works out of the box. just enable the special edition for the first game (and download it)
guide to improve the game and add american mcgee's alice https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3014521889
when booting up american mcgee's alice the menu screen will be broken. to fix that i mapped two of the back pedals/buttons (L4 and R4) to the Alt and Eenter buttons respectively. pressing them both will fix the screen
in the save screen menu the mouse and touch won't work very well. (in american mcgee's alice)
The game itself contains a bug which makes it impossible to use the umbrella to counter the attack, had to manually change game files.

game wouldnt launch for me at first. then i put the launch option command. after that i was able to unlock the special edition of this game
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
to add and play the original American McGee's Alice, unlock the framerate, and other improvements i followed this guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3014521889
it just works

Alice 1 can be played through this game with the adjustments above.
Runs correctly OOTB
Alt-tabbing may cause the game to silently crash.
Issues are not Linux related, it can occur on Windows as well.
It has a 30fps cap, so I recommend editing the .ini files to increase frame rate and disable intro videos.

Tweaked config files to set resolution, framerate and disable intro videos
Medium or high PhysX quality causes frequent performance issues and at least one reproducible crash. No more issues after setting it to low.
Menus were only partially visible with default resolution, making it difficult to change it. Had to tweak the config file to set the native resolution.

Works perfectly out of the box. I tried messing with the ini files following the recommendation or others but it turns out they already had the max framerate set to 60 and the games runs fine as is. PhysX was set to low upon launch too. Haven't encountered the shrinking issue myself but turning off AA apparently fixes it if it ever happens.
On the default settings the game runs at 60 99% of the time. Only issue is SteamOS' frame limiter, which seems to introduce framepacing issues at any other limit than 60. But since the game runs fine as is and isn't too battery hungry, it's not a big problem.

Adjusted min and max framerate in default.ini to 30 and 45
Occasionally, and only when coming out of sleep mode. Restarting game would fix it.
Massive slowdown in scenes with some enemies if physX is not set to low

Some menu items are not accessible using the default controller layout. "Dress" in main menu and "Reset" and "Retry" in mini games. Either use the touchscreen or switch to Mouse and Keyboard layout. Click the buttons and switch back to the default controller layout.
PhysX. Set it to low otherwise the game won't even hit the 30fps (in game fps lock) in heavier screens and especially with black goo on the ground.
Note: The game has an build-in 30fps lock you can not disable from within the game it self.

Disabling intro videos:

;StartupMovies=Intro_SH.bik
;StartupMovies=TechLogo_Short.bik
The game does not run well on the steam deck's 16:10 aspect ratio, the image will be squished vertically with visible "tearing" lines.
Setting Game Resolution
in Game Properties...
> General
to 1280x720
fixes that issue.
The Equip
menu can be accessed by pressing the X
button.
This menu does not show controller inputs and the key bindings deviate from the rest of the game and therefore are unintuitive (left stick to navigate the menu entries and D-pad for rotation/zoom).
The game runs at 30fps max by default and has slight issues with the 1280x800 resolution. A "typical gamer" might have no problems with these things.

Config files folder: /steamapps/common/Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/Config/
- Initially, the game did not work and closed by itself. It was necessary for me to select the correct resolution for my environment in the DefaultEngine.ini file.
[SystemSettings]
ResX=1920
ResY=1080
For 60 FPS
- By default, the game only runs at 30 FPS. In the DefaultEngine.ini file you can change it to:
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=60
Extras Contents
- To activate extra game content such as: clothes, weapons, also in the DefaultEngine.ini file:
GIsSpecialPCEdition=TRUE
General
- It was an excellent experience. After the initial adjustments to the game's resolution, I didn't have any further issues.

Game completed without ANY problems

It technically works without issue, but its locked at 30 fps. Followed a Steam guide to change the DefaultEngine.ini to unlock frames.

make sure physx is set to low (I would imagine that Nvidia GPUs might be able to set it to med or high without much perf impact)

Save games do not get saved in cloud, you will have to manually transfer saves from your other devices
Slight stuttering here and there but nothing major.

Apart from the frame rate drops, the game runs well.
Sometimes the fps drops

En algunas ocasiones, no guardó mi partida y me regresó un par de veces a un capitulo anterior.
Cuando aparecen muchos enemigos, el juego se vuelve lento, así que para tener una mejor experiencia, es mejor bajar todo a medios.

I edited the game's .ini file to increase the framerate. It can also be used to unlock the bonus content such as the original Alice game. There are guides posted by others below on how to do that.
Although my XBOX ONE controller worked fine, the button prompts ingame assumed I was using kb+m.
Every now and again the game would crash randomly. It doesn't happen that often.
At first I followed what other reports said but the game wouldn't start. It was only once I disabled Steam overlay and switched to Proton Experimental that the game booted up. Aside from the aforementioned issues, the game ran great. Make sure to turn PhysX down to low to make the game run better.

Changed the "MaxSmoothedFrameRate=" in the DefaultEngine.ini file to 90 to match the OLED Deck's refresh rate.
Does not support Steam Cloud, I had to start a new game.
Some slowdown in a specific early cutscene (likely due to a sudden influx of enemies).

