Sometimes far away textures flicker, not sure why
Overall, with V-SYNC turned off it's more "fluid" than on Windows 10. No issues during short or long play sessions. I tried limiting frames to 60FPS (or 64FPS as somebody suggested), but it makes the fights a stutter show.

mangohud gamescope -f -w 1920 -h 1080 -W 1920 -H 1080 -r 144 --force-grab-cursor -e -- %command%
Without tinkering, the game experiences frequent stuttering and frame rate drops. In order to fix them, I had to download and run the 'FNV 4GB Patcher' as well as the 'FNV BSA Decompressor.'
After doing so, and setting the right launch options in Steam, the game now runs buttery smooth at an average of 130 FPS with 1% lows of 95 FPS.
Note: I also installed 'NMCs_Texture_Pack_For_New_Vegas' and 'NMC's Pre-Generated LOD Updated' but they shouldn't have much, if any impact on overall preformance.

Works (mostly) well out of the box
Occasional delay between input and action in game
Probably more due to the vanilla instability of the Game => Mods to fix are reccomended
Doesn´t start at all. Steam shows "Running" for a few seconds and then it stops.
Install ModOrganizer using the Linux ModOrganizer install script, and then follow the Viva New Vegas guide to improve performance. Runs just as well as it did on Windows.
Works perfectly out of the box with Proton 9.0, no configuration/tinkering. Didn't have any problems at all.

DXVK_FRAME_RATE=120 RADV_DEBUG=noatocdithering gamemoderun %command%
Sometimes the game would not let me tab back in or would crash when playing in fullscreen, setting the game to windowed locked the frame rate to 58 fps.
For anyone using the GOG or Epic version of the game wanting to use Viva New Vegas, you need to use Proton as all versions of Mod Organizer 2.5.0+ will crash with wine-ge. If you just want to play vanilla it just works, no tinkering required (apart from capping the FPS to 60 if you have a monitor with a refresh rate higher than 60 and want the physics and everything to work right but that's true for Windows too).

Simply installed and played.
There is a bit of input "sticking" or key release lag when moving, specially while crouched. It happens once in a while, but nothing that breaks the gameplay or anything, just feels weird.
Everything else works as intended, including the launcher. There is a occasional stutter/microfreeze when aproaching certain areas, but i can't tell if it's the game or due to my hardware.

No matter what I do, no matter how many reinstalls and tricks, nothing works.
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Changed the .ini settings file to allow for normal mouse movement (Like everyone here did)
Dissapointing. It worked before.

PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
Sometimes randomly quits
The "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%" command is put because i have NVSE and other mods installed.
A warning message displayed when I first launched it. I ignored and had no issues after.

New Vegas works well with vanilla, but like playing on Windows: it is recommended to follow a mod guide such as Viva New Vegas.
I'm using the Viva New Vegas guide by Ungeziefi, but I will provide what I have done to make the game work.
Firstly, run the vanilla game first to make sure the game works. You may have to play in windowed mode for the first boot. Secondly, use Rockerbacon's MO2 Linux fork and run through the steps. Thirdly, make sure you have vcrun2022 on the prefix you are using for New Vegas (either global/default or specific.) You can do that by clicking on the install a Windows DLL or component. Follow through with the guide. When you get to the utilities section for BSA Decompressor and ESM Fixes, you run the executable via Wine.
WINEPREFIX=[...] wine [...]
For the launch commends in the MO2 profile, make sure to include this:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
I believe that's everything important to note here. Viva las Vegas, baby!
Minor crackling happens regardless of vanilla or modded.
The ending of the utilities section and performance guide show how to fix alt-tabbing not working.
I would like to thank ModdingLink Discord server members Demitrix, Kontonid, Foamp, Trianta, Aristocat, and Griffin Wood for helping me. My appreciation is immeasurable.

Works out of the box, i just clicked install and that's it
I haven't tried any mods
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%

Runs incredibly well. Rarely see crashes even with mods installed. Even when it does crash, it never seems to be consistent based on an area in game, just gives up. Definitely recommend.

The launcher opens and works fine, but the play option just crashes the game.
With Proton Exerimental, I can't chose any option from the menu.
Le jeux fonctionne correctement

Stuttering. More when Vulkan shaders aren't precompiled (can take up to 1h), less when they are, but they never vanished completely.
I was only able to start the game when it was installed in the 'main partition' (the one / is on). On an otherwise mounted partition it was unable to start. The later problem might be because it was an NTFS partition, I did not test it on another ext4 partition.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Without using any extra options, the game will not detect your GPU and use llvmpipe instead, which is extremely slow. The opening cutscene is unwatchable, and once you get in the game, barely runs, even at 720p. However, after adding PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 to your launch options, it will immediately detect your GPU. Upon relaunching the game, it will autoconfigure it for you. After that, the game just works.

