Works great on the Steam Deck, benefits from the right trackpad, & only a minor inconvenience navigating the UI.
Certain UI elements can only be clicked by moving the game's built in crosshair using either the right analog stick or right trackpad on top of the buttons, followed by clicking R2 to cause a left-click to occur.
Using the left Dpad or Left trackpad to navigate the UI is impossible, and X button does nothing in the UI.
The game is fairly straight forward and seems to be completely playable with no issues. I recomend playing this game with the right trackpad for easier and more accurate aiming since you're using a movable crosshair.
Game runs great out of box on medium settings with 2x AA. No major issues at a nearly solid, constant 60fps.
The text is a little bit too small for comfort.
Game couldn't sign in to RaceNet on initial game launch. Not sure if this is a Steam Deck problem. It doesn't appear to be a problem even after restarting the game several times. No progress is lost. My guess is, this probably just means I won't be able to play online races against other players.
I turned up the Anisotropic filtering to get rid of blurry road/dirt textures.
Game thinks I've completed a trial and asks me to **re-purchase** the full game, even though I already own the full game on Steam.
Unable to begin playing the game. The only in-game options are "Buy Now!" and "Quit Game". I'm definitely not re-purchasing the game just so that I can continue to receive this in-game message.
After changing resolution to 1280x800 and manually configuring controller layout, this game is playable.
Changed DPAD to use arrow keys instead of WASD.
Before the game would launch, it presented me with a window for choosing my graphical options. I had to change the resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x800 to match the Steam Deck.
Game is essentially unplayable until you manually change your controller layout to Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse and then manually edit it to be arrow keys instead of WASD.
The isometric view of this game makes it difficult to use the left analog stick if you configure it to use arrow keys. Therefore, I recommend sticking to DPAD for movement.
This game was **unplayable** until I configured many things, but afterwards, it plays great. ๐
Had to install Microsoft Visual C++ in order to get the game to run without errors.
I experimented with setting the left trackpad to the left joystick. I found this to be a bit uncomfortable. More experimentation is needed.
I enabled the per-game profile for REDOUT: ENHANCED EDITION and then enabled Half Rate Shading to improve framerate.
The primary UI text is fairly easy to read, but there are many secondary UI elements like, ship statistics that are difficult to read.
For some reason, the game defaulted all of the graphics options to Epic, which resulted in the game being completely laggy and near unplayable.
The solution was to set all graphics options to Medium and ensure that Half Rate Shading is enabled in the battery performance options.
Initially, I installed the Epic Games Store version of this game via Heroic Games Launcher. Launching the game that way resulted in an error:
The following component(s) are required to run this program: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime.
I uninstalled the game, purchased the game on Steam, then installed the game via Steam. Unfortunately, I continued receiving this same exact error.
The solution to this error was for me to
- Launch the game at least 1 time to receive the above error.
- Download the latest VC_redist_x64 exe (2015-2022) from Microsoft.
- Rename it to
Redout.exe
. - Place it in the same directory as the original
redout.exe
(careful not to overwrite the existing redout.exe by renaming it to a temporary filename i.e.red.exe
). - Launch the game to fool Steam into installing MS VC++.
- Then, after installing MS VC++, I renamed
red.exe
back to redout.exe, and then launched the game.
This caused the game to launch without any errors.
After all of that, the game runs great and there are no further issues. ๐ I have no idea why I had such bad luck with this game.
This game is definitely playable and you'll enjoy many hours of gameplay on the Steam Deck.
The text is mostly legible, but it should be a little bit bigger for comfort on the Steam Deck. Certain less important bits of text are even smaller and more difficult to read.
The framerate fluctuates between 50-60 fps, and sometimes stutters as new players join the match because their car customizations are loading in. I found that reducing the graphics even further, and enabling half-rate shading significantly improved performance, but there are still always minor stutters to consider during gameplay. Very rarely, there will be a stutter that might cause you to lose a point to the enemy, which is annoying.
My ping fluctates between 65-100, and at times, the ball does some weird things... that could just be an issue with WIFI in general, and not a Steam deck issue.... it's not a dealbreaker.... but I definitely noticed some oddities with fluctuating ping and it definitely should be mentioned, because it definitely has a negative impact on the gameplay.
