Crashes after 10 mins
Crashes without fail the session/GPU (not sure what exactly, computer seizes up until both is restarted by some deamon) after 10 minutes of runtime.
You don't need any wrappers. This is a ScummVM game, so you can run it with the native Linux ScummVM installation.
- Install the native ScummVM on your distro (For instance "sudo apt install scummvm")
- Run ScummVM
- Click "Add Game" and point it to your Steam library: [...]/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Beneath a Steel Sky/SKY
- Click OK and enjoy your game.
Apart from some weird LoD loading it works perfectly, much better than the native Linux version.
the native Linux version sometimes crashes when tabbing back into fullscreen, stutters when loading new areas or turning around, has performance problems especially on highest graphic settings and suffers from the same LoD loading issues as the proton version.
protontricks 308060 --gui --force
- Specifically select a proton version in the game properties (Newest one) so it does not run the native version, which does not work
- Run the protontricks command specified and choose the option 'Select the default wineprefix', then 'Install a Windows DLL or component'. Tick 'vcrun2019' and press Ok and follow the installation instructions
- The options menu for Protontricks will show up again, this time select 'Run winecfg' and in the window that opens select "Windows 10" ans then "OK".
- Exit out of the options menu.
I set "MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2008 %command% +set r_ignorehwgamma 1" as startup options. All the problems from 1 year ago are gone. The last problem was the darkness of the game, but with the "r_ignorehwgamma" setting this is also fixed. High resolution can be set in the game config itself (google it). That the GUI is distorted on newer resolutions is normal since this game is built for 4:3 aspect ratios. I think it does not degrade the gaming experience at all.
Unsurprisingly it has the same problems as the main game. It starts with "MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2008 DRI_PRIME=1 %command%" start commands, but has multiple problems running. In fullscreen mode it is too dark and the brightness cannot be setup, the main menu has screwed rendering in fullscreen mode, and vsync results in stuttered rendering of the game. All this can be avoided by playing in windowed mode, deactivating vsync and using this console command (console has to be activated in settings first): "/com_maxfps 60". this can also be a very helpful command: "/cg_drawfps 1"

Videos are just black. probably some codec missing? DirectX 9 mode is as inefficient as it ever was.
Non-storyline NPC dialog is missing
Some slight graphical issues like flickering, broken shadows
Need to install "mesa-git", otherwise everything is black.
it used to work fine on 5.13.6, but not anymore
it used to work fine on 5.13.6, but somehow i cannot run the game anymore on any proton version, including GE versions. Even re-installing my whole system did not help.
ok, after deleting and reinstalling the game completely everything works as before. i checked file integrity at least 5 times, usually showed everything ok, and still the files where broken.
needs Proton 5.13.7
Does not work anymore on any Proton version (Including GE) since Patch 1.23
Since 1.62 Crashes on loading level with every proton version i tried.
crashes around 75% shader generation, sometimes takes the whole OS with it.
Stutters all the time, sometimes freezes up to 2 seconds, Anisotropic Filtering does not work, shadows are jagged and disappear depending on the distance, cars look like the float on the street because of that.
Only runs with Proton 4.11-13.
set "%command% -h 1440 -w 2560" (adapt it to your native screen resolution), otherwise screen will be black or unusable.
i think most pf the problems here have nothing to do with running it on Linux, it is just the game itself.
glowing objects, texture artifacts, various glitches
Performance is all over the place, frametimes are okay-ish
crashes in the first plaza until i switched to DX11
Only runs on Proton 3.16-9
The occasional stutter and when tabbing out and back in it looks like it crashed for 10 seconds, but it recovers.
"protontricks 560430 --gui --force". install "vcrun6" and "vcrun6sp6". in winecfg add "msvcrt" to the overrides in library tab.
No music. Window is not resizable (game stays in same resolution), apparently no fullscreen mode.
Again a native Linux game that runs worse than the Windows version.
The Linux versions opens on the wrong monitor without any way to fix it.
The Proton version runs without problems.
with Proton-GE it is playable.
Native version stutters to the point where it is unplayable
Another game where the native version does not work, but the proton version does. In the future i will start all games with Proton, no matter if they have a native version.
Textures are low resolution, setting them to anything higher than "medium" actually uses "low" setting.
low resolution tectures on billboards/graffity
Only high framerate and fluid on overall "low" settings. Setting "custom" and everything on "low" still has a low framerate, the game seems to set additional stuff on overall "low".
Works fine on Proton 7.0.6, needed a couple of restarts until some eula agreement or something (didnt read it) was confirmed.
Has the same problems as presumably all "id Tech 3" based games, after start the menu is weird, going on a server fixes this, then it works everywhere. Brightness is not changable, but since Quake 3 is not as dark as other games like CoD it is definitely playable. Multiplayer works flawlessly.
Works only with Proton Experimental at the moment.
wrong colors, regular pixel patterns on certain shaders, windows look like a disco light
Proton-6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
With two monitors: Only Windowed works, other modes make the game behave weirdly/inaccessible. With one monitor: Fullscreen works until you tab out, then the game fails to capture the keyboard again, Windowed Borderless works fine.
The game looks FANTASTIC.
works, with problems
No FPS capping, game runs in 800 FPS
run "protontricks 257420 d3dcompiler_47" and add the launch options "+gfxapi VLK", otherwise it crashes on launch
it is theoretically possible to play the game, but you would need to click thousands of times.
Intro is either completely black or flipped vertically
only < 5% of all mouse inputs (clicks) are registered
Shows menu backgrounds, but no text or 3D appears, no matter what Proton version i tried.
old save is lost
Crashes the whole PC without fail after 5 mins the latest, GE build made it only crash the user interface/GPU, not the whole PC
Proton-6.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
does not use steam cloud, saves are lost on reinstall
Mouse acceleration is weird and random, can be fixed by creating a file named "allegro.cfg" in the games main directory and adding the following two lines into it:
[mouse]
mouse_accel_factor=0"
Only works with Proton 4.11-13 but none of the newer version.
