Vsync seems to be limited to 78 fps in my testing; use an external frame limiter to push to your monitors refresh rate if higher. Otherwise, have fun and good luck returning to your world!
Tweaks for increased frame limit and better frame pacing (in your prefix: My Documents/My Games/Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/Config/AliceEngine.ini
)
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=62
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=122
Basically MinSmoothedFrameRate = 1/2 * FPS + 2
and MaxSmoothedFrameRate = FPS + 2`
Make sure to use Steam Input if using Sony controllers, as AMR doesn't support anything but XBOX gamepads.
When certain characters are rendered on screen, such as the Cheshire Cat, I experienced some noticable slowdown ranging from 10-15 reduced fps to almost 100-105 reduced fps! Luckily, this goes away after the character stops rendering, and the majority of the game is unaffected (so far in my gameplay, at least).
It's possible to integrate DLC content and the original American McGee's Alice (Alice1) into AMR. Look for instructions from other ProtonDB contributors/look it up online.
Ruined by recent inclusion of kernel-level anticheat
MANGOHUD=1 gamemoderun %command%
Not much else to say. Worked perfectly fine, with performance expected from my hardware. Now the game is unplayable on Linux systems thanks to this new cheating "countermeasure".
Terrible stuttering and choppiness make the game uncomfortable and difficult to play.
Also tried gamemode, but this didn't seem to fix any of my problems.
Clean prefix seems to have fixed previous non-shader stutters. Game runs smoothly for the most part.
Disabled Esync as per other reports, and also used Feral's gamemode. Both seemed to help with performance, although I'm not so sure about shaders.
This game has god-awful shader lag, as in, delays of seconds. I can't explain why this is, but be on the lookout for this lag! After a while of playing, it should sort itself out.
As suggested, installed dotnet 472:
protontricks 359320 -q dotnet472 win7
.
Make sure you have tried to launch the game at least once, and have protontricks set up before getting dotnet.
Sound engine will occasionally stop and then resume. No idea what causes it, but something to look out for.
Experienced some temporary freezing when exiting supercruise to a rescue ship, but nothing besides that.
Installing dotnet will take a considerable amount of time. ~20-30 minutes in my case.
Installed the Lua menu, as the default HTML menu was very delayed and finicky to use. https://github.com/robotboy655/gmod-lua-menu
I enabled the "x86-64 (Chromium + 64-bit binaries)" beta for this game, as I got improved performance at the cost of slightly lowered stability.
Launch options that I cobbled together from a variety of sources: gamemoderun PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% -width 1920 -height 1080 -nomemrestrict -norestrictions -percentvidmem 100 -availablevidmem 4096 -noprecache -novblank -heapsize 2097152
Little bit of z-fighting on some buildings
If you're having trouble with the RGL, here's what I did to fix it: Clean your prefix and then select 5.0 as your Proton version for the game. Launch, and let the launcher install itself. It will time out since it can't connect, so after that happens, switch to 5.13 and launch the game again. Launcher should connect and you can play!
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Use winecfg to update prefix to Windows 10+; R* dropped support for older versions of Windows.
Make sure to grab & install FusionFix (https://github.com/ThirteenAG/GTAIV.EFLC.FusionFix) for various enhancements & bug fixes.
Game runs excellently at max settings (only exceptions are Grass and Shadows)
Hot-plugging didn't work this session. May try to launch the game with it already powered on.
I had trouble saving my settings when I first launched the game. I found that they would only apply if I had a savegame. If you had the same trouble as I did, go through the introduction and save or download an existing save, and then attempt to apply settings.
I had some stuttering during gameplay; very brief, but enough to get on my nerves. This was solved by enabling gamemode with gamemoderun %command%
in the launch options.
I had one or two CTD, but nothing as of late.
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=90 MANGOHUD=0 %command%
As with the other graphical settings in GTA V, you have to fully quit and relaunch the game for your resolution options to be correctly applied. Otherwise, you'll face quite the headache.
