Runs flawlessly
I haven't noticed any issues so far. Everything feels responsive and I easily hit the FPS cap.
Performance is not what I would expect, but overall a great experience
Given the simplistic style and game engine in use, performance is much lower than expected. I am averaging 120-140fps with occasional dips. During boss fights and other intensive scenes, FPS can drop as low as 70-90fps. I am not sure if this is unique to Linux as I have not played under Windows
Online Party DLC works perfectly
Runs great
The game would rapidly flicker outside of fullscreen
With max settings at 1440p, I am easily able to achieve >120fps. The game looks and feels great.
Ran perfectly and without noticeable latency
Although performance was imperfect, I am fairly sure this is due to my video card and not an indication of its quality through Proton
Note: I played this game through family sharing which is why I do not own it
Native Vulkan is much less stable than DX11, but will often net higher performance
Under the Vulkan renderer, there'd occasionally be significant graphical artifacting upon joining a game or quitting to menu. The issue would fix by exiting to menu and rejoining. Doesn't appear to occur on DX11.
Under the Vulkan renderer, the game would crash every now and then. This was much more prevalent during act 3
Vulkan was an overall less-than-stable experience, often crashing from tabbing out or trying to use actions too quickly. Act 3 was filled with a lot of seemingly random crashes, which lost us progress quite a few times.
DX11 was very stable, so far I have not had any crashes with it. However, performance varies a lot more than I'd like. I am usually averaging 60-70 FPS but this can suddenly drop down to 20-30 in certain areas for seemingly no reason, it is quick to recover upon leaving problematic areas
Everything worked perfectly, with minimal latency and very good performance
There were occasional slowdowns, but not to the degree of annoyance. I don't think this issue is caused by Proton and instead lean towards my hardware or graphics drivers
Modding was a painless experience thanks to Beataroni, although there seems to be no obvious way to remove installed mods
The VR system in use is a HTC Vive Original, running on the Sway wayland compositor
It felt absolutely terrible to play, not exactly sure why. Perhaps poor frametimes? Regardless, everything just felt bad.
There was inconsistent latency on the hit objects, it felt like they just kept slowing down and speeding up very slightly, almost rubber-bandy. Additionally, controller tracking seemed to have quite a bit of lag when hitting notes, I found myself frequently taking 1-3 steps back to compensate.
The game performs perfectly, buttery smooth on much lower powered AMD hardware so perhaps an issue with NVIDIA's Vulkan driver? I have since switched back to using an RX 580 as it provides a much more fluid experience and feels significantly better to play.
Tested on an original HTC Vive
Near-flawless but it's a good idea to keep save backups
This game does not appear to use steam cloud for save backups, instead relying on its own system. Under proton, you will receive a network unavailable error when attempting to login.
There are some minor stutters at the start and end of a match and the steam overlay doesn't work but everything else is relatively fine without the need for any tweaks.
Run's flawlessly
I've yet to notice any significant issues, but there is an occasional crackle in the background music. I think this is down to my specific setup and don't think it'll be an issue for the majority of people.
I was easily able to hit my FPS target without any slow downs or notable issues
Multiplayer just worked, I did not experience any latency issues while playing with people across the globe
Fantastic out of the box and optionally very enjoyable with friends via Seamless Coop mod
python er-patcher --all --rate 90 -f --executable ersc_launcher.exe -- %command%
Runs fantastic at 60fps. However, it is not well optimized for framerates above this. Uncapping the framerate, I am only able to achieve a stable 90fps while my hardware is barely utilized.
Raytracing is very unstable, even low setting would sometimes drop to 30fps or less for seemingly no reason. There is not much of a visual improvement from raytracing so I would recommend disabling for now.
Although I have had no issues with the base game, I have been playing entirely with the Seamless Coop mod. Seamless Coop is currently beta quality so bugs are not uncommon, these are usually just mild inconveniences with the most annoying one I've experienced being an occasional infinite loading screen necessitating a game restart.
Although there are some severe performance issues, it is still enjoyable if you're playing with friends.
Game runs very poorly and inconsistently. Using ultra preset results in the same performance as very low. FPS will sometimes just drop down to 30 and typically won't raise until a restart.
Crashes on launch when attempting to play in VR
I have tried many different versions of Proton, including the custom version listed by another report. If no headset is detected in SteamVR, it will successful launch
The VR system in use is a HTC Vive Original, running on the Sway wayland compositor
Works perfectly, no noticeable issues and consistent latency.
I am easily able to get 100+ fps at 1440p max settings. AMDVLK performs poorly, use RADV.
