Tested briefly with basic Proton 8, and it doesn't seem different from GE for this game, so YMMV. Even enabling Aggregate Lighting doesn't seem to affect performance or stability. I didn't mess with multisampling. No audio issues that I could tell from playing the first 3 levels.
Everything works just fine except for the audio which suffers from major quality degradation
Audio after the first level I played sounded like I was in the bottom of a tin can.
I want to make it clear that the graphical settings, gameplay, and general functionality of the game functions perfectly through proton. The only real issue is the audio. If you don't care about the audio then you'll be fine, and the issue I experienced was after the first mission. Otherwise someone smarter than me will need to come up with a solution.

Works fine in general, just minor audio issues
Especially when using the Plasma Gun, the audio sounded broken. General audio is okay.

crash during splash
small black window and page fault after a few seconds. I recall this working a long time ago (albeit very stuttery because DXVK was young and my PC weak)
Playable with audio distortion
Some really annoying filter on sound effects. Sometimes ear-piercing with headphones

Runs out of the box.

Has a bit of stuttering, but works flawlessly otherwise.

Aggregate Lighting will cause crashes. Significant framerate issues and stuttering regardless of graphic and resolution settings. No other issues found.

Minor FPS issues as expected, otherwise perfect. Even detected my 360 pad.

Like native

Game was playable, but there were noticeable framerate issues and stuttering, even with graphics quality turned down.

Small black window, then it closes. No clear single cause in logs.
