Worked out of the box. I have a discrete GPU on my optimus laptop but I just ran it on the internal GPU.
Worked mostly ok Proton 5.13-6 with DirectX11 version. So not "install then play" quite yet.
Sometimes there's a slight lag or stutter in the gameplay. Mostly only.
I played for 2 hours or so, and it crashed once. This does NOT include the process of finding which Proton version to use. It crashed a lot when I was trying other versions.
Have to use the DirectX11 version. Ironically it crashes on the DirectX9 one on my system. (This is an option you have to select when launching).
Played for 3 minutes. Seems to work fine. Will play longer and report again.
Mouse input wasn't properly "grabbing" the mouse. If you moved outside the window, it would continue to take input.
Almost perfect. Voice over audio disappeared once or twice, but otherwise ok. And maybe that's not a proton issue.
One time a voice over played only the first bit. Then a Claptrap robot started to say something and his audio stopped as well. Then I went to the settings menu for a while. When I came back, they both started playing together at the same time. It seems to be ok since then, except I think perhaps one voice over didn't play straight away or something. But otherwise, they seem to work fine.
One time in the last 7.6 hours it froze up and lagged for a good 2 or 3 seconds. But then it jumped to where it should be (based on my input) and it was fine after that. However, this could have happened on Windows. But I don't know.
Tutorial works great (apart from videos not displaying), but I can never join matches. Fails every time.
Any kind of video/footage doesn't display properly. So the intro screen to the game is a series of "botched video" screens. And the same in the tutorial when it has videos of specific moves you're learning. Doesn't impact actual game play but it detracts from the experience slightly.
It seems like they have enabled EAC support for this game since it shows a EAC loading bar when you start the game. But as above, I can never join matches. And even got a short ban for "leaving" a match early.
It's a bit choppy since it's on high settings and I'm running this on a laptop. If you're on a higher end system I expect the performance impact wouldn't be noticeable.
Played fine. Slight screen tearing. Played full game (1.5 hours) and no issues. Didn't try exiting and returning.
Screen tearing.
Screen tearing. Slight frame drop. But that might just be the game..
No tweaks. Single player works fine (even with a steam controller) but when playing multiplayer hot seat mode, I "crash" after driving a few feet. It's very odd. I don't know if it's a proton issue or the game. Keep it in mind.
Just played one race with a steam controller. Worked fine. Didn't seem to be any issues. Hitting accelerate and the B button on my steam controller opened the task manager in KDE Plasma, so might need to change that. But the game itself seems to work fine.
Alt tabbing wouldn't always work. Alt-tabbing to some windows would work. Others wouldn't. And it wasn't consistent.
I use proton experimental but I didn't realise that was "tinkering." Fair enough. But I figure it'd probably work fine with the default. The BTS special sync is really out though. And one alt-tab made the menu flash after exiting. Otherwise, great.
I tried this several months ago and it had graphical glitches. Now it seems to work flawlessly.
Apart from crashing first launch, it seems to work fine. Connected only one phone controller. Haven't tried with any other controller types.
Crashes on first launch but then works fine.
Works out of the box once the Esync tweak is on. Before that I got music loops. The keyboard controls work fine, but I wanted my steam controller set. You can do that manually inside and then in big picture overlay use the gamepad default so that it acts like an xbox controller.
With launch options set to "primusrun %command%" I'm getting basically perfect gameplay. Once or twice the screen froze for about 5 seconds. But continued on without issue.
Everything works fine with Proton 4.2-9 (yes there are some slight freezes in cut scenes but otherwise it's alright. I tried it again recently with the latest version (4.11-2 as of writing), and multiplayer with two Steam Controllers DOES NOT WORK. It wouldn't detect the second steam controller. With 4.2-9 it worked straight away, but the update has messed stuff up. Not an issue though. Just set it to run with 4.2-9 and you're good to go. Of course, if you're playing single player then it shouldn't be necessary, but who knows?
Optimus laptop so added primusrun to beginning of command.
Dunno if it's necessary but I did this as well: PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1
Then edited the DefaultEngine.ini file. Added: DeviceName=Generic Software UseEffectsProcessing=False
MAKE SURE you have the space between Generic & Software. Won't work otherwise.
If you want it in 1080p, in the same file, DefaultEngine.ini: find the section titled: [WinDrv.WindowsClient] And changed the started up resolution for x and y to be 1920 and 1080 respectively. Seems to make it a bit grainy.
My launch options (I have optimus, so ignore the primusrun unless you have a discrete GPU): PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 primusrun %command%
---- With the tweaks listed in other reports: Look for DefaultEngine.ini file (in .steam/steam/steamapps/common/Mass Effect/BioGame/Config/), open it and look for [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice] section. Add:
DeviceName=Generic Software
and then
UseEffectsProcessing=False
----- Make sure there is a space between "Generic" and "Software."
If you want to up the resolution you'll find the startup resolution x and y in the same file. (The game is meant to look grainy. You can turn it off in the settings).
Save and restart the game.
There is a game breaking issue (at least for me) if you play the native version. During conversations with people, there are words in their dialogue that you can type out. But they are completely blank when using the native version! I thought it was a guessing mechanic but then I tried the windows version with proton, and now I can see and type the words in their dialogue.
Also, the native version doesn't handle ultrawide monitors properly. If I run it fullscreen at 2560x1440, it STRETCHES the interface instead of inserting black bars on the sides. You don't notice it until you've seen what it's supposed to look like (using the windows version with proton). (and yeah I haven't seen the cutscenes in the proton version 'cause I continued my save game after switching over to the proton one. DO NOTE that if you switch over you might lose some progress. I got set back several checkpoints in my save game when I switched from the native version to the proton version.
Seems to work perfectly.
It acted like I'd never played the game before ("since this is your first race"), but I have on Windows. This isn't the sort of game where you would really care, though.
I didn't actually play with multiple people for the multiplayer local. But I tried connecting my android browser and controlling my player via that, and it worked great (I mean, as great as their implementation allows), so I can't see why it wouldn't work with another connected.
AMD 6900xt. Doesn't load then says the GPU doesn't support the features required.
Maybe it works on Nvidia GPUs?
Playable, but textures are basically gone, and your player model is permanently bobbing into view. It's disturbing.
env RADV_PERFTEST=rt %command%
Player model is inside field of vision and it ain't pretty.
A lot of the emails/notes were a bit small. It's ok for my eyesight, but I did notice I was holding the steam deck closer to my face.
Really good value on the Steam Deck. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
At first I had launch options set to "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 DXVK_HUD=fps primusrun %command%" But I found works just as well with launch options set to just "primusrun %command%".
Seems to work pretty well. Maybe better than the native one.
Didn't properly go full screen until I alt tabbed out and in again.
Native version kept crashing instantly. Am still testing the proton one but it seems to be more stable and loads faster than the native one. Will make another report after doing more online testing.
Even without the NPC audio, you could definitely enjoy the game with subtitles. But it might be a deal breaker for you.
Audio for NPCs isn't there.
Didn't test subtitles. Not sure if they are working.
Fixed by setting this for custom command: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
Worked fine with almost no issues. And this game is so querky you probably wouldn't even think it was an error. (I'm actually not sure which
One time when I booted the game, it didn't show me the mouse when I tried to set the clock.
When I got to the ending where you find the fake (android) wife and just have to press buttons to continue the narration. The prompts did not show up on the screen so I had to just randomly hit keys until I could find it. I looked it up on youtube and it seemed there was supposed to be text on screen. Dunno if this is a proton problem.
