Gamescope argument upscales 2d assets, since without it, AJAA looks very pixelated at 1440p. Haven't tested the 3D games too much, but they seem to work fine on initial testing. Whole game seems to be locked at 30fps, with no mod yet unlike Great Ace Attorney.
Runs like butter. Great game too.
Game has problems with Playstation and Steam Deck controllers showing the wrong inputs and sometimes being mapped improperly. An update may have fixed this. Happens on Windows as well.
A certain bossfight midway through the game has severe framedrops. Also happens on Windows.
Made a turbo bind and enabled native touchscreen (this game supports it!)
Default resolution is sometimes wrong, causing blurry screen. Occasionally game boots in a very squished res, restarting game usually solves this.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mfplay.dll=d" %command%
Camera controls are a bit weird in third-person (movement keys will sometimes move camera), but there aren't serious situations where you're in third-person. Makes you feel a bit drunker at the bar.
The Wine DLL override is to fix the intro logo video, which can fail to play.
Works like native. HDR is supported in DirectX 12 mode (available as menu option on launch)
gamescope -H1440 -e -f --hdr-enable --force-grab-cursor -- env DXVK_HDR=1 %command% --nosplash
If running the game in Gamescope, --force-grab-cursor should be enabled. Without it, I had issues in menus where the mouse cursor would jump to the bottom-left, and ingame sometimes my look would be restricted.
When using simultaneous KB/M and gamepad input, you'll get flickering button prompts, and the button for Drop Pod may change (on gamepad it's Dpad-Down/4 twice, on KB/M it's 5 by default). Separated use/reload and laser/shout still works if they're mapped to the keyboard keys.
HDR doesn't honestly look great (broken colors in menus, the game itself is a bit dull), but that's an issue with the game, not Linux or Proton. Official mods work, haven't tested 3rd-party mod loaders.
No issues that I've seen running either the main game or some of the side content. May have a more detailed report after completing the game.

Significant framerate drops during Sandworm boss; ~200fps normally, down to ~40fps during the boss. No other bosses so far have had this. Likely also an issue in Windows.
Works perfectly aside from a few little quirks.
When defocusing, game goes back into windowed mode. Alt-enter fixes this, but this sometimes causes Alt to be "stuck" down until it is pressed again.
As above, when using Alt-Tab or Alt-Enter key combos, Alt might get "stuck" down, affecting both keyboard input and controller input (causing controller face buttons to affect ingame recording and Action Replay). This can be fixed by pressing Alt again.
Occasionally, after defocusing the game and refocusing it (i.e. alt-tabbing), the game will play at unplayably-low framerate until restarted. Doesn't happen consistently.

