Game runs extremely slow except in main menu and cutscenes.

A black screen is all I got
Sad, would love to play this classic again. But without any tinkering it appears to not being playable at all!

Assigned L3 and R3 to L4 and R4 to work around non working L3 & R3 commands (looks like a common issue in this game)
Extra long loadings with stable Proton releases. Fixed with Proton Experimental.
It works fine out of the box

Using GE-Proton seems to alleviate a lot of issues. Without it you may just get a black screen.
On first time startup you will need to use the touchscreen or mouse (by holding Steam button and using the right trackpad).
Locked 60fps with highest graphical settings on the OLED Steam Deck at screen resolution (800p). NOTE: The game itself will not utilize the full height and instead run at 720p (though you can stretch to fit (not suggested))

I followed the notes left by others in terms of touching the screen + hitting the steam button, and was able to get through the EULA, but in the base mode the intro cutscene won't play no matter what resolution I set and if I hold down LMB/the screen. The cutscene will play when launched on desktop mode for some reason.

Non-technical users may find this title difficult to play despite the little troubleshooting required to play it.
Just toggled inverted vertical joystick
Some text is scaled off screen until resolution is corrected
The game wants 1920x1080 resolution and is starting in windowed mode. Default resolution makes things appear offscreen until you fix the in game resolution.
The game runs well. It's sad to see this great game get a silver rating because the dev's opted for windowed 1080p as the default settings, instead of borderless + dynamic resolution assignment.
Looking for a work around/fix for the suspended state issue, will update if I fix. This is the tap and hold the screen, press the steam button, release your finger and finally press the steam button again to allow the game to return to a resumed state without constantly pressing the screen.
To correct the resolution issues I had, I followed the steps below.
- Booted the game, closed the game via Steam Button > Z.O.E. Title Menu > Exit Game
- Went to the cog wheel on the games library steam page.
- Properties > General > Game Resolution
- Changed from Default to 1920x1080
- Launched the Game
- Went to the in game options
- Display > Resolution > 1366x768
- Display > Windowed Mode > Borderless Fullscreen
- Saved settings, closed game.
- Restarted the game, ran without issue.

Need to force 1280x800 resolution on the Steam Deck game menu by going to settings (the gear icon) --> General --> Force Resolution. Changed in-game resolution to 1366x768 and had a crisp, stable 60 fps experience.

Works OOTB
Previously, you'd have to hold left click to get the game to boot. Then, once you were at the menu, Alt+Tab to a different program, then Alt+Tab back into the game to get it to "hold" so you could play without holding left click. This "issue" appears to have been resolved, as the game now boots normally, letting you play without any issue.
The issue when starting the game is best discribed below by Neage Tsukuyomi. After following their instructions and changing the resolution to 800p the game ran at 60 fps on high settings.
"Game starts in a paused state... You have to click on the screen and click the "steam" button on your deck to bring up the steam menu and you can release your press on the screen and hit the "steam" button again to get back into the game and the game will contiue running as normal. If you click on the screen again the video will pause again and you will have to repeat the above process."
It'd be great if the game ran. But it doesn't. At least not with the easier fixes. I did not try anything too advanced to get it working. But as is, GE and default Protons will not boot.
Added a permanent toggle option for left click mouse with the grip button
Resolution needs to be setted correctly or the aspect ratio is not correct

Requires an easy enough work around but the typical gamer probably wouldn't figure that out without some research
When you first launch the game the resolution is wrong and you kind of have to guess or know where the setting is to adjust the resolution, once adjusted its fine.
Game starts in a paused state... Game launches to a black screen and does nothing. If press the touch screen the opening video starts playing...when I release it stops. Tried launching game from desktop mode to try the Alt-Tab trick and it does not work... when I alt tab to another thing like a program the game will be in the background playing like normal but when I alt tab back and bring the game back up to the front it pauses again.
Works perfectly OOB with any of the newest Proton versions (tested the three latest).
Alternating the options from windowed/borderless is fine, but then to Fullscreen, the screen is black/does not take input from controller, seeing the progress of the 10 second time out before the screen reverts to the previous option is only visible by alternating between windows, otherwise it is the only item in the menu that I have difficulty with.
Before latest Proton 6 version, audio was choppy and I couldn't fix it. winedlloverride=xaudio
whatever that line was, did not work for me in the launch options, but now it just works OOB.

Like some others, the game is frozen at start. You have to hold left mouse click to keep it running. Holding left mouse, alt-tabing, releasing left mouse then alt-tabing back to the game solves the problem.
Also, I think my mouse is drifting after quitting the game.
As the mod to put Japanese voices is just a matter of copy-pasting files, it’s works perfectly on Linux.
Unplayable for now

Proton-5.9-GE-5-ST GloriousEggroll
Got sound working by installing "xact" by using winetricks and setting xaudio2_7 as a native DLL. Some few cracks and pops can be heard sometimes.
The game doesn't seem to work directly with the dualshock 4. When forcing steam input in the game setting, the DS4 works, but inputs gets frozen after a random amout of time. Got it to work flawlessly by using sc-controller.
The game video is frozen unless the mouse left click is pressed. The trick is to press the left button and press alt+tab at the same time, then just restore the game and it will play normally until you re-press left click (which will make the game frozen again)

game doesn't run unless you have the mouse button held and the audio is completely broken
tried using both proton 5.0-9 and 5.9-GE.

Proton-4.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
winetricks xact devenum quartz
After running xact, and using WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" on launch options, audio works properly

the game will tell you to choose your country then will crash you just need to relaunch the game and it will work fine
proton 4.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll

Games does not start

Game does not start, regardless of Proton settings.

Will not even install.

Start with the "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command" startup option. The sound works, but no display
