gamemode run %command% -windowed
Starting the game in windowed (see launch options) makes sure you get consistently passed the startup movie/logo. After the main menu loads you can safely change this to fullscreen or borderless. As stated above: use X11 or suffer choppy fps after about 30-60min of play.
X11: Runs buttery smooth - even better with Proton compared to native Linux. Wayland: After about 30-60min of play the game gets choppy.

gamescope -W 2560 -H 1440 -r 165 -f -- %command%
The game really doesn't like to stay in front. If a nother window is focused it's sent to the background
Beware that the saves are different between the native and proton versions
Sometimes I would get stuck on the splash screen and I couldn't figure out what causes it. Gamescope seems to be a solution
It technically works without tinkering but not consistently.
forced experimental because native build wasnt optimized that well, everything runs great with proton and lowest settings
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%

Since I use Hyprland borderless windowed is kinda required in order to be able to "tab out" of the game.
If you switch between native and proton they you'll have to start over.
It runs better with Proton than it does on native in my experice, much higher FPS and no slowdown.
Run perfectly out of the box !

Watch out for the save game incompatiability. Switch to Proton in order to download them from the steam cloud.
mangohud %command%
In Native mode (without Proton enabled), your saves that were created on Winblows will not download and the game will show that you have no saves. In order to fix this, you must use Proton in order for steam to recognise the files to download and pull them in.
Performance wise, I'm not sure if it's the new 7.50 update, but it is AMAZING in comparison to Winblows. Even when the map is open, it is a rock solid 120fps. My GPU is barely breaking a sweat as well, and this is on native with no upscaling. Could also be TAA, not sure.

-windowed
7.50 added intro and it seems it does not trigger in fullscreen. Gotta start windowed and then flip to fullscreen.

It's just not enjoyable given the terrible performance, even at the lowest possible settings. Looks horrible, runs horrible.
Having to change to native from default proton prevents cloud sync with windows PC
Game regularly drops to single digit fps anywhere but in empty space. Should not be verified.
Still crashes despite supposed fix.
This game has destroyed my faith in the verification system. People say it's not there for performance however there's a big green tick next to "This games default settings perform well on the steam deck." Go figure

-windowed
Game would not load without using launch option -windowed
Add -windowed to launch options if you can't get past the x4 loading screen. You'll know its not working because after 6sec the audio cuts out.

VKB Gladiator's and VKB T-Rudder's were either detected and unresponsive, or did not work with the Native linux install. Forcing GE-Proton9-22 Fixed this for me.
If you are having troubles with your controllers try forcing Proton compatability.

Fps drop to 35 - 40ish FPS when entering a space station. On the other hand, during the tutorial session, I am able to reach stable 120 fps
Unstable FPS

Native has terrible performance for me but this may due to some custom kernel flags I haven't debugged. Proton Experimental works great, 10-30fps gain from Windows

Works out of the box, native, awsome
Worth and Works
gamemoderun %command%

Game just worked out of the box on Native and on default Proton. I'm using KDE running on X11 not Wayland.
If you want to load you Windows saves you need to switch compatibility to Proton as only then my windows made save files were visible in-game.

Works perfect out of the box
The only thing you need to do (if you want to use proton) is set the game to use proton manually (I tested with proton 9). If you don't, you'll download the native linux version.
The native linux version works fine too, I just had a problem with my dual-joystick (2x T-1600M) setup which didn't occur in the proton version.

Works perfect out of the box
I have 2 Thrustmaster T-16000M Joysticks (for a HOSAS setup) but the native game version only ever accepted 1 of them. They work in the proton version.
I see the joystick-problem as a very specific problem that not too many people will have, so for the average user (keyboard, controller or just 1 joystick) the game works perfect.

Changes left trackpad behaviour
On big battles, slow downs (around 20FPS)
At the moment of writing this I played the game for around 60h. It plays nice. Not perfect and with some FPS downs to 20. But most time works around 30FPS.
The crashes of my previous report were fixed today in a Hotfix, right now there is no big problems with the game.
But, bear in mind, you MUST select the Linux version in the compatibility option in Steam, Default is Proton and the performance is not good there. Native version works fine.

Proton may not be neccesary, but the performance is too good to try without. Love the compatability with Linux. Thank you Egosoft!

Both trackpads with radial menus
Opening maps dips to 20fps, some huge dips to 5 fps, previous a crash that blocks the SD and you need to restart the device
In the Sandbox game, every two-three hours there is a crash while travelling through the map.
Playing with Foundations DLC and 7.0/7.10.
In Steam Deck, force compatibility to the native installation. FSR on performance and everything on low. That is playable, but crashes often. For me is kinda ok, but is far from be a pleasant experience. Still, is playable and I will continue doing so.
I finish Timelines DLC without much problem, but Sandbox Mode is more problematic for performance.

Works perfect! 👍
Fast, stable, no major bugs or problems so far. 100% recommendation!!
Works out of the box. Just install, play and have fun (if you are into the X-series^^).

Not shared between proton and native, can copy them over if needed. ~/.config/EgoSoft/X4/87689466/save/ ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/392160/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Egosoft/X4/87689466/save/
Runs well on proton too.

Alt+tabbing from borderless makes screen black, but graphics come back after a few seconds.
Alt+Tabbing makes graphics vanish temporarily. They return after a few seconds. Always pause before alt+tabbing.

Runs without any issues
Had no problems installing and playing. Worked like a charm. I had 44FPS ingame. Loading times were shorter (perceived) than under Win11.

- Disable Anti/Alias
- Graphic preset - Low
- Set Cockpit reflections to 0
Definitely not Steam Deck Verified

Small graphical concern when launching or fullscreen from windowed but only for a brief moment. Game ran rock solid even with stress applied.

Once upon a time I had a serious joystick problem, but then it was fixed.
It works natively quite well. No Proton.

It works fine exept for using multiple Joysticks. Proton Version runns Smoother than Native.
AMD_VULKAN_ICD=RADV XKB_DEFAULT_LAYOUT=de PIPEWIRE_LATENCY=1024/48000 /usr/bin/gamescope -f -W 3840 -H 2160 -- /usr/bin/mangohud %command%
Copied and Linked files betwen Native and Proton config and save files or folders
Using Pipewire cause problems with game using pipewire-jack to play and in combination with an audio device that can not handle low latency (Jack Requirement). Fixed by copy the file "/usr/share/openal/alsoftrc.sample" to "~/.config/alsoft.conf" and edit it to change "drivers = pulse" to set it to pulseaudio only.
Using Wayland can cause problems with Mouse. Fixed by using gamescope as workaround.
If two Joystick used it causes the dropdown menus unusable. Multiple inputs of mouse an Joystick cause it. Thread in Forum isn't solved jet.
Please. Note running under Wayland must be used with gamescope and running pipewire has to be configured. This is not the case if using X.org and Pulseaudio instead.

It just will not boot.
In spite meeting minimum system requirements, and having all the prerequisites, the game won't launch on native mode. Worse yet, no version of proton could launch it, it doesn't go about downloading the prerequisites for emulation. After banging my head against it for two days, I was forced to ask for a refund.

Pretty much all text is awful
Most controls are not native to the deck