SteamInput produces some weirdness when playing simultaneously with KB/M and controller. Ladders can't be climbed with one input method if mounted with the other, and switching between input methods can cause you to become stuck on the ladder.
One part of the game lets you control an industrial crane. This sequence does not work properly with Steam Input, as you can't move it back or forward, only left and right.
Disabling Steam Input and enabling the in-game legacy controller input (Settings -> Mouse -> "Enable the gamepad") fixes all of these issues, but you don't get fancy button prompts or the ability to drive with the gas/brake on triggers.
The issues seem to stem from using a real mouse and (analog) keyboard. Just using a controller with the SteamInput actions should work flawlessly.
Couldn't get native touchscreen support to work
Game starts in 800x600 resolution with VSync ("refresh rate" setting) causing massive input lag. Can be changed from ingame menu.
On main menu sometimes controls would become unresponsive. Opening and closing Steam overlay usually fixed it. Input lag on default graphics settings.
Game flashes a white screen for a split-second before immediately exiting.
Tried on both DX11 and DX9 modes, and played with the following options:
-Forced OpenGL Renderer
-Forced Esync off
-Large Address Aware
I tried on both Proton 5.0-5 and 4.11-13
Had to use Proton Experimental to get the game to even launch. With medium-high settings and FSR AA, game looks and runs great.
On exiting the game, my DualSense would be stuck vibrating for awhile. DualSense adaptive triggers and haptics work, but only if the controller is wired and Steam Input is turned off (not Linux exclusive)
Turning on raytracing will always result in a crash after a few minutes, even though the game seems to run fine before it crashes.
Game never really dips below 60 fps on medium-high settings. Can enable raytracing with some launch options, but enabling it causes guaranteed crashes. DualSense controller works great, with minor issues listed.
Set gyro enable to L2 and put Jump, Dodge, Heal, and Dive on back grip buttons
Had issues with controller icons always displaying Xbox icons, even though I was using a DualSense controller and had selected those icons in the game's settings. To fix:
Open regedit with proton tricks. Create a DWORD key named "DisableHidraw" at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\winebus
and set the value to 1
See above issue with controller icons. Steam Input is required to set the correct mappings (touchpad should be backlog; set touchpad to "Select Button" in Steam Input; ingame controller support sets Create button to backlog and leaves touchpad blank).
Runs great on mid-tier hardware. With resolution scale dropped slightly and some graphics settings tweaked ("Effects" is a big one for performance), I am able to maintain a steady 100-120 fps in most scenes in the game so far.
Runs alright, ~30fps on default settings on DeckHD (1200p) screen. Had to mess with ingame settings to get to 60fps.
Ingame settings
Graphic Settings
- Windowed Mode: Borderless
- Resolution: 1920x1200 (16:10)
- Frame rate: Uncapped
- V-Sync: Off
- Anti-Aliasing: High
- Shadow Quality: Medium
- Texture Quality: Medium
- Post Processing: Medium
- Effects: Low
- Control Config: Type C
- Character Quality: Highest Quality
- Background Quality: High
- Cinematics Quality: High
- Rendering Resolution: (Slider set exactly in the middle)
With these settings, I was able to get 60fps in the train in Chapter 0, as well as in the first Mystery Labyrinth, without too much visual fidelity lost. You may be able to set some things higher on the default 800p display.

