I tried to run it directly without proton, with proton experimental, v8.0-4 and v7.0-6. But none of them worked. In the console it says
Wine cannot find the FreeType font library. To enable Wine to use TrueType fonts please install a version of FreeType greater than or equal to 2.0.5.
But I have already run paru -S freetype2 successfully

Note: If you had any problems with the game crashing, be sure that you have installed the correct version of steam, using the correct lib32 that directly supports your graphics card. I have an Nvidia card, but because I installed the wrong version (lib32-amdvlk) the game was crashing on launch, and most of my games suffered from stutters. After I reinstalled steam with lib32-nvidia-utils, it fixed the issue

Worked perfectly out of the box.
Ran through the game once without any issues, went back to a couple chapters to get the rest of the fable entries and didn't have any issues with that either. Telltale games have been real solid.