Hopefully the performance issues are resolved over time.
If you're OK with 30fps and the fact that this game runs at all on a handheld gaming system, and absolute lowest graphics, then YES.
CryoUtilities - Swap File increase to 16GB
Would be nice if the text was just a little bit easier to read.
The game assets take a while to load even on absolute lowest settings. The interior of the ship uses the lowest poly models for up to 10+ seconds before loading the higher poly models. It takes a long time for textures to stop being blurry and assets just take a long time to reach higher poly LODs due to the extreme toll this game takes on the Steam Deck's 16GB of memory. This game really requires 32GB in my opinion, but as of writing this review, a 32GB model of the Steam Deck doesn't exist yet.
Sometimes the input feels a bit laggy, but that's because I'm capping the game at 30fps, and it's a miracle that this game runs at all because it maxes out the memory. So, occasional input lag occurs where my character doesn't jump exactly when I press the button, or he doesn't dodge or swing his lightsaber exactly when I press the button.
This game ran like crap prior to the latest Jedi Survivor Patch. Now, it only sometimes runs like crap. I installed CryoUtilities and increased the Swap file to 16GB. Now, the game runs a lot better, is a lot more stable, and I don't seem to be hard crashing as much.
When fast traveling to other areas, there's so much data being flushed out of ram and loaded into ram, that the game has a high probability of crashing the entire system. That's why I installed CryoUtilities and enabled the recommended changes which enables Swappiness and increases the Swap file to 16GB. After doing this, the game appears to be a lot more stable. Now, the game has managed to avoid crashing despite some severe hiccups in the framerate when loading different areas, traveling to different planets, or doing a 180 inside my ship.
This game is unplayable without any tinkering because the game will simply crash if you attempt to fast load to another area. The massive amount of data going in/out of the ram will inevitably cause the entire game or system to crash. CryoUtilities with Swappiness enabled and 16GB swap file is absolutely necessary for this game to run without stability issues.
Noticeable Performance Issues on Steam Deck, but still playable. Disappointing graphics options. Audio works perfectly WITHOUT tinkering.
60fps, 60hz, Scaling Filter: FSR, Sharpness: 3
Framerate dips below 60 quite frequently during high action scenes, but Steam framerate counter always incorrectly reports 60fps without any fluctuations at all, which is interesting because the game feels like it's going down to 35fps at times. Attempting to limit the refresh rate to 40hz or 30fps causes the game to run in slow motion, which makes the game unenjoyable.
Half Rate Shading doesn't work.
Running the game at 640x400 resolution with real time shadows disabled, with FSR enabled in the Steam's battery performance options makes the game run a little better, but the performance should honestly be rock solid at 800p on medium-ish graphics. Overall, I'm a little disappointed in the performance of the game and I'm disappointed the game doesn't let you configure View Distance, Level of Detail, or Particle Effects Quality because those settings would have the biggest impact on framerate. Nevertheless, it seems like a fun game and I look forward to playing more of it on the Steam Deck.
Main UI is mostly easy to read, except for tips and a few misc things.
When aiming a crossbow, the aim becomes extremely sensitive and impossible to hit enemies. I tried to reduce aiming sensitivity to lowest, but it wasn't enough. I haven't figured out a solution to this yet. I might try lowering the framerate, but I haven't tested this yet.
I have some save games on my Windows 10 installation that didn't carry over to the Steam Deck on initial launch of the game. So, I was forced to start over from the beginning of the game. Not sure why this happened.
Until I figure out how to aim without extreme sensitivity issues, I would consider this game unplayable on the Steam Deck.
Capped framerate to 30fps since the game likes to limit itself to that automatically.
The in-game tips show mouse and keyboard icons instead of controller button icons, otherwise, this game appears to run great at a capped 30fps.
This game is best played with a Mouse and Keyboard, not a gamepad. Therefore, I created a community layout with Mouse and Keyboard, but I had to create a button for activating Auto-fire (bound to L1). As a result, the player must activate Auto-fire in order to fire their first shot. A minor inconvenience, but I think this is the best controller layout I could create.
