Once the proper settings were selected, game launched and ran perfectly. No stuttering or lag. Possibly better performance than windows.
Had to turn off reflections to be able to run on ultra graphic settings. Otherwise, game was very dark, blurry, and had a green night-vision effect. Once reflections were turned off, game ran flawlessly. Had to launch game from steam, selecting "Show Game Launcher," then select GLCore from the video settings. Otherwise game would not launch.
Despite what my stats say, i was using the Nvidia 440 driver version
5.8-GE-2-MF Glorious Eggroll GloriousEggroll
Install game using Glorious eggroll. Instructions and files found here: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases
Got to $HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag/ and create a text file titled "dxvk.conf" (without quotes). Open the file and add the line "d3d11.maxFeatureLevel = 10_1" (without the quotes). Save and close the file.
Disable steam overlay for this game if you have not done so already.
Launch the game from steam. Make sure you have the CD key handy because you will be asked for it.
Once the Uplay launcher has loaded, go into its settings and disable the Uplay overlay. You will probably have to exit the launcher/game and relaunch after this step. I actually had to hard reset my computer after this step.
Relaunch the game from steam. Once the Uplay launcher comes back, it will warn you that you're about to launch without the overlay. Tell it you're okay with that.
Enter game CD key when prompted.
Should run fine after that.
Would not launch
I didn't try any of the launch options others have used. Installed using Proton 5.0.9. When launching the first time, it went through the usual first time setup then, nothing. I had to use system monitor to kill the process. Will try again in a few months.
No tweaks; games runs perfect. Multiplayer is buggy
Game runs just fine for solo play. No noticeable difference from windows. Multiplayer is buggy. In MP, game locked on a frozen logo if I tried to skip splash screens. Was able to force close game by ctrl+alt+del and then right clicking on game icon in taskbar and selecting close game. Alt+tab would not allow that. Managed to get past that on one attempt and get to the MP menu and selected a server. Game downloaded resources from server, then locked on a black screen. Had to hard reset PC. Testing stopped. Maybe someone can figure it out.
Runs like native.
Just a little bit of crackling on the menu. Nothing major.
No issues of any kind playing the game. It is good to go. Only note is that I had to use Proton 5.0-10 to run it. Would not run with newer versions of Proton.
No tweaks. Installed fine, no errors. Game runs and plays flawlessly so far. Maybe 2-3 hours of gameplay.
New Social Club Launcher installed fine. You have to jump through a few hoops when launching for the first time though. Single-player game launched perfectly; I ran around, drove a little, jumped, shot some people. No issues. Attempted to launch Online from in story mode. Game crashed. Attempted to launch online from steam. A box with the R logo launched, logo continues to animate, but game does not launch. Let it run for 10 minutes, no change. Tried both 'WINEDLLOVERRIDES=winedbg.exe=d PROTON_USE_WINED3D10=1 %command%' and WINEDLLOVERRIDES=winedbg.exe=d %command% Online does not launch, same result as described.
Game and Social Club installed no problem. Social Club launches. Does not list GTAV in Lib. Steam does not launch GTAV
Once I got it running, it ran just fine. Load times are a bit excessive, but if I recall, it was the same way on windows.
Install/Update Vulkan, make sure to install the repositories for either Nvidia or MESA, depending on your graphic driver. Install through steam, don't let it launch the rockstar launcher after install, launch game from steam. I removed the WINEDLOVERIDE launch option in steam from previous attempts to make it work and suddenly it started launching fine.
Sound stopped after just shy of 2hrs gameplay
Game crashed after a little more than 2hrs gameplay
Could not launch directly to online. had to launch story mode then go into online
As previously noted: Install game using latest version of proton. Don't let it launch rockstar launcher after install. Clear out any launch options you have set in steam. If it doesn't work, you can try those later. Install or update Vulkan and get the latest video drivers. Do this even if you know Vulkan is installed and updated, just to be sure. Make sure Vulkan is recognizing your video card. I have an Nvidia card but during this process, i accidentally also installed the MESA repository for Vulkan. I include that note just in case, for some crazy reason, that helped make it work. launch Story mode through Steam. From there, if it is working, you should be able to also go into online mode. It started in a small window. I made it fullscreen window in story mode with no problem. In online mode I attempted to make it true fullscreen and it crashed. Relaunched story, made it true full screen no problem, launched online and was able to play as if it was running on windows. Lost audio after maybe 110 minutes of play. Game crashed after about 150 minutes. No further tests between that and this report.
Controller can be buggy. For example, selecting mines and placing them; instead of placing a 2nd one, it would detonate the first.
Lags when too many explosions on screen. Cutscenes lag slightly, but not a big deal
Installed with no launch options or anything fancy. Once game launches, it is unresponsive on main menu, I have to alt-tab in and out once to jog it loose so the menu shows. If the game is running but unresponsive try that. Lags pretty hard with multiple on-screen explosions but handles large fire fights and long flights no problem. Slight lag during cut scenes; noticeable but not jarring. Keyboard and mouse work fine but controller (x-box) feels clunky; I don't know how to explain it. Maybe you'll have better luck with it. Overall, very playable.
Installed using latest version of proton 5.0.x
Launching can take a while. When it launches, the icon for the game will appear in the task bar. i then have to alt-tab to it. Game shows as a black rectangle in the upper left if the screen. Sometimes I wait and it goes into the game fine, sometimes I have to hit "enter" before the game will fully launch. Otherwise, it works just like it does on windows. Stable, smooth, plays well.
Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Occasional flashing texture, similar to buggy Flash games. Happened twice in entire testing play. Barely noticeable.
Windowed Full-Screen; first time attempting it, the game crashed. Did not re-launch on first try. Did on 2nd. Windowed Full-Screen functions properly after that.
Do not expect to be able to link your old account to steam. It requires a browser to launch, which did not work for me. Made 6 attempts, game locked on 2 of them and had to be restarted.
It does not like Linux, but will work. Takes a long time to launch the first time and it may lock up or crash while fiddling with graphic settings or account linking. After that though, I launched, played for 10 minutes, closed, re-launched. Did this 5 times with no further issues.
All I had to do was pick the proton version. No other tweaks or anything. Game launches and plays just like you expect it to.
Installs and runs perfectly. I was even able to add mods. Practically a native game.
Runs perfect native
All I did was install and hit play. Been playing for months with many multi-hour sessions completed with no issues. you know how this game is, you start playing and 6 hours go by. No crashes, no glitches or bugs, no slow downs.
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
hands or held items flash a solid color. When looking around, occasional gaps can be seen between terrain sections or between buildings and terrain. All glitches are very quick and would be playable if not for the crashing
Game crashes after 5-7 minutes of play. Does not seem to be dependent on anything like moving between cells, number of actors or items rendered, entering or exiting locations.
Game installs and launches just fine. Character creation works, graphic issues listed above. Game plays smoothly with no audio issues. As stated previously, game crashes to desktop after a short time of play. I have tried both with and without mods, with and without SKSE. Crash does not seem to be repeatable, it just happens when it wants to.
