANY mods with your game will crash the deck.
After some more testing and tinkering a opted to amend my report.. First... While the virtual keyboard can be used when you are prompted in the game, you CANNOT bring it up with Steam + X without crashing the game.
Mods - forget about using them. As of this writing using any mods will crash the game and possibly your deck along with it.

TDP: 9W Resolution: 1152x720
Started new save with 10h playtime. So far the only thing was fans started roaring one time whil in weapons crafting menu.

TDP auf 9W gestellt

While this game runs quite well and has 0 problems, the latest next gen patch broke the ingame keyboard and many other things
DXVK_CONFIG_FILE=/home/deck/fallout4.conf SteamDeck=0 %command%
Changed graphical settings
Crash whenver your open your keyboard to name weapons, armor, player
The game will run quite well in 800p resolution after doing this:
Locking framerate to 45 fps, the aiming and shooting mechanics are so bad in this game that you'll not even notice the difference between 45 fps and 60 fps, most of the time you'll kill enemies using VATS anyway.
Changing default graphical preset to medium and tweaking it like so Texture Quality: High Shadow Quality: Medium Shadow Distance: Medium Decal Quantity: Medium Lighting Quality: Medium Godray Quality: Low Depth of Field: Standard Ambient Occlusion: SSAO Object Fade: 50% Actor Fade: 30% Grass Fade: 30% Item Fade: 25% Distant Object Detail: Medium Object Detail Fade: High
Now your game will have stable 45 fps in almost any location and you'll be able to enjoy it longer on one charge.
Keeping all of the above in mind, the game is Playable and can be completed, but after latest "next-gen" patch it doesn't deserve to have verified badge in any shape of form untill the keyboard crash, half frame rate on steam deck oled and unoptimised default graphical settings are fixed.

With the April 25th update Fallout 4 is basically unplayable. You cannot use the steam deck virtual keyboard to input your name for your character. If you have any mods download from the Bethesda mod Marketplace expect everything to crash on your game, taking the deck with it.

F4SE didn't load at all for me. After following various guides online, I was unable to get a modded FO4 experience, as F4SE and various mods that use it are integral for improved performance, bug fixes, and worthwhile additions.

Resolution: 1152x720 (FSR 2 sharpness), 8xAF , FXAA, Medium Preset with Godrays set to low.
Only once, resuming from sleep causes the audio to crackle
Sometimes exiting a building/area to the Commonwealth will cause the game to get stuck on the loading screen (noticed it happen often when exiting the police station where the brotherhood were holed up). In some cases, loading may take multiple minutes, but that's quite rare.
Ran surprisingly well on the OLED deck, even at 90fps. This was starting a new save, without any mods (just GOTY edition). Played roughly 25 hours with the majority of the time spent on the deck, but was also able to switch between the deck and PC without any issues.
The deck can maintain 90fps very well, but going more densely packed areas such as Diamond City and the surrounding areas can cause frame dips to 70ish for a brief time. Multiple enemies on screen (>4) will also cause FPS to dip if there are a lot of weapon projectiles firing. In most cases within buildings, you can hold 90 fps pretty well. Note that the playstyle was a melee build utilizing VATS heavily, which helps mitigate the occassional frame dips.
The Institute is not able to maintain a good framerate for some reason. I'm sure you could get a locked 60 with some settings tweaks, but having it run at 90 fps felt noticably better to me (plus it's also annoying having the graphics settings only changable within the launcher). Battery life was also good. No TDP limit set, and the total wattage was roughly 12W.

Have racked up a lot of hours with this game on SD, far more than I did on PC, can run it at 9w @ 40FPS or uncap TDP and 60FPS most areas!
Used 1152x720 with FSR with sharpening, helps with the blurry TAA.! Textures on ultra, shadows on medium, decals high, lighting high, godrays low, Bokeh and SSAO. All other options ticked! fade options I wouldn't go too high IMHO, not enough of a visual benefit, grass can be pretty low and the others a bit under the middle point. I've kept Distance / object fade on high.
Good stuff!

To be honest, I don't have much to say. It ran perfectly on my SD in handheld and I had no issues whatsoever. Great game. Buy it!

Absolutely no issues. It ran perfectly with Steam OS 3.4 release and no need to mess with anything, including no Proton or controller changes. I would highly recommend.

Considering yout PC is stronger than a Handheld Device, you should have little to no issues on a PC.
Stops seldomly for a few seconds and continues again within seconds.
Every now and then, mostly when the Steam Deck is getting hot.

El juego no arranca desde la actualización de la tarde.
He probado con la última versión de Protón y también con Protón GE y Protón Experiemental.
i renamed the exe's to something else then changed "Fallout4.exe" to "Fallout4launcher.exe" to skip the launcher.
added a console button
40 fps and refresh rate
the normal one
if volume of speakers is too high it makes loud popping
Runs smooth with the recommended Steam Deck setting. Haven't noticed any performance issues after 10ish hours.
40fps and 40 refresh rate cap.
Requires touch controls.
Runs well and looks decent even though it's running at medium or low. I've got FSR with sharpening at 3 and res at 720p, with a 40fps and refresh rate cap. Haven't noticed any drops below 40fps so far.