To uncap the game from 30fps go to /path/to/game/AliceGame/Config/DefaultEngine.ini and change the line:
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=31.000000
In [Engine.Engine] and [UnrealEd.UnrealEdEngine] to your monitor refresh rate +1.
Game is locked to 31fps unless you edit the config.ini file.
If you want things like higher framerates check out some of the fixes listed on the pcgamingwiki page for this game.
Tweaks for increased frame limit and better frame pacing (in your prefix: My Documents/My Games/Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/Config/AliceEngine.ini
)
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=62
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=122
Basically MinSmoothedFrameRate = 1/2 * FPS + 2
and MaxSmoothedFrameRate = FPS + 2`
Make sure to use Steam Input if using Sony controllers, as AMR doesn't support anything but XBOX gamepads.
When certain characters are rendered on screen, such as the Cheshire Cat, I experienced some noticable slowdown ranging from 10-15 reduced fps to almost 100-105 reduced fps! Luckily, this goes away after the character stops rendering, and the majority of the game is unaffected (so far in my gameplay, at least).
It's possible to integrate DLC content and the original American McGee's Alice (Alice1) into AMR. Look for instructions from other ProtonDB contributors/look it up online.

Added back in the DLC content by going to /steamapps/common/Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/Config/DefaultEngine find GIsSpecialPCEdition=FALSE, replace FALSE with TRUE. Then we gotta bump up the FPS to 60, for this in the same ini find MinSmoothedFrameRate=21.000000 and MaxSmoothedFrameRate=30.000000 and change the Min to 30 and Max to 60 (you could probably set both to 60). Enabling Ambient Occlusion by finding "TEXTUREGROUP" and changing AmbientOcclusion=False to True. If you want to play the first Alice game make sure to change lice1Path=......\Alice1.bin to Alice1Path=....\Alice1.bin . I will leave a link here to the steam guide I followed (this also has a link for American McGee's Alice) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2881785983 If you have a problem with the Umbrella not working like I did you can follow this guide here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2868640315 (steamapps/compatdata/19680/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser)
Played through the entire game and everything was fine. You could play the game out of the box, but you might not enjoy the 20-30 frames so configuring is pretty much a must unless you're comfortable at those frames. Also some users like myself have experienced an umbrella bug where it doesn't activate, again can be fixed. Also if you of course want the DLC skins you gotta edit the config ini as well. So overall just kind of a bad PC port, but it does work flawlessly after tweaking. Dualsense, Dualshock 4, and Steam Controller all work, would honestly recommend a controller with 2 physical analog sticks as m/kb or even the SC right pad don't feel great with this game.
Just plain worked.
Game runs great after turning PhysX to Low in settings. Can also up the max framerate to 60fps and will run well.
60fps ini file update per https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2022/03/alice-madness-returns-appears-on-steam-again-works-well-on-steam-deck-with-60fps-fix/
Unless PhysX is set to low in settings loads of slowdown. Set to PhysX to low and no issues.
60fps all day long on the Steam Deck.
Flawless with default Proton (no widescreen support, alas).

The game is normally has some framerate issues and is locked to 30fps by default, this can however be changed by messing with some ini files. This also makes it possible to enable costumes normally only accessible for the special edition of the game
Locked to 40fps with screen at 40hz
Post-processing can cause a black screen when shrunk. This only happens when anti-aliasing is enabled. To fix this either turn off anti-aliasing (recommended) or post-processing in the settings. So far no further issues.
Plays perfectly fine out of the box, but performance can be improved with some ini edits.
Microsoft .net framework would install each time I launched the game until I renamed "$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Alice Madness Returns/installscript.vdf" to something else to prevent it from bring run.
post process must be turned off, screen turns black when alice shrinks
post process does not work when your character shrinks, screen turns black
opening the main menu in the middle of a game makes the menu run at a slow framerate, not game breaking but disorienting
Slight performance degregation when loading levels, otherwise more than playable
You absolutely need to turn off post-processing
This problem was caused by post-processing
Very heavy framerate drops I did not expect from this hardware. I locked the framerate to 30fps in the quick menu on Steam and this seemed to help a little.
When you use your shrink potion, the entire screen turns black except for some elements. This can be fixed by turning off post-processing. Such a shame!
I didn't know this game didn't have more than 30fps to offer, and also didn't expect this many framedrops in certain areas. I also had to do some reddit research to find the solution to my shrink potion problem.
If you have dynamic shadows turned on, shrink sense will make the screen go completely dark. Turning off the setting fixes the issue.
To fix the 30 fps issue, edit the Engine/Config/BaseEngine.ini
file and make sure the following settings are set:
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62
For Alice 1 (American McGee's Alice), you can obtain it in a few ways (I'll link them here because it's hard to obtain these days and I couldn't find an official way to get it):
This Steam Community Guide has a link to it The zipped Alice1 directory on archive.org The original CD ISOs on archive.org
Once Alice1 is set up, add it as a non-Steam game and run it with the latest Proton (I used Proton Experimental).
Important: The in-game menu and the game itself won't display properly after the splash screens. You must hit Alt + Enter to toggle fullscreen to fix this. After that, the game should work for the rest of the play session