ChaudLoader always runs on startup and requires mouse + left click to navigate.
By default, intro screen is not animated. This seems to be a Steam Deck optimization, so setting the launch option fixes it. The Deck can handle it.
Game detects the Steam Deck and refuses to play in resolutions other than 1280x720. Launch option fixes this. The Deck can handle it.
Steam Deck optimizations take some of the wind out of this game's sails, as the main menu looks much cheaper with the static intro and the lack of resolution options makes proper scaling on displays other than the stock Deck's more difficult. Luckily, the Steam Deck optimizations can be easily disabled and the game still runs perfectly.
Opened with Steam Tinker Launch
Ingame. Changed button icons in Options menu to Xbox buttons. B is Confirm in menus by default, can be changed from ingame controls menu.
Some button icons are quite small, but still readable
Very slight audio hitches, likely due to playing from SD card. Noticeable when opening options menu for the first time and tabbing through. Added pulseaudio latency of 60ms from Steam Tinker Launch which seems to mitigate it.
Game works great, just press play.
Sometimes mouse cursor doesn't appear in menus. Moving the mouse a bit or alt-tabbing will bring it back, usually. Otherwise, all menus can be controlled with arrow keys.
SMAA or disabled Anti-Aliasing, 8x texture filtering.
The game starts at a low resolution, despite reporting 800p in Screen settings. Setting to another resolution and back fixes this.
Ambient occlusion shadows look weird. I disabled AO and the game looks no worse.
As above, game initially starts with low resolution.
A Steam issue with Playstation controllers in Game mode causes touchpad to always move the mouse.
No modding support, even with custom Proton. FAR isn't as necessary as on Windows, but it also means no texture packs.
Runs perfectly on max settings, controls work great, and game runs perfectly with no tinkering on Proton 9.
On Proton 8, Steam Input controllers wouldn't be detected (including Steam Deck controls). Not an issue on Proton 9
Game seems to work with Playstation 5 DualSense controller without Steam Input, and displays correct controller icons.
Played with DeckHD modded system, and runs at 1200p with no slowdown.
Also played with overclocked 70Hz display, kept a solid 70fps once the following things were set ingame:
- VSync ON
- Framerate set to DEFAULT
Then in Steam Quick Access Menu (... button):
- Framerate limit set to OFF
- Allow Tearing ON
- Refresh Rate set to 70Hz
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound=n,b" %command%
Enabled screen space reflections per PCGamingWiki
Game ignores resolution set by Steam Deck and tries to fill the whole screen, despite being made for 16:9. This can cause weird artifacts to appear in the top and bottom rows of pixels. This can be mitigated with either running the game in a window and setting the resolution from there, or using P3Rfix below.
Graphics settings are saved into the individual save slots, meaning you'll likely have to manually change your graphics settings if you go between Steam Deck and PC.
Additionally, Episode Aigis DLC will not respect your settings from the main game, and you'll have to set them again. These are not Linux or Steam Deck problems, but problems with the game.
I am using a DeckHD screen and custom cooling solution (PTM thermal pad). Below are the options I'm using, which has given me 60fps in most areas of the main game and extremely consistently in the Episode Aigis DLC.
On my Steam Deck, I have Unified Frame Limit Management settings disabled in the system settings (bottom of Display tab), so I can set Refresh Rate and Framerate separately.
Steam Deck QAM (... button):
- Framerate Limit OFF
- Refresh Rate 60 Hz
- FMVs run at 24 or 30fps, and as such, odd refresh rates should be avoided
- Allow Tearing ON
- YMMV, but I haven't noticed any tearing.
- Remember: only ONE tearing prevention option should be enabled at a time, if any are enabled at all
Ingame settings:
Graphics Settings:
- Rendering Scale 75%
- only if playing at 1080p; 100% should be good for 720p
- Shadow Quality Low
- or Middle, can again depend on resolution
- Frame Rate Limit 60
- Reflections OFF
- This setting specifically controls Ray Traced Reflections and WILL turn the game into a PowerPoint presentation if left on
- Using PCGamingWiki fix, this should still allow Screen Space Reflections
Display Settings:
- Screen Mode: Fullscreen
- Window if you don't want to use P3RFix
- VSync OFF
- YMMV, but I haven't noticed any tearing.
- Remember: only ONE tearing prevention option should be enabled at a time, if any are enabled at all
I also installed P3Rfix and changed the individual lines of the P3RFix.ini file as follows (do not just copy this):
[Custom Resolution]
Enabled = true
Width = 1920
Height = 1080
[Intro Skip]
SkipTo = 1
[Enable Console]
Enabled = false
Developer/publisher logos play, then goes to a black screen
Tried disabling esync, forcing large address aware.
Forcing D3D results in an error dialog stating that my computer doesn't meet minimum requirements (despite the fact that it exceeds them)
Installed the following: wmp9, devenum, quartz
PS4 Touchpad doesn't seem to function (at least in the control remapping menu)
install wmp9, devenum, quartz
Dualshock 4 touchpad isn't detected by game; had to map in-game controls around that limitation (luckily, the game lets you fully remap controls in the menu)
Consistent stuttering when triggering All-Out attack; seems to happen on Windows too
The hotfixes don't seem to work properly; game crashes after logos with any of the hotfixes installed. However, they are handled through Steam's "Betas" system, so they can easily be applied and unapplied. The game runs perfectly without the hotfixes, and they only seem to fix very specific problems anyway.
Turned refresh rate down to 45hz, set TDP to 8 and GPU clock to 600
Game crashed once after loading a quicksave and trying to fuse personas. Hasn't happened again.
Japanese audio issues seems to be fixed, as are the weird stutters (like on all-out attacks). Game can't be launched more than once without internet, which sucks for a handheld game, but it's still fun when Atlus does let you play the game you bought.
gamescope -h1440 -H1440 -b -r144 --framerate-limit 144 -- %command%
When not using Gamescope, game would sometimes silently fail. When this would happen, character portraits would disappear and opening the Options menu whould close the game. Running in Gamescope with fixed refresh/framerate fixed the issue.
During one session, the game didn't act when the lower half of the screen was clicked. Restarting the game fixed it.
Slight choppiness when screen is "panning" (courtroom scenes, 2-screen investigation rooms). Fixed (or at least less noticeable) by capping framerate to refresh rate using Gamescope.
Game works perfectly when framerate is capped at 60. Touchpad controls are a plus; just like the DS days.
Change right trackpad to move Mouse, and "Touch" command to left click (this lets me "examine" areas easier). Changed back grip buttons to "A button" (Confirm/Examine) and "Y Button" (Present Evidence).
TDP and GPU Clock can be lowered quite a bit without slowdown. I use the lowest settings.
The game can be blurry on first start up due to low default resolution. Set the resolution in the game's settings.
Sometimes audio can become horribly distorted after waking from sleep. Saving and restarting the game always fixed this.
Game can be choppy when "panning" (courtroom scenes, examining 2-screen rooms). Cap framerate to make this less noticeable.
Also, disabling ingame V-Sync and keeping Steam's V-Sync on ("Allow Tearing" off) may help with latency and smoothness.
Game occasionally drops frames when Peppino is going too fast.
gamemoderun gamescope -H1440 -r144 -e -f --hdr-enable --force-grab-cursor --mangoapp -- env DXVK_HDR=1 %command%
No simultaneous KB/M and Controller input, which was present in GTAV. Likely not a Linux problem. Gyro aim is harder to map due to this.
No prompts for Playstation or Nintendo controllers are present ingame. Steam Input may be required for some controllers.
When first starting the game, framerate dips to single-digits until some HUD overlay elements go away. Game seems smooth after that.
There is a glitch where going to back to main menu from ingame, then loading your game again will cause GPU usage to drop to 75% and the game's framerate to drop to below 60fps.
Launch options are simply for enabling HDR and Gamemode on desktop. Gyro aim does not work without significant tinkering. KB/M controls are comprehensive. Found no issues with game control, although I haven't play much yet.
Pretty good once you get past the launcher. Had to tinker with graphics settings a bit with DeckHD Screen.
Need touchpad remapped to mouse, or touch screen, to navigate Rockstar Launcher on first launch. Need to invoke keyboard manually (STEAM + X) to input login information.
Used DeckHD 1200p (1920x1200) screen. Game plays great (60 fps in Armadillo with slight momentary hitches) at 1920x1200 resolution with following settings:
Steam Deck QAM (... Button)
- Refresh Rate: 60 Hz
- Disable Frame Limit: On
Ingame Settings (Options -> Graphics)
- Screen Type: Fullscreen
- Resolution: 1920 x 1200
- Refresh Rate: 60 Hz

