-noEAC
On a few occassions the mouse would stop responding in game. Alt+Tabbing out and back in fixed the issue for me immediately though.
The game would crash for me during movies / cutscenes unless I launched the game with the -noEAC flag.
EAC for Linux isn't enabled for this title and so you must use the -noEAC flag to boot them game and you will be unable to play online multiplayer.
Works out of the box with Proton 6.X+
I don't think this has anything to do with Proton, but there are a lot of sound effects that are absolutely deafening and will play far louder than they should.
For whatever reason, when you Alt+Tab out of the game, it sets itself to an incredibly tiny windowed mode. You just need to Alt+Enter to make it full screen again though.
In some missions, framerate dropped considerably, though I'm not sure as to why.
The game works fine with Proton 5.0-9 except for the audio. I played for about 10 minutes to test things out and it ran well.
Audio doesn't play at all besides a constant white noise / static.
With the latest Proton 5.13 release that includes the Audio 0.20.09 patch that fixes the audio issue, the game works flawlessly.
This game is pretty buggy with some of the quests - though that has nothing to do with Proton itself and everything to do with the programming of the game as these issues are experienced on every version of the game - console and PC.
Some people have reported that "movies" don't work, but I have them disabled anyway in the launcher settings, so I have no idea if this is true or not. Either way, "movies" don't seem to be an integral part of the game as I haven't come across any sections of the game that seems to have them in my ~30 hours of playtime.
Runs straight out of the box with no real issues.
In-game voice chat doesn't seem to work, but that's not a huge issue for this game since gameplay is straightforward and it's easy to communicate without voice chat.
Works great out of the box with Proton.
As others have mentioned, there are a few error messages upon starting the game (just close them) and the game has a black screen for a while, but after that, everything works great.
As long as you're OK with playing singleplayer, this is a fun, charming game that runs well on Linux. Skip for now if wanting multiplayer.
dotnet40
After loading the initial level and getting over the shader compilation, the game ran smoothly enough given my hardware.
Unable to log into Xbox Live as of 2022-09-27. Like the previous reports, there is an invisible window, but now the YouTube video that is linked doesn't help because none of the buttons are clickable. Online / Multiplayer is effectively broken until this is resolved.
Runs splendidly. I only run it in Vulkan mode with one of the latest Proton GE variants, so I can't speak for DirectX capability.
Proton-5.21-GE-1
While running in Vulkan mode, the Steam overlay, achievement notifications, and chat messages seem to be graphically corrupted. Other than that, the game itself has no issue.
The native version doesn't work on modern distros. Force steam to install the Windows version and use Proton to run the game out of the box.
On rare occasions the audio will bug out and begin looping.
Works great after installing dotnet4. I didn't bother with the custom script others have mentioned.
Install dotnet4 to enable the game launcher.
Doesn't work with Proton versions 4.11-7 or 4.2-9. I haven't tried any tweaks. An initial loading box will pop up, but nothing happens after that.
Needed to patch (or download) a file to allow the game to run on an AMD processor.
The contrast, brightness /darkness for this game are absolutely awful and it was very hard to see anything in some of the darker parts of the game. Turning up the brightness didn't help much as it just washed everything out.
I've never played the game on Windows and so can't be sure if this is an OS problem or a game problem in general, but a lot of the voice acting audio has odd / random peaks in volume that can get very annoying.
Another report mentioned that Alt+Tab can cause the game to malfunction, but I experienced no such issue and Alt+Tab in this game quite frequently.
Does not work out of the box.
Attempted to launch with Proton 5.13-5, Proton-6.1-GE-1at first. Under Proton 5.13-5, the game launches a window and then immediate closes / crashes.
Under Proton-6.1-GE-1, the same window will appear, and immediately minimize. If given enough time, there will be some initial menu audio. Attempting to switch to the minimized game window, the window appears to open, but then immediately minimizes again. After switching several time back and forth, the window will sometimes maximize and display a completely black screen. At this point, the mouse cursor changes to the in-game cursor and you can hear menu sounds if clicking, or pressing direction buttons on a game pad.
Runs well with occasional crashes every one to two hours, but overall is a good experience.
