Like others, I needed to rename AoK HD.exe to Launcher.exe to get it to run (making the latter a symbolic link to the former unfortunately didn't work). Once I did, however, it ran fine out of the box, including all three expansions The Forgotten, The African Kingdoms, and Rise of the Rajas. One minor issue is text in the chat box flickering, but this didn't really affect anything while playing.
I followed the instructions from this Reddit post (which people have listed in other reports): https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamPlay/comments/dysg89/age_of_empires_ii_definitive_edition_now_working/
After I'd tabbed out with Alt-Tab a few times the game seemed to think my mouse was permanently in the top left corner of the screen and kept scrolling the map in that direction. I had to restart the game to fix it, though I don't know if it's simply because I had my mouse in that corner when I tabbed out or not. Other than that, no problems.
I've only only noticed it with UI elements, and not in such a way as to affect the gameplay. For instance, switching between civilizations in the technology tree takes a second or two, and selecting the map to play on takes a few seconds as it opens the new graphical map previewer, as does selecting various things such as trigger effects in the scenario editor. In actual gameplay I haven't noticed anything.
The new Art of War campaign doesn't work with the tweaks I used, and trying to access it caused the game to freeze and my cursor to disappear.
I used 'protontricks 105450 mfc42 winxp l3codecx'.
Tabbing out during the opening movies causes the game to freeze upon tabbing back in. Once the movies have finished (or been skipped), tabbing out seems to be fine.
The game starts and run fine, though there are some graphical glitches where it looks like shaders aren't working properly in a few places (most noticeable in one of the rivers near Lyndow, and in the sun). A shame in a game about making pretty pictures, but it works fine other than that.
Silently closes upon starting.
Trying different versions of Proton and the Steam Linux Runtime did nothing.
The missing music is mildly annoying (unless you're the type of person to play without it anyway), but the game runs fine otherwise.
Music doesn't play. Other than that audio seems fine.
The main menu often has an incorrect resolution upon start-up, but it fixes itself when you go to the campaign or otherwise enter a run.
Ran perfectly for me. Definitely need a beefy computer for all the physics simulations, though.
Starts and runs without needing to tweak anything, but won't run at full screen. Other than that I haven't encountered any issues so far.
Game crashed immediately with "a C++ error", but continued running according to Steam. It also left some zombie processes in the background. Disabling esync and DXVK didn't change anything. Playing around with different versions of Proton also had no effect.
Needs the beta branch of Proton 5.0-8 or a custom fork at the moment, but works quite well with it.
The game always starts in windowed, no matter if quit in fullscreen or windowless; however, switching to one of the latter two fixes it. It also crashed once upon Alt-Tabbing out.
The control issues make it literally unplayable. The missing audio is annoying, but wouldn't actually impact the gameplay.
Audio wouldn't play during movies. Seemed to be fine everywhere else, from the very limited time I experienced it.
The game acts in some segments as if I'm holding down a button---for instance, it wouldn't allow me to select another racer, and mad a noise as if I were constantly hammering the button to select the previous racer while already having Anakin selected ("left"). Upon starting a race, it acted as if I were constantly holding down the "turn left" key (as well as rolling my podracer on its left side for some reason). Then, upon hitting Escape to get to the menu, I couldn't actually select any other option than "Continue", so I had to quit the game with Alt-F4.
Missing audio in videos, but otherwise runs fine (though make sure to disable joystick if you're not using it).
Audio missing in videos, though seems fine everywhere else.
Minor issues with the draw distance in the courses with things being visible through walls briefly, though nothing affecting the gameplay that I've seen.
I was having a severe problem that made the game unplayable, with it seeming like the game was constantly holding down the "up" and "left" keys both in menus and in gameplay. I went to the settings menu and disabled using the joystick, and that fixed it.
Game starts, but no graphics visible
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Without "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" in the launch options the game opens a black window for a split second then immediatley closes. With it, I can hear the opening movie playing (the game runs fine on my Steam Deck so I can tell), and the game seems to get to the main menu if I hit Escape, but it just shows a black screen.
Runs basically perfectly with no tinkering needed.
There's a very short video at the start of a new game which didn't show up (though it's not vital and audio worked), otherwise everything seems to work perfectly fine in singleplayer as far as I can tell. (I have yet to try multiplayer.)
The game runs fine in the little over an hour I played it (with keyboard and mouse). I've only noticed two issues so far: some minor graphical glitching/stuttering in one particular area in the background of one of the levels which had no impact on gameplay, and, bizarrely, no visible text showing when I watch the credits.
Works fine 'out-of-the-box'
One minor bug -- which I've never seen before -- is that achievements aren't firing (there's one for handling your first customer which over 80% of people have, so I'm pretty certain I should at least have that one after several in-game days). Everything else about the game has worked perfectly, though.
Worked perfectly for me. It was slightly slow and stutter-y for the first ~10 seconds of the intro (compiling shaders perhaps?, but has been fine ever since.
The game started fine, but ran at about 9−10 FPS for me, and randomly crashed after the first 9 minutes. The developer has stated there's supposed to be a native version soon, it's just been delayed due to some significant problems discovered while testing.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Feels like the performance is slightly weak, but it's early access so that get optimized over time. It's not a huge deal for a grand strategy game, and in terms of stability it's been rock-solid, with no bugs that I've found in almost 30 hours of playing.