I am not able to achieve higher than 60fps on stage. This is perfectly fine, but much lower than I would expect for the type of game it is. Off stage, I am easily able to reach 170fps
Proton Experimental only achieves around 30fps on stage which is still very playable, but GE will provide a much smoother experience
A pretty great experience, I was able to comfortably full complete the game under linux
Switching to and from fullscreen would occasionally crash the game
The final realization of most floors would result in a crash after completion. This does not matter much since it saves your progress and you can watch the cutscene through the Credenza, but it does ruin the mood a little.
Things have drastically improved over my last report, I am easily able to hit at least 120fps in more demanding Receptions and otherwise stick close to my fps target of 170. There are occasional drops when a lot is happening on screen, but it is only for a few seconds at most
Aside from the stuttering, the game runs flawlessly
There was a constant stutter while moving around and during panning cut-scenes, it was rather distracting.
The game has a low internal resolution, using fullscreen and integer scaling results in the best graphical fidelity.
Update from previous report; stutter was caused by unrelated issues outside of the game. I should've done more testing before posting my initial report
Older and newer versions of proton have a 60fps cap under wayland, regardless of monitor refresh rate. Proton experimental occasionally crashes when in fullscreen, and has a noticeable amount of latency over 5.13-6.
Proton-ge refuses to launch, older base proton versions used to have this issue as well. I'm unsure why they suddenly work.
Voice recognition doesn't work. Runs well without it, but you do lose out on voice box which can make singleplayer sessions a little more difficult.
I've found Proton-5.0-10 to work the best. Previous versions have issues connecting to servers and later versions are unstable, with some failing to launch.
Although there are significant performance issues, it is still fun to play with friends and lowering your settings does make it playable.
latest Proton-GE
Switching between fullscreen and windowed sometimes results in mouse input to no longer register. Although, I have experienced this in quite a few other games as well and suspect it might be an issue with Proton/Wine and Wayland.
The game runs very inconsistently and poorly, getting frequent dips to <30fps at any reasonable settings. in order to receive playable fps, I'm forced to use lowest settings and a very low resolution and still have difficulty going above 60fps in game. Sometimes fps will just drop and not raise, without a restart. Considering the game is early access and larger maps perform significantly worse, I suspect this might be because of poor optimization and perhaps not a linux issue.
Performed perfectly in VR
If the desktop window is running at a high resolution, there are significant performance issues in certain areas making VR very nauseating
After turning down the resolution of the desktop window, it was perfectly playable
The VR system in use is a HTC Vive Original, running on the Sway wayland compositor
Does not work on the River Wayland compositor in a multi-monitor setup
The game launches on the incorrect monitor. The window cannot be tabbed into, all keyboard inputs are dropped and it cannot be moved to the correct monitor.
River is still considered unstable so bugs are to be expected, it works perfectly fine on other Wayland compositors such as Sway.
Under proton-experimental, mouse inputs are dropped. Other proton versions don't appear to have this issue.
Setting vsync to half results in a significant performance boost.
Without mods, the game works perfectly out of the box. With mods, it is unplayable at reasonable settings with the RADV Vulkan driver.
If playing with mods, the game achieves a very significant performance boost with the AMDVLK Vulkan driver. Going from an average of ~10-20 fps at 1440p to an average of ~130-170 (capped)
After installing the AMDVLK driver, the follow launch command is needed:
VK_ICD_FILENAMES="/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/amd_icd64.json:/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/amd_icd64.json" %command%Items will occasionally not appear in my inventory, or items I do not have will appear. I suspect this is caused by unprocessed Vulkan shaders but Steam will not offer to process them and there appears to be no way to do so manually.
Settings VSYNC to half results in a decent performance boost.
Everything just works with minor graphical artificating
Minor shadow flickering here and there, most noticeable on character selection
I have mostly played online with one other person and have only encountered issues while playing modded
This game appears to be rather CPU bound, I am unable to hit my target FPS and instead sit around an unstable 130fps while GPU usage is only around 80%. Looped runs can quickly drop down to <40fps. I have tried many things to improve FPS but so far all have been unsuccessful, I assume my CPU is just not capable of it. I appear to achieve better performance under Linux compared to Windows but have not extensively tested and have no plans of installing or using Windows anytime soon
Correction from my last report; VSYNC Half did not increase FPS, Steam overlay and MangoHUD simply report incorrectly when it is set. As the name suggests, it synchronises and caps FPS to half of the monitor's refresh rate. I am unsure why it is incorrectly reported, but the difference to responsiveness is noticeable. I was unable to notice any issues in my previous review as my GPU at the time was performing about the same regardless
