Works out of the box
No problem here. I suck at this just as well in Linux as I did in Windows. My son is just as tired of hearing Mr Blue Sky as ever.
Gameplay runs like a dream on recommended setttings for my hardware
Minor Pauses in cutscenes, slight pauses / black screen on area transitions. Nothing to worry about.
Use DX11 - Don't let it switch to DX12 - minor in game setting for best Proton compatibility. I did not try DX12 but I read it causes issues.
Works as expected
No issues with minimising or alt-tab. Game works as expected. No performance issues. I got trashed by the first boss in Darkwood and decided to leave it there for a bit.
Works right out of the box
There was a time when you'd need to add a load of options and do some tinkering to get this to work. That time is past. I was able to log in and play in open mode and private mode just fine. I am using the Oddyssey expansion too.
Index controllers are a bit jittery in menus and in the inventory system.
Turn all performance stuff down to minimum to get playable frame rates
The game runs fine in GE 7.49 or later on my system. I was having trouble getting the script extender to work. I found a solution in this post
https://www.reddit.com/r/f4se/comments/nj7fwm/a_more_elegant_way_to_run_f4se_on_linux/
it is for F4SE but works for F4SEVR
Without doing this you will probably find (when using the script extender) that your saves have vanished and that starting a new game crashes the application.
Audio was very messed up. Odd Clicking, some ambient sounds. no music. This was fixed with GE Proton.
The game will not shut down normally. I have to end it from my steam library.
For me it NEEDED Custom Proton to be playable. With Custom Proton the only niggle is not shutting down cleanly. Definitely a safe buy, especially if you get it on sale
Runs beautifully. No tweaks needed.
Crashed once in about 3 hours of play. Better than Windows which crashed every 15 minutes or so.
The crashes are a known issue and since Runic is long gone they will never be fixed. Monitor selection works better than in windows and the game itself is more stable than in windows. In Linux I am getting more than 120fps reported ( though I only see 60 because of my monitor ) in Windows the reported FPS was about 75. Arguably linux performance for this game is better than in windows and the game is more stable in Linux than in windows. Bought on a Steam Sale for £3.74 BARGAIN for such a pretty and enjoyable game.
Game will create vulkan shaders but then doesn't launch. A brief "Preparing to Launch" then back to steam.
mangohud gamemoderun %command%
Have tried the above versions of Proton. No compatibility for my system.
For me it would NOT run in just Proton. GR 7-49 made it run perfectly. I would consider this safe to buy for specs similar to mine. My previous report was for a damaged Mint install ( dist-updgrade inconsistensies ). Never use sudo apt dist-ugrade.
Launcher is borked. Game runs by adding the Executable as a non steam game.
After installation the launcher would not load in any version of proton. I got a window but then I got an error message and the launcher was automatically closed.
I therefore did the following to add the game's exectuable as a non-Steam game by:
- clicking on "Add a Game" at the bottom of the library page.
- Choosing Add a non-Steam game and
- then browsing to the game's executable "KSP2_64.exe" .
- Having done this I chose to run the game using GE-Proton8-21.
After these steps were complete KSP2 ran as expected with no discernable difference to windows play. On my system I was getting 57-60fps with V-Sync on using a 60Hz 1080p Monitor.
Works perfectly out of the box
I am playing at a steady 90-120 fps on my system in Proton. I didn't have to tweak anything to get it to run. I am using the Vulkan option even though they say it's less stable I've not noticed anything odd so far. I have a 60hz monitor so I have locked the game to 60fps to save my GPU some work ( and electricity )
I use GE-Proton by default. I have the graphics settings set to High and I get 50+ FPS (60FPS (VSync) most of the time but it dips ) on my system. In Ultra I get 45 FPS+ but the game feels slower and looks like a slower framerate,. My processor use is ~50% across all 8 threads. I am using 17gb of 32gb ram on Kreet. I suspect the low FPS feel in Ultra settings is an engine feature as my system does not seem overly taxed.
VR Mode works as well
I put "no" to issues with controllers because this is the same in windows as Linux. You can't play Subnautica with motion tracking controllers. You need a gamepad. I am using a wireless controller (xbox360 clone ) from Amazon. If you have problems getting your controller to work and you have joystick/throttle plugged in then unplug that. For me it was trying to use my joystick for control. Basically the game just uses the first controller in the device list. This game is really pretty in VR. Catching fish early game is easier in vr as you can track them with your head. In the shallows, it's also very relaxing.
It Just Works
I have just played over an hour ( I think ) in Ultra settings, V-Sync on and a solid 60fps at all times. I have experienced no issues with gameplay or controls ( I am having trouble favouriting things but that's because I always redefine my controls ( left hander ) )
I currently have no mods of any kind installed.
Without experimental Skyrim VR worked for a few sessions and then stopped appearing in the VR headset. Only re-installation fixed this. Appears to be a vulkan shader issue. With experimental the shaders are translated on the fly ( so I am told ). The experimental version better mimics DX12's behaviour. On my hardware it's a little blurry - I can vastly improve this by using SteamVR settings to up the resolution but then, of course, I lose framerate. I am using a Valve Index VR headset.
It just worked
I was able to play, the epic launcher worked just fine. The framerate seemed perfectly acceptable.
The game would not run for me except on GE. Also It would not run on my secondary drive - only the primary drive with the OS on it.
Works perfectly Kubuntu 20.4
NEVER do sudo apt dist-upgrade. Just back up your stuff and reinstall. Install Proton Games to your primary OS drive. Proton does not other steam libraries.
Only the Vive wands were presented to me without the custom proton. A Vive player won't need tinkering. This is not a problem with the game but with proton.
Highly Configurable 3D VR Media Player.
Switch to latest beta. I initially had audio but no video on any media. I fixed this by changing the renderer from default to Direct Show ( Video Lan renderer gave me video but no audio for some reason )
