Crashes immediately on launch after a window shows up. Tried various tweaks and recommendations on protondb, but none worked for me.
Won't start
Attempting the demo version before release, game simply won't even start, logging added shows for some reason it's starting and looking for steam.exe in /windows/system32 oddly, so some sort of declaration of working directories seems busted. Grounded, NMS, other proton games work fine.
Testing initially the Demo would not launch, but as of 2023-06-24, the Demo now works fine, plays normally, and was able to play through all available content with or without changes to proton versions. Glad they fixed this.
After not working prior, it seems to as of 3.16-6 at least testing now, but crashed within the first 2 minutes of play running through The Veil level on Ruin, so doesn't seem playable quite yet.
Running with no options, it crashes running through the initial snowfield, and continues to do so restoring upon any save there. Tried all disable options, nothing helps, and only speeds up crashing upon loading of the game. Pretty Borked for me.
Running with GE, it tries to start, but errors and crashes.
Going to look at logs, but I can only see on launch a windows-y looking error window pop for a second with a skull on it then crashes shut immediately using GE. Doesn't even launch with normal Proton, but that's fairly normal for me under Arch, but most any UE, Unity, or Godot games tend to work no problem with GE Proton for me, this is a rare exception.
Works launching from CLI, not Proton, but less than 1FPS
Per another recommendation that said it works from command-line start if not Proton, I tried this, and was surprised the game started. I got music, but the intro screen shot all my cpu's to 100%, and couldn't even move the cursor but once every 30 seconds. It launches at least outside Proton, but hardly playable.
Only played this minimally on a windoze laptop before, but installed this under proton today and played through the entire game perfectly with a F310 Logitech controller under Arch Linux. Superb!
Tried this as an old favorite of mine, but just too broken to play.
First tried at 4k resolution, native on my display(s), but simply made sound, and stuttrered through the intro until I killed the process.
Game launches at 1080p, but no intro FMV, or most of the intro. You eventually get to non pre-rendered scenes that work, but controllers don't seem to function either using a ps4 controller under linux that normally works ok. I can map keys in it, change buttons, but then they don't work in-game. It wasn't worth trying to play via keyboard.
I will experiment more with it, hopefully can be made to work, I love this game from on old days.
This worked from the onset of Proton, but very buggy and slow, but trying again with 3.16-6, it is very smooth in play, though appears very low res for playing on my 4k screen. My only qualm is I can't seem to get my steam controller to work with it so far. Going to try other controllers soon.
Game quality is great playing with 3.16 so far, at least when doing so with a keyboard. Attempting to use a Logitech game pad, a F310, I'd get a constant spin to the right of the character in game play, that cannot be fixed or even disabled. This seems to be a bug in the game however, as others have reported this for using game pads other than very specific ones (xbox360 apparently works).
Running this without any tweaks results in the playable ground being nothing but hot pink, which doesn't work for game play. Enabling all the tweaks makes the game render normally, and seems generally playable via keyboard now that the ground is viewable.
Attempting to use my logitech F310 controller, the menus began randomly going in different directions on their own, and forcing through that to gameplay results in the character running around wildly, so gamepad/joystick function seems broken.
No launch, nada.
Tried with no options using Proton Next 7.0.5, non-Next 7.0-5, 6.4-8, usually just hung in play with nothing or crashed immediately with Next. Will play with options when I have more time.
No tweaks needed, but after a while of play, often the mouse stops working in menus like the tablet view, and also switching to big picture to try to exit the screen to other displays on the desktop. The mouse is usually stuck on the display, and doesn't respond to any movement. If you tab out of tablet view, I can move, look, and generally play the game fine, so mouse still technically works. There is some bug between the mouse grab/lock on the window and the pointer overlay stopping working.
Clicking frantically and button mashing the keyboard tends to kick it into working, but then you get this odd drunken lag to the mouse, almost it over-commits in one direction, but any movement to correct results in greatly over-exaggerated swaying that is enough to make you sick watching too close (which I tend to do).
Only way to resolve this is to quit the game and restart. Always fun.
Game is generally playable at 20+ hours now, but noticed very high cpu utilization across all cores, which on my system is 20 cores, and 40 threads, all lit up to 80% during game play. Ouch, and my tower becomes a furnace...
Found after some query among steam forum that windoze runs fairly low cpu, so this wasn't normal, and began enabling tweaks, where just disabling esync removed the crazy cpu usage across all cores to almost non-existent levels. Winning!
I still can't get the game to run over 12fps in 4k, whether lowest or highest settings in graphics. Moving resolution to 1080p gets up to 15fps, but still rather noticeable to the eye. I get 60-100fps in most games even at 4k on this system, so something is still wrong here.
The mouse freeze issue still occurs, which is the most frustrating problem in use.
Attempted to run the experimental build, but got horrible delays from the initial menu and into game play, was basically unusable at 4k resolution and prior graphic settings (high). Reverting to main release works fine, or at least as fine as it's been working at 15fps without killing my system otherwise.
Initial play through the intro and first fights with the ghouls, it's very buggy for me.
The video at 4k is very choppy, seems to only run 15-30fps for any live rendering, even the videos are somewhat choppy. Need to try tweaking with settings still, but not very playable with such choppiness and low frame rates. I'll try knocking down to 1080p as well to see how playable that is. Sad, since the 4k shots even when jumpy are beautiful.
Also, the mouse controls are broken, very jumpy with my kensington trackball. It didn't do this in training, but during the first real fight after the intro sequences, my mouse would jump a good 60 degrees for every slight mouse movement, meaning a normal sweep of movement had me spinning like a ballerina in a very nauseating way trying to fight. All I could do was button mash and let the lock-on make hits, but normal movement in game is entirely broken. Reducing sensitivity didn't help much, not sure what to do about that, but some googling is required.
Basic with no effort, I get the initial launch page, no animation or anything, and pressing "press any key", game just hangs upon loading indefinitely with sound accelerating oddly at different intervals. Definitely borked.
I've attempted to run this in a number of ways, trying combinations of esync, d3d toggles, nothing gets past actual loading of either story mode, or battle arena. I tried disabling movies in options prior to starting either mode, and moving all setting to lowest for graphics, and still crashes when loading past either story or battle arena mode. I also tested all versions of available proton releases, on 3.16-6 boots the game up, all others crash upon start of the game immediately.