The newest patch brings a torrent of aggrivating microstutters in both singleplayer and online. I have no idea what's causing them (could just be my setup); caveat emptor!
Thanks to Rockstar's lenient anti-cheat solutions, GTA Online on Linux is a breeze and works just as in Windows.
Great game; be prepared to do some workarounds and deal with strange issues.
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 DXVK_HUD=1 MANGOHUD=0 %command%
ERR_MEM_EMBEDDEDALLOC_ALLOC
after 20+ minutes of playtime. No discernable cause. I'm not getting the texture streaming bug before the crash like other reporters here.
Besides the crashes, no problems with online or any anti-cheat.
Fun game; runs surprisingly well!
Some cutscenes played with a bit of stutter. One time I played, the game itself had a bit of 'jumpiness' but this was solved by a quick Alt+Tab.
Had a CTD when something exploded, but that's all the crashes for me so far.
Works great natively. No tinkering required!
Speaker setup defaults to 5.1 speakers on launch, which reduce audio on a 2 speaker or headphones setup.
Smooth experience after some shader compilation.
Some stuttering at the beginning of the game, presumably from shaders. This is resolved quickly. Notification crash seems to be fixed in 5.13-2.
The game is seamless multiplayer from what I understand; entering the game "hub" had no problems.
Uses Vulkan natively, which is a nice bonus. Game looks good and plays well.
Occasional stutter from physics / framerate decoupling; this is also present in Windows
Native runs well. Proton runs a bit better.
Don't know if I'm imaging this, but the volume settings don't seem to scale the same way as in native.
Some reflective surfaces have minor artifacting, but nothing that will be noticed during regular play.
Proton felt better than native build. Pleasant experience!
This game is somewhat unoptimized in my opinion, but that's the same throughout the Windows, Mac, and Linux builds. Expect some 'jumpiness' with high bot counts or a number of mods. Base game should run fine.
To use the Vulkan backend if not automatically enabled, append -force-vulkan
to your launch options.
The game runs very well, but good luck finding any populated non-EAC server
A little bit of z-fighting on some connecting textures, but nothing on a big scale.
The usual story: can only connect to EAC-disabled servers, and even then through console commands, and not the main browser.
Native version runs like a charm!
I have gamemode installed, but not enabled as a launch option, as the game will automatically use the daemon if its detected.
mesa_glthread=true mangohud %command%
Occassional menu & parallax flickering. Not very noticeable, and passes quickly.
Sometimes started as a window; I needed to re-enable fullscreen. Resolution option doesn't seem to work either.
Infrequent CTD on launch, usually resolves after one or two re-launches.
Starbound uses a single-threaded OpenGL renderer, so I'm trying out mesa_glthread. YMMV
Game plays well with some minor quirks
I had some issues with sound effects being delayed after exiting the water in some circumstances. However, this fixed itself after a short time, probably by entering a vehicle or habitat.
Some occasional temporary hangs and stuttering while I was playing. I hear this game is unoptimized or is still a buggy mess from it's Early-Access days; I haven't played this game on Windows in a long time, and can't compare performance, so I can't tell if it's my computer or the game itself.
mangohud %command%
"mastercomfig" optimizations highly recommended (particularly the OpenGL addon)
Funny time-killer runs buttery smooth!
Used Proton-GE. Mouse sensetivity is low by default, so make sure to adjust it in game settings.
I read that Origin likes to write often to its configuration directory, causing some stuttering in-game. GamingOnLinux suggested removing write privileges to the directory with this example command: chmod -R -w ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1237970/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Application\ Data/Origin
(modify for your situation)
Keep in mind that the above fix will prevent Origin from updating, so revert when needed.
Some stuttering on level/scene loads, but it stabilizes fairly quickly. Also disable notifications in Origin, as they pull you out of the game window and can be a nuisance.
MANGOHUD=1 %command% -disablepagefilecheck
Make sure to keep the Steam Overlay enabled to prevent a strange stuttering bug, which happens after playing a while (~30 minutes in my case).