Works perfectly
I experienced no issues whatsoever. No stuttering, crashing or texture issues at all. Honestly in my experience it runs better on Arch than it did on Windows.
The game, like many other bethesda titles, has mouse acceleration by default. I don't think that this is Linux specific behaviour and you'd probably have to do the same on Windows, but regardless.
To turn it off, navigate to the game's data directory and add the following to Fallout_default.ini
under the Controls
section:
fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0

Works just as good on linux as it does on windows out of the box. Should be platinum tbh
Playing this with 83 mods with 0 crashes. Most ov VNV mods (including utilities like BSA compression installed via wine) and a bunch of graphical mods. 0 Tinkering. I do get occasional stutter but that also happened in windows with same frequency.

Runs better than on Windows Operating System, hands down, no word of a doubt
I see a lot of memes going around regarding the "constant crashing" of Fallout New Vegas and jokes regarding the game being an unstable mess. Since playing this game through Proton, I can count on one hand the amount of times this game has crashed on me. Managed to spend one session playing for 7 hours straight without a single crash, before eventually having to close the game due to the fact I had been playing for 7 hours straight and guilt had begun to set in. Undoubetly a much more stable experience using Proton that running on Windows. Load times are lightning fast, the on record bugs may still be present, but otherwise the game is a masterpiece, best enjoyed when loaded under Proton. No tinkering was necessary for me.
Changed "FalloutNV.exe" to "FalloutNVLauncher.exe" to avoid "not installed" problem

Crashes sometimes, but not much more than on windows

Runs out of the box. Experience is no different from Windows.
The game works about as well as it does on Windows. Stability and bugfix mods are highly recommended. Even with a massive modlist through Mod Organizer 2, the game runs flawlessly.

works on opensuse out of the box!
Again openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE Plasma 6.1+ wins!!! I had no tinkering at all, I dont know why almost everybody here writes that it must be set to dxvk fps limit to 60 while vsync is there default in the game!? Why overcomplicate simple things? I have no screen tearing, no stuttering at all, buttersmooth experience, on an NVIDIA (!!!) card with proprietary (!!) drivers - that "supposed" to be "unfriendly" with Linux per sé the community, well I see how much it is, all I see here that people with AMD cards have these issues. Also that mouse acceleration config, I dont know why peoiple keep suggesting this, my mouse works just fine, yes it truly accelerates by default while in PIP mode (just as on windows), and I got used to mouse acceleration - in fact, I couldn't live without it! People suggesting to turn it off, maybe because THEY are uncomfortable with it, but that doesn't mean that it MUST be turned off at all perhaps other people out there like me, who are perfectly comfortable with that.
also reacting to this to the person who wrote it: "You need to limit the frame rate to 60 FPS, otherwise lips will be desynced and the physics will go crazy. Proton GE is required for music to play on radios." - what lips desync are you talking about?? plese when you write reviews, at least re-read what you wrote and assure it makes sense... vsync is on by default, its not gonna stutter, unless you downloaded your nvidia drivers from nvidia's website - oh you're using arch, well that's just too sad, its way on the edge and your distro is unstable! open your eyes! also proton GE is NOT-NOT-NOT recommended at all to bother with, radio works fine as well with proton experimental (again default that steam provides)!!
Out of the box experience on my opensuse! <3

DXVK_FRAME_RATE=64 %command%
Stuttering and framedrops were fairly common w/o tinkering. With the launch option added, they were still present, but not as frequent (probably about the same as Windows).
Yes you read that right, 64fps. Not 60fps. 64fps. I experienced significant stuttering issues on Arch and was just about ready to thumb the game down on ProtonDB, until I found a thread on Steam talking about how to fix the stuttering issues: https://steamcommunity.com/app/22380/discussions/0/3182216552774269201/ And yes, this does in fact work with the DXVK_FRAME_RATE env variable, I tried it and the most annoying stuttering problems completely went away. It's not entirely smooth sailing, but it's about the same as you'd get on Windows.

Random stuttering and occasional crashes without tweaking, not anything that would make it unplayable

Occasional infinite save loading. Had to load an older save, then the most recent one.
Everything default, no mods. Experienced 1 crash in about 100 hours of playing on the Deck. Always stable 60 fps throughout the game. Sometimes loading the most recent save file right after starting the game would result in an infinite loading screen; to fix it I had to load an older save first. No other issues.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
crashes sometimes but not more than it does on windows
runs perfectly on linux, haven't tried modding though.
Works out the box however GE Proton 9-10 is required, other versions of proton didn't work for me
Works as well as a Bethesda game can

DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%
Put this lines into Fallout.ini
, FalloutPrefs.ini
and Fallout_default.ini
to fully disable mouse acceleration:
fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0
You need to limit the frame rate to 60 FPS, otherwise lips will be desynced and the physics will go crazy. Proton GE is required for music to play on radios.
