Works perfectly, but some bugs due to unlimited FPS
Unlocked refresh rates causes the directional lights to only turn in one way, which can break puzzles. Lock the refresh rate when needed to avoid this issue.
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% --launcher-skip -skipStartScreen
Very slight crackling. Might be able to iron it out with the PULSE_* env variables.
I have also tried playing with the GOG version through Lutris and the experience has been miserable. The Steam version reaches 90+FPS on my RX6950XT, but the GOG version never reached 20FPS.
The base game runs with no issues so far. I don't own any DLC (yet) and have only played for ~9 hours but so far so good!
Set resolution before launch
To successfully launch the game, I had no need to customize launch options but I needed to set the game's resolution. Upon startup, the launcher (not the game) will provide an Options/Settings menu. In the Audio/GFX submenu, I had to define my resolution. Launching the game without setting a resolution by hand resulted in a Black Screen. Don't forget to turn off the FPS cap ingame!
Borked
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
Nothing suggested in the protondb page helped. I tried ~5 different proton versions, tried a new SKSE, nothing did it. I never even saw the start menu.
Cutscenes do not play.
When the window loses focus (e.g. focus a window on my second screen), the game blacks out. It won't return to normal if I refocus it. However, if I change my current virtual desktop and go back to the game, it works.
Get a Proton version with the Media Framework, such as this one (tested to be working)
Some complex scenes with lots of overlapping textures sometimes render poorly with white flashes. This is infrequent though.
Switching away from a virtual desktop where the game runs sometimes causes the game to display a black screen when switching back to it. It is necessary to switch away from/back to it quite a few times before the issue resolves itself.
Fallout 4 runs just great on Linux. It's also possible to install F4SE and use mods (Sim Settlements, High FPS fix, etc.).
Some graphical glitches and some infinite loading screens, but nothing absolutely gamebreaking.
Hairs, light/color filters and HUD go missing after some time of gameplay, when the camera is at certain angles. Quitting the game and re-loading the save seems to do the trick. HDR makes white squares flash all over the place, so it has been disabled. NPCs lips stop moving before the audio finishes playing.
Unresponsive game, had to kill -9 quite a few times (during an infinite loading screen or after switching virtual desktops: this game must not lose focus)
Tried mf-install, but it didn't work so far (flatpak version of Steam). Bug report on its way: https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install/issues/4
Same experience as on Windows, same issues too with 1440p
KoAR does not like 1440p. Quest menu will need to be "Collapsed" before one can read the text, which is annoying, but also a known bug on Windows as well.
XBox 360 Controller was not recognized: had to Right-CLick > Properties > General > Steam Input Per-Game > Forced Off
144FPS (unsteadily though, but that's because PoE is not a monster of stability), just as many frame rate drops and crashes as on Windows. Graphics have been set to high/very high, and not a single issue arose. I'm using the Flatpak version of Steam.
Nothing to report, works out of the box, except some (few) multi "join" issues
Not Linux-related, AFAICT. On r/RiskOfRain, people also experience crashes on Windows.
After some 175 hours of game: no more issues when inviting or joining multiplayer games, it's just an absolute blast.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
NPC audio was missing, but fixed with WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b"
Crackling mostly fixed with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
Sometimes the game will black out when losing focus. It will then be impossible to return to it until it's kill(1)
ed.
A few minor glitches that a bit of googling could fix. Playing Skyrim on Linux doesn't magically fix all Skyrim bugs.
Depending on Proton version, I saw a black screen (or didn't)
Tried Proton 4.2, 4.11, 5.0 and 5.13
5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.8-GE-2-MF and https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom#flatpak
I have not tried playing with a controller
Tried many Glorious Eggroll, no game.
Tried default proton versions and (from GE) :
- Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
- Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST
- Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF
- Proton-5.21-GE-1
- Proton-6.1-GE-2
Same behavior: Click "Play", Steam window opens "Preparing to launch..." and BAM, back to Steam.
