Runs, but Looks Terrible
For some reason changing the graphics settings from default (low) to medium, high, or ultra, the graphics don't actually change and remain blurry.
I'm not entirely sure what is going on, but the game launches ana proceeds to throw an error/notice stating that my graphics driver could not be detected or is outdated.
When attempting to change the graphic settings in-game and restarting, the game proceeds to continue being blurry as if at a very low resolution. Looking at the graphic settings after the restart shows an error/caution icon next to each setting. Hovering over the icon provides a description saying I should revert back to the default (low) settings. I've tried multiple settings, but to no avail.
Perhaps I have missed an important detail somewhere, but I will provide an update if I find a fix.
Works Perfectly Fine, but Slight Issue at the Moment
Could not load into a singleplayer game due to connection to local host being lost. To resolve this simply go offline on Steam and then singleplayer worked normally.
As I say in the "Bugs" portion, for some reason while you're online on Steam the singleplayer just won't load the game. I'm not smart enough in Linux to be able to figure out what the exact issue is, but it is capable of being fixed by simply going offline.
Otherwise, game works great.
I haven't had any issues attempting to or while playing the game. I initially tried playing with Glorious Eggroll's GE-Proton7-10 version, but it kept crashing at the cutscene right after Sam, Igor and the truck get caught by the BTs while trying to deliver the corpse to the incinerator. Once I switched to Proton Experimental I have had no issues, proceeding to play for multiple hours afterwards.
For some reason some enemies are invisible. You can lock-on, damage, receive damage, etc, but the character is just not visible. Sometimes they will fade in and out of existence. Sometimes they ARE there, then fade away when you get closer.
So I had to take a few steps to get this working and thankfully there was a Reddit post providing such information.
- Make sure Proton Experimental is up to date.
- Make sure you are running Steam Runtime
- To check if you are on Steam Runtime or Native Runtime:
- Open Steam and click on "Help" drop-down in top bar.
- Click on "System Information".
- Scroll down a little bit to "Operating System Version:" and you will see what Steam runtime version you are running (I'm currently running version 0.20220119.0)
- In your Library select "Tools" in the "Games, Software, Videos, etc" drop-down.
- In the search bar search "Proton" and install "Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime".
- Make sure Elden Ring is set to run via Proton Experimental
- Launch Game.
Hopefully I remembered this step-by-step process correctly and this will help you play Elden Ring online. Also, I should note that I have tried both normal Proton Experimental and Proton Experimental with Bleeding Edge Beta. Both worked.
If you wish to play with a gamepad:
- Click "Steam" and then "Settings" from dropdown.
- Choose "Controller" tab and click on Desktop Configuration.
- At the bottom of the new opened window click Browse Configs.
- Choose "Templates" from the left options.
- Select "Gamepad" or whatever else suits your needs.
A rainbow of artifacts covering the entire screen.
You can launch the game, but as soon as you get past the initial splash screen everything on the screen is a giant rainbow. You can see the Main Menu icons and start a game and move on to the character creation menus and they work fine, but once you get into the game the rainbow artifacts return. I've tested with GE Proton7-10 to GE Proton7-14, Proton Experimental, Proton Experimental [bleeding-edge], Proton 7.0-1 and Proton 6.3-8. All having the same issues.
Only 4 reviews two years old, decided to test. Runs flawlessly with Proton Experimental now!
Zero Issues On My End
Flawless
Game ran perfectly. I didn't experience any problems with stability, graphics, audio, or gameplay in Singleplayer and Multiplayer.
Just Don't Go Into Fullscreen
When I initially switched from Borderless to Fullscreen, the game was fine. After closing the game, the game would not start up again while Fullscreen was still enabled in the settings. To fix this, go to:
steamapps/compatdata/553850/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Arrowhead/Helldivers2
Open "user_settings.config", find "fullscreen" and set to false; find borderless_fullscreen" and set to true. This should fix the issue.
The game works pretty very well. My main issues are:
- Can't Play in Fullscreen
- White line bordering the entire edge of the screen while in Borderless Fullscreen.
The game is simply not ready for Linux users, but it does launch and play.
