WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound,dinput=n,b" %command%
To make the sound work in cutscenes, you need to place a certain version of dsound.dll in the game folder: version 6.2.9200.16384 - 32 Bit (x86). The game will not accept any other version! You cannot install this version via Protontricks, so you need to download the file of this version separately.
To run the game I had to do the following:
- Click "PLAY" and first select the settings, and in the window that appears, your screen resolution.
- Then download the file dinput.dll from here: https://github.com/elishacloud/dinputto8/releases
- Then download dsound.dll version 6.2.9200.16384 - 32 Bit (x86) anywhere on the Internet. I got it from here: https://www.dlldownloader.com/dsound-dll/ If you want to check that you downloaded the correct version, then the MD5 sum for the version suitable for this game is: a97542f6c1b3c99e739e6d2a79c1e1a3
- Place the downloaded files dinput.dll and dsound.dll in the game folder.
- In the game properties in Steam, you must specify the following launch parameter: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound, dinput=n,b" %command%
- That's it! You can launch the game - now there will be sound in the opening videos.

No cutscene audio
Occasional track flickering

I've completed the game using Proton 9.0-2 without major issues
Videos don't play audio
I have a better experience setting the game resolution to 1440x960 to avoid elements with wrong positions on the screen (my display device is 1080p). The only minor problem I've seen is the videos without audio.
Runs great with zero issues!

Out of the box working
No cutscene audio
Except the audio which does not play in the cutscenes, the game itself worked out of the box

Use the steam community layout CREEPIOS comfort layout for steam deck from creepio🤩😇

Works after tinkering with dsound.dll workaround and when switching between desktoop and game mode.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command%
Find dsound.dll with md5sum a97542f6c1b3c99e739e6d2a79c1e1a3 and copy in game folder and set WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command% as launch options to get sound everywhere.
Need to start graphic settings launcher when switching between game mode and desktop mode

Just make sure you find the right control layout, and you'll enjoy it other than the missing cutscenes audio
Controls
Cutscene audio is missing
Works but no audio for cutscenes
Ran fine with no issues other than no audio for cutscenes that play before the start of each race.
Cutscenes have no sound.
In order to play it is necessary to start "Launch Display Settings" and change the resolution in gaming mode (it did not allow changing it in desktop mode), once this is done launch the game with "play STAR WARS Episode 1 Racer" .

Cutscene audio is missing, other audio works like normal.
The game runs perfectly fine (I haven't tried multiplayer since no one I know owns this game, or even knows about it) out of the box, and almost everything is normal. As my report mentions, the audio from the cutscenes does not play. Aside from that, it works.
Changed left thumbstick to arrow keys
You need to set the resolution in the starting config window. Needed a mouse to click the buttons.
Audio missing from cutscenes
Audio is missing in cutscenes
runs pretty much perfectly OOTB
on alt tab, game goes totally black and you have to restart it
Audio in pre-rendered cutscenes is missing. In game sounds are all good.
You have 2 mouse cursors one from the game and your hardware cursor. However the position of those is not in sync. I recommend playing with game pad anyway works very well!
A fun stroll down memory lane
Cut scene audio is not present

Had to disable the steam overlay to get the game to work with a good fps.
It's playable and beatable but there are some minor issues
Audio is missing from cutscenes
Crashed twice during my playthrough.
Steam will not launch game

I got this game through GOG and the GameHub Launcher installs and launches it perfectly without any need for intervention or patching.
Video cutscenes are muted, which is lame but it's not gamebreaking.
Some sprites have transparency problems, some normals are kinda funky which means you can see through some walls. But when I say "some" I mean less than a handful, most of the game looks perfect. These problems may happen on Windows as well for all I know.
The problems I list don't affect the gameplay in any way, the game is enjoyable and runs perfectly.
No music during intro and in race selection (maybe normal, never played the game on any other platform)
I'm not playing on a high-end system
Great game bringing back nostalgia to when i was 9 years old just having first watched star wars. brilliant experience
missing audio in cutscenes
few artefacts during rendering
Worked better than my old windows pc because proton didnt get bogged down by a game breaking error where the screen would never render during races

Works great out of the box
No sound for video scenes, otherwise works fine ingame.
Some minor freezes during the game.
Tested with Logitech F310 gamepad (no config needed)

Works great out of the box with Logitech F310 gamepad.
No sound for the intro video, otherwise sound works fine in the game.

Proton 4.11: Beautiful compatibility, just lacking audio in cut scenes.
Audio doesn't play in cut scenes. Works everywhere else.
It will crash on startup with either my Xbox One or Steam Controller connected (It interestingly recognizes them and creates profiles for them, though). However, I own a Logitech Wingman Extreme from the late 90's, It works like a dream with Racer. I believe this has to do with the extra axis' on new controllers. My Wingman has X, Y, Z, and RX, positive and negative for all.
My conclusion: You can only use joysticks/controllers that the game itself supports. This is typical of older titles.
Missing audio in videos, but otherwise runs fine (though make sure to disable joystick if you're not using it).
Audio missing in videos, though seems fine everywhere else.
Minor issues with the draw distance in the courses with things being visible through walls briefly, though nothing affecting the gameplay that I've seen.
I was having a severe problem that made the game unplayable, with it seeming like the game was constantly holding down the "up" and "left" keys both in menus and in gameplay. I went to the settings menu and disabled using the joystick, and that fixed it.
The control issues make it literally unplayable. The missing audio is annoying, but wouldn't actually impact the gameplay.
Audio wouldn't play during movies. Seemed to be fine everywhere else, from the very limited time I experienced it.
The game acts in some segments as if I'm holding down a button---for instance, it wouldn't allow me to select another racer, and mad a noise as if I were constantly hammering the button to select the previous racer while already having Anakin selected ("left"). Upon starting a race, it acted as if I were constantly holding down the "turn left" key (as well as rolling my podracer on its left side for some reason). Then, upon hitting Escape to get to the menu, I couldn't actually select any other option than "Continue", so I had to quit the game with Alt-F4.

The game starts up only with my xbox controller disconnected. If I use alt tab in the game it goes to a black screen and I have to restart it. The intro video plays but has no sound. Also the configuration tool does not start up.

Game crashes with connected controller. But it works without, seems to be an OpenGL game.

Runs great after unplugging controller. Playing with keyboard sucks though :(

Doesn't launch with controller plugged in. Can't get controller to work in-game. Otherwise, works perfectly at 1440p!

If an Xbox controller is plugged in it wont start

Runs fine and even has Steam cloud support? Anyway after a few races no issues although the game is so old it does not seem to be configurable for higher resolutions though.

Alt-tabbing crashes the game to a black screen. There is no sound during the cutscenes and there are various minor graphical glitches with shadows and particle effects.

Singleplayer works flawlessly out of the box, even with controller. As for multiplayer, the required IPX protocol is not supported on most Linux distributions, including the IPX Wrapper that is already provided by Valve ("Error opening IPX socket"). This prevents any form of multiplayer play.

Sound doesn't play during track intro videos. There are various small graphical issues like flashing surfaces and the street lights on the Malastare 100 track being messed up but the game is completely playable.
