Game has issues on my underpowered device, but Linux is mostly as good as Windows
Cutscenes are laggier than on Windows
Some issues occur with both Windows and Linux on my system: FPS drops, random crashes in Somnium stages
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Minor issue where the window turns tiny when you switch workspace in a tiling WM, it changes to full size when the window receives focus again though. Many Windows games crash completely when they lose focus on a tiling WM so this game works relatively well in comparison.
Much laggier than Windows on my weak laptop; WineD3D is a bit better but Windows is still preferable
D9VK works but is really slow for some reason, like 15-20 FPS. WineD3D gives a solid 60 FPS.

Make sure to delete the old files. The replacement files have the wrong capitalization, so unless your filesystem is case-insensitive, you might end up with both files at the same time and maybe break things.
Tested on Windows and Linux: this game has many technical flaws, but they mostly happen on both systems
6.9-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Does not launch without Glorious Eggroll (I used Proton 6.9-GE-2)
Video cutscenes have a green border at the bottom
Video cutscenes are really slow and use 100% CPU power; overall game is a tiny bit laggier than on Windows
Game sometimes crashed during certain moments in class trials
Glitch that happens on both Windows and Linux: keyboard & mouse input doesn't work half the time as is very frustrating.
Glitch that happens only on Windows?: on Windows, sometimes the game got stuck when I tried to save, and it refused to load some of my save files. I lost a few hours of progress. But Linux loads every save file just fine, have no issues with this at all.
To get around GFWL, I recommend the open-source Ultimate ASI Loader: https://github.com/ThirteenAG/Ultimate-ASI-Loader/releases
Download the 32-bit version, extract the .dll into the install folder and rename it to xlive.dll
At high settings, I get around 10 FPS, at low settings ~20 FPS. On Windows, it's around 30 FPS on high.
The game crashed at the end of a race one time. This happened on the very first race, and then never again in my hours of gameplay on Proton.
I use Sway, a tiling window manager for Wayland, and surprisingly, the Fullscreen mode in this is handled perfectly fine. Most games crash when you switch to a different desktop, but not this one.
Enabled virtual desktop.
With Wayland/sway, the game freezes as soon as I switched to another workspace. Enabling the virtual desktop fixes this. This is was not an issue with XFCE.
With Wayland/sway, the mouse input will sometimes get "bounded", so I can't rotate the camera too much. A single mouse click fixes this.
Make sure to keep the frame limiter on, otherwise you get physics glitches (known bug that affects Windows as well).
I had to enable Virtual Desktop before installing the game or Rockstar Games Launcher installer did not respond to input. Might just be a problem with the Sway window manager, though.
I wrote a guide on how to force Steam to re-run installation scripts here. Had to use protontricks regedit.
10-15 FPS, as low as 2-5 FPS during the first cutscene. I know I have modest hardware but I expected a game from 2008 to be at least playable. Tried WINE_D3D but that was even worse.
Installs and runs perfectly fine out of the box with Proton 6.3-5
When using Sway (a Wayland tiling window manager) and switching workspaces, the game exits fullscreen and turns into a small window. But that's easily fixed by making the game fullscreen through the window manager itself.
Worked fine out-of-the-box but was a bit slow on my weaker laptop, so I've personally tweaked stuff
Used Gallium Nine to maximize performance on my older laptop: installed Wine Nine Standalone and then did protontricks -c 'wine ninewinecfg
. This requires an older version of Proton.
Could not set the game to my monitor's resolution (1366x768) even though that was available on Windows.
Good as long as you stay in offline mode.
Performance was poor on my low-end hardware; had a much better time on Windows.
Had lots of issues with online features: constant "disconnected" messages, FOB missions not giving rewards, poor stability.
WineD3D removes stuttering, making the game perfect
Desyncs due to graphics stuttering in DXVK
The game stutters a little: more so in the menus but also during gameplay.
For some reason, the game defaulted to 1080p resolution, even though my laptop is only 1366x768. But this happened on Windows as well.