3 FPS even at lowest settings
Loading screens didn't have images, but white noise and colored bars. Not sure if this is actually intentional or not. Tried using Glorious Eggroll's 6.21-GE-2 after using Proton Experimental and 6.3-8, but game wouldn't launch like the latter two.
Proton 7.0-1 Works, but getting the game to run smoothly and set at a visually satisfying point is a pain.
Switching between Windowed and Fullscreen would sometimes Offset the buttons in menus. For example: Back button in options menu is very visibly in the bottom right corner. After switching between modes it is still there, but you have to wave the cursor off to the side a few inches and up a tad bit to find where the "button" is supposedly located. Essentially it's a ghost button you have to find. Game restart fixes this.
Unexpectedly Low FPS
My biggest issue with this game is you have to restart it to enable at least half of the settings if they are changed. The game itself immediately runs poorly and I had to do A LOT of changes to the settings to get the game running decently.
- As an Ultrawide user I first had to drop resolution to 2560x1080.
- Secondly, I dropped most settings to Low. The most important setting for me was setting Shadow Filter Method to PCF. This resolved the extremely grainy details.
- After all that I was able to incrementally increase other settings to High to get to the visual experience that you would expect.
Unfortunately, I had far fewer issues playing the game on Windows 10. If you can fight through all of these issues and adjust your settings, you can get the game running the way you want.
No Problems Here
Keybinds. Haven't tested on Windows, so I can't be completely sure if it is only a Linux issue, but any time I close the game, upon next launch, all my keybinds have been reset. Not a huge issue, but definitely an annoying one.
Otherwise, haven't had any issues whatsoever.
Works great with latest Proton (v. 7.0-1)
Game is working phenomenally even while running a multitude of mods. Haven't had a chance to test multiplayer yet, hopefully I can pull some compadres together to see if it does.
In game launch settings, put: "%command% -noprompt -anygpu" to resolve "Unsupported Video Card Detected" (without quotations).
First Attempt: game froze in splash screen after match while in Fullscreen, all other programs and desktop became inaccessible.
Trouble getting past the first initial splash screens on start-up. Receive "Unexpected Error" and game freezes.
Using GloriousEggroll's version of Proton solved all issues I previously had. Game runs great.
Proton-6.19-GE-2 by GloriousEggroll
%command% -noprompt -anygpu
Multiplayer works perfectly fine aside from maybe a random FPS drop here and there, but not enough to make a huge difference.
Tried previous Proton versions as well as the new Proton 7.0-1 and all seem to crash either at Main Menu or right after a Multiplayer match. GE is the only one that works
It works with Proton Experimental.
There was a lot of stuttering for periods of time, then it'd run smooth, then it would be a persistent stutter until restarting the game.
The stuttering issues I was experiencing could just be the game itself - an alpha - or possibly my hardware. Who really knows. Maybe just need to fiddle with graphics settings some more or drop resolution to 1920 from 3440.
mangohud %command%
Game runs perfectly fine and I've been playing consistently for 4+ hours at the time of this report with no issues to speak of.
It Works
I don't have much time in the game, but I did test both Proton 7.0-6 and Glorious Eggroll version GE-Proton7-41 and they both worked.
Also, as a benchmark, I played the game shortly in Windows to get a feel for it and I can say that both Windows and Proton played pretty much the same, but moreso on the linux end I had a few more stuttering situations than I did in Windows. As the game just released into Early Access, performace is needing some tweaking from the developer, but so far it's not bad at all and runs quite well.
Fortunately, I have some friends who have purchased the game, so I will be able to test out the multiplayer soon and will provide an updated log going over my multiplayer experience.
Works Perfectly Fine
Launched perfectly fine after installation. Running Proton 7.0-3 with zero issues.
Zero Problems
This is a simple update to my last entry. After having fully played through the game - 26 hours in - I have yet to come across any issues while playing on Proton 7.0-3
I seemed to be missing some textures in the Character Creation menu. Some of the numbers in the appearance menu were gone, but clickable; and the head of my character in the bottom right was completely blacked out, so actually seeing your changes was impossible.
-- aside from not being able to edit my character. Tested in Proton Experimental, Proton 7.0-1, and Proton 6.3-8; all worked.