Launcher doesn't work with controller
2 things:
- To bypass the launcher, I did the following at the linux prompt in the main Fallout 4 directory:
- mv Fallout4Launcher.exe orig_Fallout4Launcher.exe
- ln -s Fallout4.exe Fallout4Launcher.exe
- At some point, my xbox one elite controller just would not work anymore in game (the steam button would work, but no other buttons did) - the fix was to go into the game settings (in game mode), go to Developer -> Clear Selected Controller Layout and it started to work again
Contrary to what others are saying, this does not work out of the box. Bethesda provides no controller support. Fast travel doesn't work.
--launcher-skip
40Fps
Runs perfectly out of the box, the only reason it isn't verified is because the initial launcher screen requires you to use touch input.
40hz, 800p, 8TDP, 800hz GPU clock and all medium settings except for fade limit on max got me an estimated 3+ hours. Didn't test how accurate that was but ~3 hours felt about correct.
The launcher only accepts touch input.
Enabling god rays caused horizontal banding across the screen.
Runs very steadily at 40hz, 800p, 8TDP and 800hz GPU clock with all medium settings except for fade limits cranked up to max. Only very occasional drops into the mid-30s during particularly intensive scenes like looking down at tons of bodies from a tall place like the top of the Corvega Assembly Plant or during particularly intense shootouts with lots of enemies and allies. Far Harbor was a little more demanding due to the fog effects but is easily fixed by bumping up TDP and GPU clock. The only times I noticed drops into the 20s was when I scoped in while looking right at a bunch of transparency effects like an enemy shooting a flamethrower or a vertibird explosion. All around great performing game on the Deck.
Touch screen on first menu but worked
Only occured after 30 hours of play and potentially linked to console command usage
R2 would sometimes not register
Disabled click on the right touchpad, mapped R4 to A button, mapped R5 to right stick click
Proton-7.0rc3-GE-1
Had to use touch screen.
Prior to tweaking the settings, I experiend a lot of crashes.
I was able to fix the crashes by doing the following:
- force launch proton experimental
- set the resolution to 992x620
- set the detail to low
- set the steam deck's scaling feature to FSR
- set FSR sharpness to 3
Hope that helps! Cheers.
tried recommended proton, experimental, most audio is missing, game file verification was done
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7.dll=n,b" PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%

No AA makes thin plants illuminate a purple tint around them
Game saves sometimes appeared to be corrupted, but loading all saves instead of by character showed they weren't
It's a Bethesda game; only glitch on Steam Deck in a 24 hour playthrough was a T-posing/stuck in animation Brotherhood soldier
As others have mentioned, busy scenes and large city environments make the frames chug, but not worse than already on PC. Even in the vertibird over the city, the game stays at 60 FPS until you load into a new zone/environment. Only settings I turned up was DOF and NPC/enemy loading distance to max.
With the refresh rate locked to 45 or 50, the game performs rather well with few slowdowns. Better performance than modern console.
Used protontricks to install Mod Organizer 2, though the instructions tell you to switch to an old version of Proton, I've found this is not required and works fine on Proton 7.0 & Proton GE 7+
Set refresh rate to 45 w/ vsync on in game, locked TDP to 13 (Any lower results in performance drops)
Sometimes there is text on the PipBoy that might be a little hard to read on the Deck, but it's managable.
Fallout isn't exactly known for it's rock solid stability. I'd say I experience the same occasional crashes I do when playing on Windows, both modded & unmodded.
Anything older than Proton-7 would result in the controller not working. Proton-7 or GE-proton-7x seems to work perfectly.
I highly recommend lowering the Decks refresh rate to something like 45 or 50 here, and set all of the games settings to around medium. This results in the fewest slowdowns, and running at around 45/50fps will help reduce stuttering when you are in places like Diamond City or downtown Boston. I've also found disabling godrays gives a pretty decent performance boost as well, though leaving these on low is still perfectly acceptable. For the best experience, install MO2, and run Fallout 4 Configurator to tweak the ini a bit for better performance, paying close attention to the ini settings for auto resolution scaling and auto distance scaling.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=”xaudio2_7=n,b” PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
I was able to resolve the missing audio and dropped frames by using the Launch Option: WINEDLLOVERRIDES=”xaudio2_7=n,b” PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
I only tested on Proton 6.3.8 due to Mod Organizer 2 requiring that version. I'm unsure whether more recent stable builds or Proton Experimental would have the same audio issues that I needed to tweak.
Game runs perfectly fine from what I have found at the default settings, it automatically chose low graphics, but its hard to even tell that its set to low on the 1200X800 resolution, so its fine. I'm honestly surprised the Steam Deck was able to get through the loading screens in only a few seconds it seemed.
Performance Heavy Areas I tested include:
Lexington - Only minor dropped frames at around 48 FPS for a second or two, then it stays at a stable 60 FPS.
Boston - Only minor dropped frames at around 48 FPS for a second or two but it was a little bit more frequent, but to be expected, then it stays at a stable 60 FPS
However, when on top of one of the skyscrapers and you look straight down onto Boston, the FPS can dip down to about 37, but if your just casually playing, you probably won't notice when fighting and looting.
Definitely a let down on the roleplaying department. But fun enough survival shooter when modded.
Installed Mod Organizer 2 to run mods. Highly recommend uninstalling High Res Texture DLC.
Low graphics preset. 30FPS cap with the performance menu. Nets me around 2 to 2.5 hour battery life.
Pipboy text is hard to read.
Unmodded game cannot use keyboard&mouse and gamepad simultaneously.
Framerate chugs when in Boston or there are a ton of explosions like with cars or explosive weapons.
Do not use an ENB with this game yet. Not even ENBBoost. Hard crashes the game.
Mod list I played with and highly recommend is the Welcome to Paradise mod list. Really easy to set up using Wabbajack. Great support too from the modders.
