PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE recommended but not required.
Fullscreen mode in this game is just buggy. This is normal.
Manual configuration can fix this, but this requires forcing the game to generate a config. This is an issue on Windows as well.
Some minor stutter when loading environments.
No impact on playability.
Animations seem off, but nothing serious.
Tends to crash when entering game. Constant graphical glitches.
Causes my graphics drivers to reset and break, but that may be due to my configuration.
It's not good.
As others have stated, using "sed -i 's/legacykeyregistrylocation/legacykeyregistrylocation2/g' ~/.steam/steam/appcache/appinfo.vdf" before starting Steam is necessary to bypass the key issue. Also Wine D9vk and disabling Esync are essential to having a good gameplay experience in my tests, but your mileage may very. Once all the tweaks are applied, the game runs no worse than on Windows. 60FPS with only minor stuttering when loading in some assets are expected.
'sed' fix no longer works.
Sadly, as others have pointed out, resent versions of Steam have broken the fix for the key retrieval bug, rendering this game, once again, unplayable.
Hopefully someone will work out a new fix, and we'll be able to play it again. (Or Valve will patch Steam, and fix this bug permanently. But that seems unlikely.)
5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Use GloriousEggroll
Alt-tabing repeatedly caused the game to stop registering the escape key. This is strange, but not exactly game-breaking.
Runs a bit slower than expected, but more than playable. May be fixable with minor tweaks.
Animations seem slightly more janky than I remember, but that could just be me. Doesn't effect gameplay, just looks strange at times.
Some people seem to have gotten this working with the default Proton version. I was not able to do so in any meaningful way.
However, it starts just fine with GloriousEggroll. No special options were needed or tested (though they may improve the experience).
Low framerates, minor graphical problems. DON"T use wine D3D. It make everything worse. Well, the framerate was better, but everything else was worse (and blindingly bright).
Played until amdgpu driver crashed. (Unrelated) Some rather obtrusive stuttering at some times, otherwise runs incredibly well.
Native is hot garbage, and Proton doesn't work.
V-sync and antialiasing are broken in the native version, and no amount of tweaking got the game to start under Proton.
The native version can be made mostly-playable by using "vblank_mode=0 %command%", but it's frustrating that this is an issue.
Single player functioned well. Only a few, very minor, issues.
Audio skipped and acted strange, briefly, during the beginning of the game, but there were no other issues.
Very minor graphical glitches. Most notably the interior texture for the helicopters was missing during a cutscene.
Did not test multiplayer.
gamemoderun %command%
The edge scrolling boundry was a bit off at times.
Using the default Proton version resulted in horrendous hitching after just a few minutes.
GE ran almost perfectly.
Crashes to desktop immediately. No matter what.
Some people seem able to get this working.
It seems I'm not a lucky person.
No amount of tweaking settings, or changing files has had any effect on this game (and believe me I tried all of them).
Generally, everything works well.
Some random oddness, especially after the game caused cinammon to crash.
Tabbing out of the game can cause all maner of havoc. From having to re-maximize the game multiple times, to the game crashing/freezing, to the game causing cinnamon to crash.
At one point, a follower became stuck, and could not be interacted with, but was freed after preforming a sermon.
Begines to lag in the village, during later stages of the game, but is more than playable.
Just need to figure out what's going on with the windowing issues.
Desn't appear to start on some older systems. At least not in my configuration.
Runs flawlessly on a modern system. Achieved will over 100FPS at all times.
No amount of tweaking or updating has gotten me past an empty window that immediately crashes back to the desktop.
Disable esync, enable large address aware. Set everything to max, unfortunately the framerates are bad at times, no matter what the settings.
Antialiasing breaks texture rendering. So leave it off.
Benchmark, when set to fullscreen, opens, then minimizes. Upon maximizing the window there are visible artefacts for up to several seconds before the game runs normally.
Fails on all versions of Proton with any settings.
The game simply does not start.
Tried all available versions of Proton. All crashed immediately, regardless of specified launch options.
Errors logged showed complaints of missing DLLs (in some versions).
Wasn't worth further investigation to me. Feel free to try.
I didn't encounter any game-breaking issues out of the box. Your mileage may very.
Some stuttering when first loading assets.
Some minor random stutters during situations like combat.
I just started the game, and was able to play it as-is. Some proton settings may improve things, but none were tested in this run. It's possible the issues I experienced were due to some part of my setup, and could be resolved with tweaks or hardware changes.
Runs Well Out-of-the-Box. Crashed Rarely.
There were a couple moments where the graphics broke, but they were very brief.
Sometimes crashes once every few hours.
Just be sure to save often.
I was able to start a game and beat the entirety of Chapter 1 with no issues.
Avoid using special characters in your save names (, : ; ! ? etc...) the game will attempt to use them in the directory name and promptly have a panic attack. You will not be able to save or load your game, causing you to lose any progress. Stick to letters, numbers, and periods.
Just as broken as it is on Windows. Runs after patching the 3GB flag in the executable, then crashes after a game gets too complex. Just like Windows 7.
It's not Proton, this game is just broken.
5.11-GE-1-MF GloriousEggroll
Use the latest GloriousEggroll.
Allowing the window to be minimized in any way (eg. alt-tab) breaks the game.
Minor stuttering in some areas.
Stutters when autosaving.
Using the command suggested by others to fix stuttering causes Origin to minimize the game on startup, breaking it every time.
Using GloriousEggroll instead fixes the stuttering without changing any permissions (Thus keeping Origin from minimizing the game, and allowing it to be played).
I did run the game in gamemode, with ACO enabled.
I cannot confirm if this makes a significant difference.
Runs fairly well. Was able to enjoy a good bit of the game without issue.
I don't think most normal players would be happy about the mess I has to go through to get this game running.
5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
GloriousEggroll
Minor glitches in cutscenes.
Putting the game in fullscreen would cause it to break immediately.
Origin was so broken, I could not disable the overlay to fix this, or add launch options via the launcher.
Occasional stutters or slowdowns.
Origin was a nightmare.
I couldn't get it out of restricted mode, but eventually figured out that I could edit the launcher options manually using the installerdata.xml file located in the __Installer directory of the game folder.
Once I figured this out, I was able to manually replace the "<parameters />" field under "<runtime>" with "<parameters>-window -noborder</parameters>" and launch the game in borderless mode.
After this I had to use devilspie2 to fix some windowing issues, but I was finally able to play the game with only very minor issues.
There was far too much work involved, for no reason other than that Origin is broken AF.
Until Origin is more stable, I feel, any games that require it are going to be very hit-or-miss.
Runs pretty great out-of-box under Proton 4.11. Just not under 5.0. No real game breaking issues encountered. Would recommend trying it.
Fullscreen mode causes multiscreen and framerate issues.
Borderless mode fixes this.
Minor physics bugs.
May just be the game. Never played it on windows, so I can't say for sure.
Doesn't severely impact experience.