- Triple Buffering: Off
- Shadow Quality: Low
- Shadow Blend: Dithered
- Anisotropic Level: x16
- Anti-Aliasing / Upscaling Method: FXAA
- Resolution Scaling: Off
- Motion Blur: Disabled
- Level of Detail Settings: (All settings here start with 1 at the far left)
- Geometry: 2/6
- Terrain: 2/10
- Tree LoD: 1/5
- Tree Draw Distance: 1/3

Additional Information
- My Steam Deck has a custom PTM thermal pad cooling solution
- My Steam Deck has been modified to have 4GB of VRAM
- This information is with very little time spent ingame. Will update later if anything changes throughout my playthrough (mainly of Undead Nightmare)

Ground textures flicker at 60FPS. Lowering framerate cap to 30 fixes this. Lowering GPU clock may also fix this, but can lower performance.
Game has significant frame drops and input delay with default settings. Lowering framerate cap to 30, disabling VSync, and lowering Anti Aliasing improved performance.
Game crashes often when Volumetric Lighting is set to High... i think. It certainly does crash sometimes.
Had some issues with audio cutting out completely for a few minutes.
Game seems to randomly select graphics presets on launch; I always have to change it back to "medium" to get 60fps.
Leaving graphics preset higher than Medium can cause GPU resets
Some multiplayer modes are a bit more demanding than the singleplayer, 3v1 mode in particular. 720p + Medium settings should make it run fine.
Works fine, but you're probably playing this game docked, which is a bit of a hassle if you want native res.

Tested briefly with basic Proton 8, and it doesn't seem different from GE for this game, so YMMV. Even enabling Aggregate Lighting doesn't seem to affect performance or stability. I didn't mess with multisampling. No audio issues that I could tell from playing the first 3 levels.
