Borked by the recent "Quality of Life" update
bash -c 'exec "${@/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe/Build\/Final\/BioshockHD.exe}"' -- %command% -nointro
2K added a launcher which does nothing but add a store link, and now the game won't even launch. GamingOnLinux posted workarounds that seem to work for some people but no luck for me.
Nothing but a black screen on startup
Launching using Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF and mf-install, game displays a title splash screen for about 30 seconds, then changes to a silent black screen, which only goes away if the process is killed. Attempted to use the "no videos" fixes shown in other reports, after which the game gives a crash message on startup.
Crashes are rare but happen. Game locked up once while exiting, and again between rounds.
Works perfectly out of the box.
Game entered early access a couple of days ago as of this writing. Have only played the base (free) game - have not attempted to buy or play any of the expansions. No issues at all playing either AI or online multi-player.
Runs out of the box with Proton.
Game has native Linux support but in my experience it crashes constantly. Forcing the Windows edition with Proton appears to be much more stable and works "out of the box."
Doesn't launch
Tried running with multiple versions of Proton, including Experimental and GE - game does not launch.
So far have only been playing in "story mode" but it has been working pretty much flawlessly so far.
Game crashes when attempting to connect to online PvP
When the game works, I noticed the game's reaction time significantly slowed after several rounds, to the point where during a recent PvP session it was to the point it was completely not registering that I was clicking the mouse - something made even more frustrating considering turns are timed.
Game crashes on startup so often I'm probably going to give up on continuing to try to play it. Every time I hit the "play" button in Steam it's like a roll of the dice whether it will start or not. Occasionally it seems to start with no issues. More often, I either get a black screen for a minute which then goes away, or all I get is the hard drive spinning for a minute with nothing showing on the screen at all.
Although I consistently have trouble with this game crashing, it does appear to work flawlessly for most people. I have an older PC so it may simply be a hardware issue.
Doesn't Launch
Game doesn't launch at all in Native mode. When forcing Proton, it attempts to launch but immediately pops up an error stating "DX11 feature level 10.0 is required to run the engine." I do have a pretty old video card which may be the source of the problem.
If you crash your vehicle during the race, the whole game crashes with a "fatal error."
Mostly works great out of the box, though I did have to drop most video options due to my hardware. Unable to test online pay as there was no players online.
Eliminated the previously mentioned crash issue by using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% - however in exchange there is now "stuttering," especially early into races.
6.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Sometimes game does not detect my controller unless I go into the options menu and review the controller settings. Once on the controller settings screen the controller instantly starts working.
Nothing happens when running
Under both "standard" Proton and GE, Steam says game is running but nothing happens.
Works perfectly after install
I am running an .exe install downloaded from GOG. Game was initially installed using Wine, and is now running from Steam launcher using standard Proton with no issues.
Although gamepads are supported mine was not found by the game
Obtained from GOG, where only the Windows edition is available. Installed using Wine and then ran using standard Proton.
Borked as of last update
Used to work out of the box, as of the most recent update it now won't even launch, just gives some obscure error window for a few seconds and the closes.
Correction to previous report: Works out of the box
Previous report indicating game is borked was filed in error - turned out to be a system issue that coincidentally occurred about the same time as the game update. Game appears to work perfectly out of the box, however have not tried multiplayer yet.
Note that for some reason the developer has left the native Linux version online, however online play has been disabled in that version for a while; if you want online play you must force the Windows version. I also had to force Proton 4.11-13 as newer versions were giving me issues.
Immediate crash on startup
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
Probably a video driver issue. When using the default X.org drivers the game launched but ran so slow it was unplayable. Switched to proprietary Nvidiia drivers, game now throws an error message on startup.