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%
Just a quick note, when you do launch the game the first menu to appear will be black and look as though it is frozen. Just press Enter on your keyboard and the rest of the process will continue.
So here's the process to making the game work:
In the "Launch Options" within Properties / General, copy/paste the above command line.
For me, I initially launched the game and proceeded to do the rest of the installation within the Elder Scrolls Launcher without the "Launch Options", and it would say I did not have enough space on my drive to continue its installation. This may be due to me having the game installed on a seperate drive from the actual Steam Directory. After I pasted the "Launch Options" in its respective spot, the available disk space corrected itself and I was able to finish installation in the launcher.
And that should be it. I am running the game on Proton Experimental and it's perfectly fine.
Running well on Proton Experimental, minus the audio sync.
Audio from a character speaking was ahead by 1-2 seconds.
A little bit of stuttering here and there, but not enough to cause issue.
Game Runs Fine in Proton 7.0-1
Alt+Tabbing can cause a crash, Alt+Tabbing back into game can cause significant fps drop (have fixed by repeated alt+tabbing), game froze when moving a unit on Campaign map (once).
There is an apparent problem with the Campaign Map causing GPUs to increase exponentially in temperature.
Multiplayer stability is spotty when playing with multiple people (my case: 6 people). This is probably an ISP/VPN-usage issue rather than the game itself.
If on ultrawide, avoid 3440x1440. Massive FPS drop on Campaign Map. 2560x1080 is slightly blurry, but far better performance.

Multiplayer worked just as well as it does in Windows.
Initially, the game does not work out of the box. You need to follow all the steps provided in this Reddit post
https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkTide/comments/y49vcz/guide_to_playing_darktide_beta_on_linux/
and then the game will run without any hiccups. There may be some issues in-game such as stuttering and fps drops, so I'd suggest lowering a couple of your settings (specifically Volumetric Fog), but otherwise the game ran pretty good aside from in-game menus taking a few seconds to pop up here and there.
I noticed some minor stuttering in cinematics, and only periodically here and there.
Multiplayer was perfectly fine
I have not tried using Proton Experimental or Proton 7.0-4. Having played the closed beta, I revisited a previous Reddit thread that helped me get the closed beta to work - here: r/Darktide - to happily see they updated their post to say the game "Just Works" without any of the previous fixes needing to be done.
And they are correct. I launched the game with zero issues. Cinematics work, multiplayer works; everything just works. You may have to lower some settings here and there depending on your rig, but I'm currently at max settings only ever so slightly having some stuttering every now and then.
Multiplayer worked very well, no crashes after many-houred sessions, still have to be the Host to play with other players.
After much trial and error from following multiple instructions from other contributers, I decided to do the simplest of options I've gathered from looking at reddit threads as well as this contributer thread. At the end of the process, the game ran perfectly fine on the Official Realm; zero crashes, zero stabilty issues, zero graphical issues, and in-game I was able to Craft and collect Spoils. Though, you still MUST be the host to be able to play with other players.
- Install game.
- Switch compatibility to Proton Experimental (not bleeding-edge).
- Visit your
/steamapps/compatdata/
folder and delete folder "552500". - Verify the integrity of the game files.
- Run the game and allow the pre-launch installations to proceed.
- An error message will pop up. Simply close it.
- After closing the error message, the Microsoft Edge Webview will begin to download. Let it. It should finish and immediately begin to install it. This will inevitably fail. And that is fine. Close it after the failure.
- The game should then open up the Vermintide Launcher and in it will be the "Play" button and you should be able to click on it. Afterwards, the game will launch. If the launcher does not appear, simply relaunch the game.
This is the entire process that I followed and had zero issues other than needing to adjust my video settings in-game. I did not use any commands in the command line, I did not use any launcher workarounds, and I did not delete or rename the file MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup.exe
.
I hope that following this process works as well for you as it did for me.
Runs Very Well
I think the issue just boil down to the game just released and still needs some optimization. Experienced FPS in the mid 20's at least half of my multiplayer session.
Other than the game still needing some optimization here and there for Multiplayer, the game ran perfect. I have not experienced any bugs in my decent time of playing thus far.