Works fine for the most part, finished Extra and now moving on to Unlimited
As mentioned by some other users of tiling window managers, this game's fullscreen mode generally acts a bit weird (using the Hyprland window manager), displaying in the wrong resolution. But the game fixes itself after changing it to "Windowed" mode in settings, and then turning fullscreen for the window on and off a few times.
Installation instructions for the Director's Cut patch on Linux:
- Download the patch from archive.org
- Install protontricks
- Open a command-line shell
- Run
protontricks-launch --appid 802880 MuvLuv_DirectorsCut.exe
Proton 5.0 and D9VK make a huge difference. Performance was drastically improved and it's just as good as native now.
On SwayWM, I had to enable virtual desktop due to fullscreen issues.
WineD3D works as well as Windows
Minor graphics stuttering. I suppose it adds to the creepy vibes of this game.
Standard DXVK just does not run very well on my system. Might need to do some debugging as it affects every other game, too, but still...
Game crashes very often, probably because my hardware doesn't meet Recommended requirements. (though Windows has no problems)
First, I followed the instructions given by Plush_Lama in a report below me.
You have to do them in that exact order, otherwise you might have errors during installation and missing sound during cutscenes.
Then I had to set the launch command to PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%
to fix audio crackling.
The game crashes VERY often during anime cutscenes. Most cutscenes are unskippable which means I'm unable to progress in the game.
Here are some steps to mitigate it:
At first I thought that this was due to lag on my weak machine. I went into the settings (had to immediately skip the intro cutscene by spamming ESC as the game starts) and set cutscene quality to Low. This made the crashes a lot less frequent but still frequent enough that I couldn't progress.
Then I decided to move the game from an NTFS partition to ext4. This helped a tiny bit, but did not solve the problem.
Try those steps if the game crashes and/or freezes during cutscenes, though in my case neither of them fixed the problem completely.
On Windows, the game works perfectly fine even when the 1080p cutscenes are laggy.
I use Sway, a tiling window manager written for Wayland. As with other games, it doesn't work well with fullscreen games - had to enable Borderless windowed mode in game settings. Most players shouldn't have problems with this.
Працює з українізатором (від UFDUB) і модами для ресторації фіч Dreamcast. Начебто необов'язково змінювати опції запуску, достатньо при інсталяції модів в Mod Manager вказати Renderer Backend: DirectX 9.
Не працюють деякі відео-катсцени, хоча інтро працює. Можливо знадобиться Proton Experimental.
There is some stuttering. It de-syncs the audio, which makes the rhythm game unplayable. This can be fixed by restarting the level, but it's still very annoying.
I have an issue with my system where Proton 6.x just refuses to launch any 32-bit games. Had to switch to the older Proton 5.x, not sure why.
Just like with other reports which used Proton 5.x, the config menu does not work, but you can launch AppLauncher.exe
separately using regular Wine. You can then run the game from Steam normally.
Some weird translucent triangle on screen at all times
Save file got corrupted and I abandoned this game entirely
Game was much laggier than on Windows so I just played on that system for a while
Initially completely froze when pressing any button on the title screen, don't remember what I did to get past that
Broken/black screen out-of-the-box, however the native Java trick from earlier reports works wonderfully
java -jar tametsi.exe # %command%
Everything's mostly fine. Music works for me, unlike for some Steam Deck users apparently
In a tiling window manager (Sway), the game window becomes tiny if it loses focus (e.g. I switch to another workspace). This is easily fixed by switching the game's window to fullscreen mode. Sway has this issue with a lot of games, and this might not be a problem for typical desktop environments.
Intro movies don't play.
I have gst-plugins-libav
installed, which should handle the music.
The game sometimes gets major lag spikes, but in my testing this also happens on Windows, so not a Linux issue.
Runs and plays great
No sound in arcades, as other people pointed out, and no SEGA startup sound.
When using SwayWM, the fullscreen game would crash when I moved to another workspace. Luckily, there's an option for borderless windowed.
When I tried this game a few months ago, I was getting the "Failed to initialize GS settings" error, but it looks like that's been resolved now.