As mentioned here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/4593 all that's needed for this game to run so far is creating the configuration file that contains "dxgi.deferSurfaceCreation = True"
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE is enabled by default on Proton versions 5.0-4 and above and doesn't need to be manually set. I can also confirm that the game runs without any need for setting PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 either.
As mentioned elsewhere, the game seems to routinely crash after an hour or two.
Works well when creating a config file containing, "dxgi.deferSurfaceCreation = True" and setting the launch option in Steam to point to the config file : 'DXVK_CONFIG_FILE="/path/to/config_file.conf" %command%'
Doesn't start / crashes immediately.
Still borked witht he latest 5.13.
The game runs, but it only runs as fullscreen and with a solid black background. This defeats the entire purpose of the game.
The background is completely black instead of transparent.
Even when launching the game with windowed options, the game runs at full screen.
Since this is an idler game that's suppossed to run over your other programs as you're doing other things, the fact that this game will only run in fullscreen mode and with a solid black background instead of the desired transparent background, I would say that this game is not acceptable as having to Alt+Tab back and forth to this game defeats the entire point and purpose of it.
Until transparency is fixed, this game is fundamentally broken in my opinion.
Crashes on Native Linux Version
Always crashes on launch on a splash screen for the game - shows an Unreal 4 crash handler and upon closing or submitting the crash report, the game closes.
When first loading into an area, the game will stutter a bit but will smooth out after a minute or so.
As mentioned by others, cutscenes do not play.
Works out of the box, might judder a bit here and there due to environment explosions and may crash when moving to new zones / levels.
The initial video before the main menu shows SMTPE color bars instead of whatever the video is (I assume intro credits / logos), but in-game cutscenes are fine since they're rendered in engine.
The game judders and hitches a bit when items in the environment explode, but I believe this is a bug with the game itself and several reviews I have read complain of this issue. I expect it will be patched eventually.
Crashed a few times when selecting new zones / areas to switch to.
Game Launches, Attempts to Load, and Crashes Before Getting to the Main Menu
sound=false
It seems like this is back to not working unless using the sound=false launch option. I attempted running this via several different versions of Proton which include 5.13-6, 6.3-8, 7.0-2, and pretty much every version of ProtonGE from 7-2 to 7-10 and none of them worked for me.
Game only works when using Proton 4.11.XX. I used 4.11.12 for my time playing. Though the configuration tool doesn't work with 4.11.XX from what I tested, and I had to set the game to use Proton 5.1-GE-1 to use the configuration tool, then switch back to 4.11.12 to actually play the game.
As others have mentioned, you will need to install K-Lite Basic (I used protontricks in GUI mode for this. I copied the file over to the prefix's steamuser desktop, then installed K-Lite from the "Select the default Wine prefix" | "Run explorer" option in protontricks.
And of course you'll need to add quartz.dll by way of "Select the default wine prefix" | "Install a Windows DLL or component" options.
Once all of that was done, the game ran quite well. I have yet to beat it, but I'm about 15 hours in with this setup and it's going well.
Works out of the box. Runs great. No issues for me.
As already mentioned, the only real issue is that the intro cinematic before the main menu is graphically corrupted, but the audio for it plays fine for me. Installing lav-filters as recommended by another user caused the game to crash on startup for me, so I uninstalled it. I have the scene set to skip from the game's configuration utility anyway, so it really isn't an issue.
Seems like things work well enough to be able to enjoy this game, newly loaded level lag / judder aside.
I didn't have any FPS counters displayed, but it seemed that the game was a bit sluggish. While beginning a level, there was definitely a lot of judder and choppiness. Things smoothed out after the first 30 seconds or so.
Titanfall 2 uses Fairfight anti-cheat and it has yet to be seen if playing via Proton will trigger this system. I've been unable to find any reports of Linux players being targeted by Fairfight, but I would say it remains a possibility.
Works well with GE-Proton7-31, even in Immortal Empires with no crashes, just less performance than on Windows.
As noted elsewhere, even on high-end hardware, this game is pretty laggy on the world maps. I often hit sub 30 FPS with an AMD 5800X and AMD 6900X.
Doesn't work due to AntiCheat.
Unlike some others have mentioned while giving this game a "working" score - this game is unplayable on the normal realm due to anticheat. The mod realm works, but you have absolutely ZERO progression while playing on it, so there's no point in playing on it if you want level and gear progression (which is a big part of the game)
