Game's pretty enjoyable. as long as you apply the Config changes that also every Windows user needs to apply.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm.dll=n,b" %command%
Changed Values
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/Config/DefaultEngine.ini:
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=144
GIsSpecialPCEdition=TRUE
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/19680/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/Config/AliceEngine.ini:
bUseBackgroundLevelStreaming=False
PhysXGpuHeapSize=512
PhysXMeshCacheSize=64
This might be an only-me thing but some Video / Audio this game plays has a loud background buzz on modern Proton Version. (GE10+) Switching back to GE7-55 fixed this.
This isn't a Linux related issue. The Config file changes fix this.
If you play on a small display, like on the SteamDeck, just launching the game without any tinkering should be fine and playable. Although for Big Displays, the config changes are definitely in order.
flawless.
considering it's a port of a mobile focused game, I didn't expect it to run that flawlessly.
Steps below are tailored towards Steam Deck users:
Open "Discover" -> Search for "Protontricks" and "Flatseal" & install 'em.
Open "Flatseal" -> Select Protontricks and scroll to the 'Filesystem' section and enable the 'All user files' permission.
Open "Konsole" aka the terminal.
paste the following commands:
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks --no-bwrap 893180 mf
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks --no-bwrap 893180 mf_catherine.verb
media in this game is very broken, follow the steps above to fix it.

install lavfilters in the pfx
in a few of the first scenes, the game ran with what felt like 10 fps sometimes. which is not really that big of a deal in a Visual Novel.
It's also important to mention that this choppyness fixed itself whenever an animation accured, so the experience wasn't really degraded.
Maybe KDE's Adaptive snync had something to do with it but I doubt it. Anyhow, it seems not not happen at all when the game is left in full screen from a relaunch.
in the patched version, there is a black screen which can be dismissed with a mouse click. probably an Opening movie failing to load? apparently lavfilters fixes it. I probably broke my lavfilters install by half-hearedly moving the prefix from one machine to another, ignoring a few transfer failiures in the process. In any case. I doubt I missed any content because of it. (watched the opening movie straight from the game files ;3)
eventhough the broken font looks cool, without the dll override it's unledgible. Which is kinda an issue in a Visual Novel. :p
after switching to proton 7 & tolerating the first few mins of slight stutters, it works flawlessly
The game is unable to load it's save on newer proton versions, resulting in a black screen after the into cutscenes. using any proton version in the 7 range fixes this.
always slight stuttering in the first few mins of play
Launching straight from Steam, would a typical gamer enjoy playing this game on Linux even without tinkering? Yes - if you don't close the game
