No problems
It just works; I didn't encounter any problems so far!

Go to winitricks gui, remove all applications for the default prefix created by heroic. Then install vcrun22 through the same gui and voila, the game should now run smoothly. Remember to launch in desktop mode the first time to link your epic games account.
Toned down the graphics settings, disabled motion blur
Works perfectly fine with no tweaks

HDR does not work on OLED steam deck. When you enable it in the options menu the rendering seemingly freezes but the game is still running and outputting audio. This is confirmed via the sound the menu makes when highlighting different options. You can blindly turn off HDR assuming you didn't stray from the option too much and all will work normally again.

Install vcrun2019 before launching the game
Alt-tabbing does not escape standard fullscreen mode, unless you alt-tab again to another non-RedOut window. Use a minimize shortcut as a workaround.

installed vcrun2019
Redout is just hard on its own, but proton has nothing to do with that.
4K Medium Details with 60 FPS. Little FPS drops but playable.
Unfortunately must launch with older Proton 6.3-8 then plays with zero problems. Newest 7.03 brings up a black screen.
Tossed boost and powerup on R4/L4
The verified proton version can't launch the game. 7.0-2 runs it fine, no further tinkering required. Hopefully they'll change the verified version to account for this.
Doesn't start up at all.
OOTB it simply stops running after a few seconds.
Followed steps by Jerb. Works fine now.

Now asks for VC++ runtime.
Install vcrun2019.
Following the 1.7 update, the game no longer functions out of the box. vcrun2019 needs to be installed in Protontricks, which changes the emulated Windows version to 7 as well. Change the setting back to win10 or the DX12 renderer will be nonfunctional.
Good news is, based on my (very) limited testing, the new DX12 renderer is more performant than the game's old DX11 renderer.
Install vcrun2019.
All settings set to off, except for textures, which is set to medium.
Some of the HUD is small.
This is a downside with the Verified program- it doesn't account for game updates.
Following the 1.7 update, the game no longer functions out of the box. vcrun2019 needs to be installed in Protontricks, which changes the emulated Windows version to 7 as well.
Protontricks needs to be installed via Discover, then Redout needs to be selected. Install vcrun2019, then change the setting back to win10.
Good news is, based on my (very) limited testing, the new DX12 renderer is more performance (and therefore, better on battery life) than the game's old DX11 renderer.
Switched to vredition beta branch
Recent update 1.7.0 broke Proton support (MS VC++ Runtime Error).
To make it work without installing MS C++ Runtime, you can switch to the old version before the update:
Steam Game Properties -> BETAS -> Enter beta acces code:
redoutvredition
Then install vredition - Redout Virtual Reality Edition
I used the Steam recommended proton 6.3.8 version. Game works flawless as before the update also on Steamdeck with EPIC Settings.
Only downside may be, that online MP only might work with ppl on the same (older) version !!
This game was **unplayable** until I configured many things, but afterwards, it plays great. 🙂
Had to install Microsoft Visual C++ in order to get the game to run without errors.
I experimented with setting the left trackpad to the left joystick. I found this to be a bit uncomfortable. More experimentation is needed.
I enabled the per-game profile for REDOUT: ENHANCED EDITION and then enabled Half Rate Shading to improve framerate.
The primary UI text is fairly easy to read, but there are many secondary UI elements like, ship statistics that are difficult to read.
For some reason, the game defaulted all of the graphics options to Epic, which resulted in the game being completely laggy and near unplayable.
The solution was to set all graphics options to Medium and ensure that Half Rate Shading is enabled in the battery performance options.
Initially, I installed the Epic Games Store version of this game via Heroic Games Launcher. Launching the game that way resulted in an error:
The following component(s) are required to run this program: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime.
I uninstalled the game, purchased the game on Steam, then installed the game via Steam. Unfortunately, I continued receiving this same exact error.
The solution to this error was for me to
- Launch the game at least 1 time to receive the above error.
- Download the latest VC_redist_x64 exe (2015-2022) from Microsoft.
- Rename it to
Redout.exe
. - Place it in the same directory as the original
redout.exe
(careful not to overwrite the existing redout.exe by renaming it to a temporary filename i.e.red.exe
). - Launch the game to fool Steam into installing MS VC++.
- Then, after installing MS VC++, I renamed
red.exe
back to redout.exe, and then launched the game.
This caused the game to launch without any errors.
After all of that, the game runs great and there are no further issues. 👍 I have no idea why I had such bad luck with this game.
It was working perfectly until the recent update 1.7.0, then the game begin to ask for Visual C++ Runtime.
Works right out of the box, no tinkering needed. Install and play. Performance is also good if you use medium settings.
Great out of the box experience. Cannot confirm multiplayer
Crashes after splash screen. Tried all versions of Proton.
250 hours in, the game works flawlessly with any version of Proton!
Currently I couldn't set up experimental FSR on Proton-GE, the game's resolution goes messed up, otherwise it's flawless!
I could see the "press any key" screen, but if i do so, the game crashes
Works perfectly
Game runs with Windows level performance.

game does not open
the games seems to install fine but doesnt open
The game runs essentially perfectly, other than the occasional freeze at the end of matches. Works fine.
On occasion, the game will freeze up. This isn't a particularly common occurrence, and could be an issue on my end.
Game runs smoothly out of box, Had issues with controller occasionally and would also occasionally freeze
Occasional Freezes
Game works out of the box, VR works nearly flawlessly, overall good experience.
Minor artifacting when playing the game in SteamVR. Otherwise basically perfect, as far as I can tell.
Game had some issues with stutter, nothing too horrible.
Not really an audio problem, but when the game stutters to load the world, the audio continues as normal. This means the race start count down timer can sound before the actual countdown begins. But all the sfx get re-synced as soon as the world figures itself out.
The camera can cull out bits of the world that it should not cull if it gets too close to a bit of the environment. (Eg: a tight turn around a corner.) This can even cull out bits of the track itself, but I did not find it not detrimental since it usually resolves itself after finishing the turn.
First time loading a track had a massive stutter at the beginning, but it recovered and did not impact gameplay. (The audio does start the count down, but the actual countdown happens when the world catches up.)

Some performance issues, but works very well overall
I had to tune down the graphics settings to keep the framerate high
I noticed some stuttering in the tutorial, right when the tutorial cards appear in the screen, and also in the beginning of the race of some of the later tracks (maybe some elements were still loading?)
Performance with Proton is not perfected enough to run this game at a decent framerate, even far above recommended specs.
Game would start out fine. After each loading screen the performance would take a massive hit. Lower settings. Performance hit again. Lower settings. Performance hit again. Restart.
VR modes were not tested. Oculus support on Linux is pretty garbage at the moment so don't expect to play this game in VR anyway.
Community forks did not help the performance of this game.
It runs absolutely flawless and with fine performance too.
No VR modes tested.

Crashes on start
Can't play with Proton GE 5.8 nor most recent (5.13) Proton.

Immediately crashes after clicking play
It looks like there's some missing directory issue at '.../Steam/steamapps/compatdata/517710/pfx//drive_c/windows/syswow64/' according to Steam's terminal output.
I'm getting slightly less FPS than I do in windows, but I still get around 100+ FPS.
Performs close, but not quite as well as in Windows.
Eliminated the previously mentioned crash issue by using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% - however in exchange there is now "stuttering," especially early into races.
